I am not sure I understand this prompt. Are you suggesting that we read a book where the title is different in another language (your example) ? Wouldn't that be the same thing as reading a translated book, which we already have on the list?

Or are you thinking of books with alternate titles (Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone/ Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone )?

I need more clarification to form an opinion.

I actually love dual timelines (though I agree that the version where a woman finds someone's diary is a bit overdone), so if there was interest I would really enjoy a prompt along the lines of a "a book that includes more than one timeline"

(I think that wording would also open it up to certain multiverse books, time travel stories etc, for those who really don't like dual timeline books)

Huis Clos (which means behind closed doors or in an enclosed space and is used in law for "in camera" ) got translated as "No Exit" in English.

And Canadian author Lawrence Hill had The Book of Negroes title changed in the US. (That's not really a translation issue.)

I think it would be interesting to find 'a book that has been renamed.' I am not sure I agree that any title translated into another language is actually renamed, unless you are going to read it in that language.

Oona Out of Order was changed to The Rearranged Life of Oona Lockhart in Britain because they wanted to cash in on the trend of "The xxx Life of First Name Last Name" that was popular.

The trouble is some research would be needed to find these. Sometimes genre books like sci-fi, fantasy or romance that are early works get reprinted later with other titles when the author is famous.

i agree with you. translated doesn't mean the title has been renamed in any way. There are examples though that the titles have been completely changed though.

i was looking at Spanish language translated titles just to take a gander and lots of them were the same title as the original like Harry potter books and midnight sun to name the ones I remember.

Popisho by Leone Ross is the same book as This One Sky Day. The former is the US title - the latter is the UK title.

Languages do not always directly translate directly, as you know. If we include translated titles, it would have to be based on whatever language it was originally published in. I think this could be confusing, though, to people not reading the threads.

English and Australian books are sometimes published under different titles in the US for some reason, eg Migrations/The Last Migration

Most of the French author's I had to read in school had titles in English that were just the translation. So, there is a huge difference between a close translation and a complete re-naming.

I mentioned to someone that in Grade 12 French class we read Sartre, Camus, and Ionesco. She asked me if I'd read "No Exit" and I had no idea what she was talking about.

There are lots of books with different titles in the UK and the US. For example, Rivers of London was published in the US under Midnight Riot, which I think is a lot worse title.

Translated books also go by different translated titles. For example, Camus’ L'Étranger goes by The Stranger or The Outsider.

I like this idea but it is difficult to phrase it simply.

I didn’t realize I have read Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea because in Hungary it went by the title Captain Nemo (which I like better, btw).

I like the prompt "A book that's been published under multiple titles. But I don't think translated books should count unless the title is wildly different. Because we do have a translated book prompt.

But "l'étranger" *does* mean the stranger / the outsider in French, so that's not a different title, whereas Midnight Riot and Rivers of London are clearly totally different. Or am I misunderstanding the prompt?

We are still working out the prompt and what should count :)

It is difficult to phrase it. Would Harry Potter and the Sourcerer’s Stone vs. Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone count? I think if it is the same language, different wordings should count, but if translated, it would have to mean something significantly different to count.

For example, My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry and My Grandmother Sends Her Regards and Apologises seem significantly different translations to me so they would count, even if they are close to the original. The Stranger/Outsider both are literal translations. I think we could leave it up to the reader to decide.

Especially when it started with a conversation between my colleague and I about the Spanish title of where the crawdads sing, which is completely different (la chica salvaje).

A book that has been published under multiple titles umbrellas the entire idea I had in mind.

Hopefully we can find lots of books to fill a list.

We have a translation and several title prompts already this year that I don’t see the need for the different title prompts. Perhaps, it is an idea to save for next year. I think, it would have a better chance then and would be different than just a translation like we have currently.

Another book that could fit the prompt is The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida. This was earlier published in Indian subcontinent as Chats with the Dead. Poonachi: Or the Story of a Black Goat was renamed as The Story of a Goat when it was published internationally. This would be fun research.

True, but all the cool character prompts we’ve had have not been voted in. I would love to see more character prompts. Maybe we need all 15 votes to be character prompts to get at least one or two more.

Careful what you wish for, to be fair we'd have to have a list/awards only poll first because they are less represented than character prompts so far.

Personally I'm against forcing certain kinds of prompts on the list. If we're not coming up with good enough ideas to get voted in normally, then so be it.

We (mods) are generally opposed to having type-specific polls, unless we are down to the wire with none and we have had a lack of suggestions that represent that category. It's not something we are considering at the moment.

There are some people who are SO opposed to list prompts. Which is funny cause then you have people like me who on some prompts are all "if there is no list to get ideas, I won't vote for it."

I usually don't down vote them unless there is absolutely nothing on the list i want to read or at least sounds interesting. a lot of the lists so far had two options that are on my tbr, which means i didn't downvote them but didn't upvote them either.

People say they want a prompt about 2023 or the number 23, but then they hate everyone's idea. I suggested something genetics (for the 23 pairs of chromosomes) or connected to Hollywood because the Hollywood sign was created in 1923. People did not like either suggestion.

People who have tried to suggest the 23rd book on your TBR list or anything with the number 23 in it, were also criticized. We will see if that 2nd or 3rd book in a series gets in.

Never listen to people. The voting is what matters. Prompts that everyone in the discussion groups say they love don't make it, the ones people gripe about do. That's why I nominate and vote what I think sounds good and hope.

I meant to say that previous years we had things that linked to the year that also made prompts that appealed to everyone. Not that no one has suggested 2023 ideas. Like counting the nth number on your TBR could be any year? It isn't uniquely 2023. And Hollywood was either really narrow or wide depending if you have to read about Hollywood or related to any Hollywood film.

I don't think either were discounted because they were 2023 related. 🤷‍♀️

It's been frustrating this year. Similarly, people keep saying they want new ideas, or FUN ideas, but then the fun ideas get downvoted. I'm not sure why there seems to be such a disconnect this year.

Just because people are vocal one way or another in the discussion doesn't mean that it will translate to votes. For example, my whole IRL book club votes for ATY without reading any of the conversations lol. They all complete ATY, so it makes sense for them vote, but the way they vote often doesn't reflect the conversations being had.

I wouldn't be discouraged if your prompt doesn't make it to the top of the list. That doesn't mean it's not liked, it's just not as liked as the other prompts in the poll that week.

It's just not a list prompt that the general public would use, and it tends to have a lot of books on it. Some of the outside list prompts have a lot and some are more limited.

That's my general rule with list prompts (or any prompt since most prompts are associated with a listopia). If there's under 100 books, even if the list is "books Pamela thinks she should read next year," I'll almost automatically downvote. I rarely look at the actual books cause if there's enough books, I can find something on it.

It is definitely a list prompt in my book. I think it got in because it has lots of diverse options and it is generated by our group, not some random group of people we don't know and who may not have the same taste in books.

I am trying to read books I own. If they aren't on the list, I probably wouldn't vote for it.

I am not sure why we need another list prompt if people aren't voting for them.
