I can tell you I feel just like the user above - if the prompt stays as it is I will downvote it again, or any prompt that requires me to go through 10+ lists. Simplify it or I don't think it's getting in...

It doesn't have to be American. Could even be something like, a diversity award from your country.. Although for me in the US, that doesn't help that much.
Tracy wrote: "Thank you Lynn! The Diversity Award was one of my top picks. If it doesn’t make it again then I’ll use the books on the lists to help fill other prompts."You and me both!
I will not try to narrow down the listing of awards simply because that is imposing my own preferences on others. I am sorry if it seems to be too overwhelming. My intention is that people will select links and explore to find what interests them. Restricting the listing is not in the interest of increasing our diversity in reading, IMO. I think that is the only fair way to do it. I don't believe in restricting access and there are some more obscure and targeted awards in the list that would be omitted, ignored. etc., if the list was limited. Listing as many awards as possible makes sense to me.
I have no qualms about whether it makes it to the list or not. If at least a few people have gained some exposure to previously unknown awards and/or areas of reading interest, then that's enough for me. Who knows? I may not be able to be on the computer to suggest it again tomorrow and then you can be happy. :)
Own voices is so unnecessarily complex. Not only do you have to find a book with a character who is black or disabled or queer or whatever but then you have to make sure the author is black or disabled or queer or whatever also. Ugh. One of my least favorite prompts.
Yes my phone autocorrected! To be clear I do want a diversity prompt, just not this one as it is right now
Michelle wrote: "Lynn that's your choice but you've HAD multiple people tell you they won't vote it in as it is"To be fair, it was close to being considered polarizing, so I'm sure there are a good amount of members (even if silent) that would vote for it. I wouldn't downvote it, and depending on what else was in the round I may upvote it.
I really want to vote for the author from Asian diaspora category again!! Is Irene on? Will you be able to post it tomorrow?
I didn’t vote for the diversity prompt and I felt the same way as others at first glance. When there is too much verbiage and links, I lose interest and feel it’s overwhelmingly complicated. But having given it more thought, I now feel like I would vote for it. There are some books on the Coretta Scott King list I’m interested in. One of the authors, Vaunda Michaeux Nelson, is a local writer who I met a few years ago and have been meaning to read one of her books! I’m sure I will look through some of the other lists and add books to my TBR. I don’t mind doing a little research to find something new or maybe a book already on my bookshelf waiting to be read.
Nadine in NY wrote: "I really want to vote for the author from Asian diaspora category again!! Is Irene on? Will you be able to post it tomorrow?"I hope someone posts it again. If someone else doesn’t get to it, I’ll try to.
dalex wrote: "Own voices is so unnecessarily complex. This was another one of the irritating prompts PS came out with this year. Having to make sure is the author has the same characteristics as their character is another form of double restriction.
There has to be a happy medium between Read a book by a BIPOC author, and either own voices or something like a BIPOC romance (restricted by genre).
Come on over to the KIS/BIO board to discuss our next batch of prompts :)26. A book with an interracial relationship
Baseline: “In honor of the 60th anniversary of MLK's I Have Dream speech and his hope "little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers." read a book with an interracial relationship (love, friendship, family)”
27. A book related to a chess piece
Baseline: The chess pieces are: The Pawn, The Knight, The Bishop, The Rook. The Queen, The King
28. A book that has an object that is repeated on the cover
Baseline: No explanation given
29. A book by an author with a first name popular in 1923
Baseline: “Some American examples include: John, Mary, Frank, Dorothy, Virginia, Richard. This will naturally vary by country, so feel free to look at other countries as well!”
30. A book about a person/character with a disability
Baseline: No explanation given

I actually wouldn’t have own voices but when Popsugar said it had to be sci-fi there was too much. Equally I had no problem with a “ book by a woman of colour” but when they added it had to be a romance that was too much for me
MJ wrote: If the prompt remains this general, I will down vote it. Again. It’s way too broad and I look at that monstrous list and get annoyed and overwhelmed. And I realize someone put a lot of work compiling that, but my initial response is: anything important in there is drowning in info overload.."I agree. I didn't downvote it this time, but didn't vote for it. Just looking at the list was too overwhelming for me.

