I would not have. books made into movies or books BEING made into movies is a pretty common prompt on book challenges already. I thought one based on Hollywood itself was a good idea, I just don't read books about celebrities (even fictionalized ones). I also was concerned about it being too US-centric for a lot of our members. Maybe a Bollywood prompt would work better? That I might vote for.

I know Amy that there is always something else, and with help I'm sure I'd find something I'd like. I sort of OD'd on fairytale retellings, fantasy stories, and Disney related books in a challenge 2 years ago. I'm not into superheroes. I must have read 10 or more. 1 more is fine, but 3 more would be a stretch. If there was a book about UP or the film with Joy (Inside out?), I'd read that.

For UP, I would read A Man Called Ove or The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared for an elderly character.

For Joy, maybe You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty? There is a character named Joy who encourages her sad friend to get back into dating and life. The book is described as "inspirational". Sounds joyful to me!

There is also a book called Inside Out & Back Again that is really great :)

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 3750 comments Pam Are you here? Do you want me to suggest this?

"Read two books from two different genres, that are connected in some way."

Examples:
*A romance novel with a woman in STEM (The Love Hypothesis), and a non-fiction book with a woman in STEM? (Lab Girl)
*A fantasy book set in early 1900s New York City (The Golem and the Jinni) and a mystery/detective novel set in early 1900's New York City (book:Murphy's Law).
*A fiction book about trees (Greenwood or Overstory) and a non-fiction book about trees (Finding the Mother Tree).

Does anyone have additional examples?

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 3750 comments Is anyone hanging out and able to suggest for someone? I suggested Pam's idea, so I can't suggest another.

Here's the idea. Feedback?

I started with City mouse Country mouse

Read two books about City and Country Life, Past present, real, fantasy

This could be one book set in a city or metropolis, and one set in the country or a remote island, mountain or planet.

Or one book might involve both city and country life

Suggestions: Ancient Rome, Modern day Rome, Paris, New York, LA, Rio,
Country could be any area where people are spread out, a remote location, island community, Siberian Peninsula, a dessert

Perhaps, someone who did enjoy them logs on and suggests them for you.

Should I have stuck with:
Read one book set in a city and one set in the country.
Past, present, real or fantasy.
Read one book set in a city, metropolis or densely populated area
Read one book set in the country, a sparsely populate place, or a remote area such as a mountain, island, colony or planet.
Or read a book with both city and remote settings.

Laurel Kristick | 874 comments What do you think of the three love types - Eros, Filios, Agape - for a 3 week prompt? Often translated to sexual love, brotherly love, and religious love. In The Ship Who Searched, they were defined as love involving the body, love involving the mind, and love involving the soul.

I like the terms, and I think it's good to have a book with love. Some people don't like the romance genre, but there are lots of books with love that are more than just romance novels.

So could you have one book with a steamy romance, a second about family love?, and the third - love of god? soul mates?Marriage?

If it doesn't get in for the multi-week, I wonder if it would work as a single prompt. Are there books that would show all three?

You did good ones- thanks! As much as I love listopias (would love them more if I could filter!), this is such a wide open prompt. It seems once you've decided what the connection is, then a list would work but pretty much all listopias work!

message 1079: by Rachel (new)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3287 comments Coming to this thread super late but I really like the three movie studios idea and I was also very confused why so many people got stuck on the idea that the books needed to be focused on animation. With the "related to" wording I thought it was pretty clear that the book had to be connected to the movie in some way, but not necessarily as directly as a novelization of the movie. So for something like Scooby Doo, you could read a book involving dogs, a detective story, or something as closely connected as Meddling Kids by Edward Cantero.

Personally I preferred the original version of the prompt when it was a little more limited. I took a brief look at Warner Brothers movies and immediately got overwhelmed by the sheer number of options, but I still love the idea. It's a unique spin on the very common book-to-movie prompt.

On the other hand, I'm much less enthusiastic about the scavenger hunt prompt than everyone else seems to be. It would be an automatic downvote for me if it was 6 weeks, since I'm not overly keen on multiweeks to begin with. In theory this prompt sounds fun, but I can't really help seeing it as a complete freebie since it doesn't take much to connect each book.

message 1084: by Rachel (new)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3287 comments Sorry, can't reply directly because I only have access to the app currently, but in response to Pamela, I know that it started that way. What I'm saying is that it seemed to me that the initial interpretation became oddly limited even though the wording itself was more open. People seemed stuck on the idea that the book had to be about animation, instead of making a connection to a specific movie

Nadine in NY Jones | 2287 comments NancyJ wrote: "You're right Nadine. It was "about" Hollywood. BUT, would you have been more likely to vote for it if the prompt was written differently - to include books that were made into movies?..."

Personally, yes. Because I don't know how to find a book "about" Hollywood, it's too nebulous and I feel directionless. A book made into a movie is clear and crisp and I understand exactly how to find that book. Yes, it's a category that's been done before, but it's a category I don't mind seeing again and again, because there are SO MANY books that are made into movies! I just don't like it when it's limited to a particular year, because then you're limited to only a handful of movies, and it's possible you already read all you want to read.

So now that the multiweek prompts are in the voting stage, back to single!

I've been thinking of the I Have a Dream Speech anniversary and the "one day right there in Alabama little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers" section- what about a book with an interracial relationship (friendship, romance, family)?

Could also do a location he mentions in the speech.

There's also books that have MLK or his assassination in it-- I feel several fiction books I've read mention it, but I can find no lists for that.

The song Pride by U2 is a tribute to MLK so any books related to MLK, civil rights, race relations, etc. could be used for the pride prompt. For that reason alone I would not upvote a prompt exclusively about MLK.

Now we have a LGBTQIA+ prompt it would be good to have a race prompt and I think I have a dream is a greta angle I see the point that it could be covered by the rpide prompt but so much else can be sued for pride I think this one as well would be great.

People of a Certain Age (raises hand here) and culture will always think of the U2 song when they hear pride, but many others have no clue or other associations

Course, I'm also the person who when asked if she wanted to go to Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen said "always, ever since U2 did a video there!"
