Ditto- I always listen to the beginning of a book on normal speed when driving a regular route (I listen while driving). Once I'm feeling the book, I speed it up.

I like the first part of that sentence - A book you've seen a film of. Or a book with a movie or TV series adaptation. (whether you've seen it yet or not) In the weekly topic discussion, people might choose to comment on the movies too.

"One you haven't" could be anything, so I would leave it off.

OMG- this happened to me totally randomly 2x this year and I was thinking it would be a good double prompt

First were these 2
Deacon King Kong by James McBride and The Chiffon Trenches by André Leon Talley

and then these

The Kingdoms by Natasha Pulley and The Lighthouse Witches by C.J. Cooke

It was spooky- esp as I'm a kindle reader who doesn't notice covers!

I do like the movie/tv prompts but like the "you've seen" part because one of the discussion questions can be "which was better?" which people love to discuss! But some people don't do tv or movies so could be limiting (there is always the option to replace a prompt if you don't like it so every prompt doesn't need to be for everyone)

I like this. Sometimes I read the book before I see the movie, and sometimes I see the movie (or TV show) before I read the book. So I've got a sizable list for both categories. Just word it so that it's limited to books that have been made into movies or TV shows. Like maybe A book made into a movie or show that you've seen, and a book made into a movie or show that you have not seen.

Apparently there’s a real trend for book titles containing people’s full names at the moment. Something to do with the success of Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine

It's true that cover prompts can have issues too if someone has reduced vision, or reads a lot of audiobooks or ebooks where the covers are small. Still I don't remember any blanket rejection of them.

I'm one of the people who has vision difficulties with covers, but I think we absolutely need some cover prompts - for variety, fun and flexibility. I might speak up if I think there is one that's too difficult, and I hope no takes it as personal criticism.

Or I might ask for examples of book titles. For the Monopoly cover I relied 100% on the lists of book suggestions that other "wilders" provided. Once I had two good ones, I was on board with it. Especially because it was clear that some people were really enjoying the search. I have fun with other types of prompts, and I think that may be true of a lot of us.

I love to see examples of titles, or a good link with all types of prompts. I think it helps all voters when the person suggesting a prompt provides some examples. I know that the Small Town examples swayed me last summer when voting.

message 364: by Thomas (new)

Thomas For clarification I’m not dissing cover prompts my issue was that another post seemed to imply that title and cover prompts are the ones that get picked when actually we have various suggestions that get in and if you look at categories there aren’t noticeablely more title or cover prompts

I think the prompt is confusing the way it is worded. I would say:

a book with a film adaptation that you have seen
a book with a film adaptation that you have not seen

There are usually a lot of suggested prompts related to covers and they tend to get voted in more easily and quickly than other types of prompts. In fact, last year the mods had to set a rule that we couldn't have any more cover prompts to keep the prompts balanced.

Yes! Voting today - re the time, I'm 7-odd hours ahead of the US, so I don't usually see voting open before the evening at the earliest, sometimes I only vote the next day. Am excited to get started with the voting season LOL!

message 369: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1842 comments I kept stats last year but I started late and I didn't keep them. I only had stats for what got in, not what got suggested. Maybe this year I'll track suggestions too so next year we'll know. Cover (and title) prompts are definitely suggested the most.

This year Pop Sugar expanded their cover prompts to be more inclusive for those with vision problems, e.g. A book with a tiger on the cover or "tiger" in the title, A book with cutlery on the cover or in the title, etc. I liked that the prompts included both cover and title, which both makes those prompts a little easier and also allows for additional more creative prompts. I'm not saying we need to do that, just some food for thought.

Let the voting begin!

Link to the pre-poll: https://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/Z41JSS/

For those of you who are new to the process or just running low on memory space (*raises hand*), for each round of voting, we'll post the suggestions, voting, and results threads in the 'ATY 2023' folder. We'll also make announcements here and in the 2023 info and schedule thread. If you prefer to get notifications rather than refreshing the page endlessly, click the "notify me when people comment" button just above the comment box on the 2023 info thread. You can adjust that to send you an email or to just give you a GR notification depending on your preferences.

Me too. I'm almost done with the main challenge. I'm working on my side challenges and rejects lists now, which is always fun. I love the surprises that I didn't (consciously) plan for. Like a book that takes place all in one day. (I didn't realize it until the very last page.)

This is the perfect time to think about the kinds of prompts you WISH you had this year.

RachelG. I have an idea that I would love feedback on and definitely need help to present it clearly: Read a book recommended by Goodreads. My thought is that you go to the recommendations under browse on your page and choose a book or if those books aren't of interest you could find a book someone in a group recommends.

I nominated something like that last year--- I based it on the "if you like this book, you might like..." feature on a book's page. This version works- I went over and looked at what it recommended for me. I like that I can't do my normal shortcut of looking at a list and finding something I marked To-Read. One of the best books I read before joining GR was there! There need to be a few prompts each year that stretch you to read something you might not have considered right away.
I'm sure other people will argue that they don't like the recommendations Goodreads makes- that's what I heard last year- but you can keep tweaking the recommendations till you get something interesting. I'm def in.

message 384: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1842 comments Last year I floated using the weekly "Great Books Hitting Shelves This Week" feature but it didn't get a second.

If the Goodreads Choice Awards doesn't get in, I'd like to see "recommended by Goodreads" in some fashion.

Me too. At least those recommendations have a chance to be on my TBR. The GR awards have devolved into those Amazon wants to promote. And if you don't care for the recommendations, you can always hit the button that says you are not interested, and it will be replaced with one you may like.

message 395: by RachelG. (new)

RachelG. I would like to somehow incorporate it to all suggestions that we see via Goodreads because the readers also enjoyed xxx to me is just another recommendation as is a book suggested by others in a group setting. I would rather have lots of options than a narrow set.

I'd also prefer not to have any prompts based on watching movies/TV shows, but mostly because I feel it's been a bit overdone. I see some variant of it in almost every single challenge.

Kahlia | 103 comments For the Goodreads prompt, what about "a book you first heard of on Goodreads". That would cover books you got recommended via the algorithm, books that someone else mentioned on an ATY thread/listopia, or even just those random books you've never seen until a GR friend posts a gushing review.