Ohhh yes I like this one. I didn't vote for it last time but I think I would now.
@Nadine and MJ, Hi, thanks for the interest in the Asian diaspora author prompt! Unfortunately, I will probably not be able to suggest it in time tomorrow (unless it goes by slower than the last few rounds) so I'd really appreciate it if one of you (or anyone else) could suggest it for me!Here's what I was going to post:
A book by an Asian diaspora author
In honor of fighting Asian hate (heightened due to the pandemic), read a book by an author who is a member of the Asian diaspora (diaspora refers to “the dispersion of any people from their original homeland,” either voluntarily or involuntarily). This would include American authors of Asian descent as well as, say, a Korean author living in Japan, or an Indian author living in Hong Kong. It also includes authors of Asian descent regardless of if they themselves are immigrants/expats or are the children/grandchildren/etc of immigrants.
This does not include Asian authors living in their home countries, where they are not minorities/discriminated against for their ethnicity, which was covered by this year's "Asian or Pacific Islander author" prompt.
Note: I can only speak for Asian-Americans, but we don't consider "diaspora" a negative word, and use it very frequently to refer to ourselves.
Some Asian diaspora authors include:
- Kazuo Ishiguro (English novelist of Japanese descent)
- Salman Rushdie (Indian-born American-British novelist)
- Ocean Vuong (Vietnamese-American poet)
- Celeste Ng (American author whose parents immigrated from Hong Kong)
- Jhumpa Lahiri (American author of Indian descent)
- Michelle Zauner (Korean-American author and musician)
- Jenny Han (American author of Korean descent)

The Asian hate is really awful. I don’t know if it happened elsewhere but in the UK one variant was even called “ the Indian variant” really not helpful

Thank you for this Lynn. It gives me new sources to review. (And this wasn't created in a short period of time either.) Thanks again.
Has anyone started a list of books that won a diversity award? Did everyone look at the banned book list? I was surprised by the number of books that I would like to read. I guess I always thought they were mostly books for young audiences. For what it’s worth, I suspect that the banned book list is made up of many books that fit a diversity category.
Thomas wrote: "The Asian hate is really awful. Yes, so would I - we need another genre prompt :)
I voted for the diversity award prompt and my approach was going to be to pick a book I wanted to read that seemed “diverse” then to see if had won an award. As comprehensive as Lynn’s list is (and I too appreciate your work) I wasn’t going to start there to find a book.
Irene wrote: "Oh jeez, must be because there's a lot larger of a south Asian population in the UK, whereas in the US we get "China virus" and all that :(..."There is a lot of Islamophobia in the UK, though obviously racists don't take the time to find out if a brown person is Muslim before attacking them for being Muslim. But we also had "the Kent variant", I'm not sure we were being anti-Kent (that's a county in England). The WHO brought in the Greek letter designations to stop this happening, since variants did start out being called by where they originated. There were several months between B.1.617.2 being detected in India and the WHO officially calling it Delta, so I wouldn't assume people calling it the Indian variant at that time were being like Trump.

The people who named it that were proably reffering to where it was found but I think the amount of Asian hate already present was exaseprated by "idian variant" I'm not saying the doctors meant it that way it was jsut an unfortunate result.
When the suggestion thread opens, if anyone would like to resubmit "A book that could be used for at least five of the 2023 challenge prompts" please do so. I'm not going to be available during the suggestions process and I'd love to see this prompt idea get another chance. If no one else is interested, that's fine.

Five could be a BIO option.
I don’t know if it is just me but none of my GR’s notifications are working. Just in case, this is happening to anyone else (and they see this post) you might want to check unread or the ATY 2023 thread if you plan on suggesting or seconding an prompt today.

I imagine you are correct. There is probably quite a bit of crossover between the two...

Siobhan wrote: "I thought it was a bit weird that nobody had said anything for 11 hours!"That made me laugh! I guess that's when you know the notifications are not current!
I truly wish Amazon would maintain this system so it worked better, but I doubt that will happen in the near future. I had to log in repeatedly for 4-6 weeks, then that subsided. Now my books keep getting retagged and I have to keep changing to the correct edition and/or which dedicated shelf it is listed on! Sheesh!
Siobhan wrote: "I thought it was a bit weird that nobody had said anything for 11 hours!"If you go to the discussions page under the Community tab, you can still see what new comments are posted to the most current topics. That helps a little when notifications are being wonky.

Ditto- it was too much. It was like "pick any book and then find the award it won!" Prompts that have thousands of options don't appeal to me.

I'm going to propose culture or cultural - which includes cultural diversity and subcultureshttps://www.goodreads.com/genres/cult...
Cultural refers to books that depict a place or time and its culture.
Books shelved as cultural involve:
*Culture and society - social media, popular culture, societal issues, politics, media.
*Culture - values, religion, beliefs, norms, and social behavior.
*Culture change and trends.
*Cultural Diversity - books set in a culture or sub-culture, e.g. black, indigenous, people of color, Asian, religious groups, immigrants, organizations.

I'm planning to suggest Irene's Asian diaspora idea. I am now worried that the two ideas will "fight" - I wouldnt' mind having both, but I know not everyone feels that way

Honestly, I would vote for Asian diaspora. "Culture" is way too broad for me- if you click on the "cultural books" list at the bottom of the link, it's 47,000 books!

LOL it's good there are two of us! If you suggest it before I get there, I will second it. I'm afraid to wait, these posts go so fast!
