Critterbee❇ (critterbee) | 2786 comments This month we will have our first group read of Why Shoot a Butler?.

This is the NON-SPOILER thread, for first impressions and first-time readers.
Please either use the spoilers thread or use spoiler tags to discuss spoilers. We don't want to spoil a first read for anyone. This goes for other GH titles as well.

We have not yet discussed this book in a group read, so I am looking forward to reading about how everyone thinks and feels about the title. Again, please no spoilers in this thread!

I have never read this book, (so excited to have a fresh Heyer!) and will read it on my kindle.

Let's begin!

Barb in Maryland | 817 comments I first read this way back in the early 1970s, then again around 2010.
So it has been some time since I last read it, and it is among my least read of Heyer's books.
This is the edition I got from the library for this read.

sabagrey | 382 comments Having devoured the Regency/Georgian Era books, and part of the other hsitorical ones, I once thought I should have a look into GH mysteries. I started with this one ... and this is all. I never finished, nor do I remember much. I'll finish it this time, I promise.

QNPoohBear | 1640 comments Her mysteries are not as memorable as her Regencies. I don't recall a thing about this book and I read it in 2015. I'll have to read it again. Probably an e-book if I can get it. It's getting too hot to walk to the library and carry home a load of books.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ I'll be starting in a couple of days. I had a busy week last week & I'm a bit behind in my reading. :)

mark monday (majestic-plural) | 49 comments I think I may have put my now-deleted comment in the wrong thread (didn't contain spoilers but it did mention the ending, slightly) so have moved it. Sorry!

Susan in Perthshire (susanageofaquarius) | 1448 comments I read this (along with her other detective fiction, decades ago and can’t remember a thing!

That's ok, Mark! :)

Jackie | 1730 comments I first read the mysteries when I was in my teens and twenties and I didn't like them. Not sure when it changed, but after awhile I got to be fond of a couple of them, while my least favorites included Why Shoot a Butler.
But it's really grown on me over the decades. I just started my re-read, but will probably just post in the spoiler thread when I finish.

Jackie | 1730 comments I felt the same about Footsteps in the Dark and Duplicate Death, they were my least favorites but I've come to enjoy them.

Teresa | 2189 comments I'm hoping to start this weekend. I've never read it so looking forward to it. I'll be reading it on my kindle which has this cover,
Why Shoot a Butler? by Georgette Heyer

Jackie | 1730 comments I'm up to the (exciting!) ending and will finish today, very likely. in fact, I could only put the book down because I already know what happens! I will post in the spoiler thread when I'm ready.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ Just made a start last night. This is my edition;

Why Shoot a Butler? by Georgette Heyer

I'm surprised how much I am enjoying it this time since I really didn't care for it on my one & only previous read.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ Still enjoying other than (view spoiler) but I am now up to (view spoiler)

I was hoping to finish last night but just couldn't push through.

Jackie | 1730 comments LOL the car chase did go on, didn't it? but I thought (view spoiler).

Teresa | 2189 comments Agreed Jackie!

QNPoohBear | 1640 comments I found it slow and hard to get into at first. It's more hard boiled than some of her others. It picked up about halfway through and now I can't put it down! I'm reading the Sourcebooks version on Hoopla. The print was soooo tiny. I had to enlarge it.
