This is an interesting idea.
I wonder if it should be limited to movies only or if television should be included as well. It could be a book related to media rather than film?My son is a fan of Warner Brothers so I asked him about his favorites: Lord of the Rings, Batman, DC movies, Looney Toons, King Kong and Godzilla, Gremlins, The Shining, IT, the Matrix, Mad Max, Fantastic Beasts and Harry Potter franchise, The Meg, Ready Player One, Dune

I am thinking that including tv as well would open it up to much. Any book can connect with something on TV or in theaters. I'm honestly thinking films in general is too open. Animation seemed like a good way to limit the possibilities but that doesn't seem like a popular idea.
I would be excited for any prompt related to visual media be it animation, movies, or whatever.(Edited to be more clear)

I think the chain of books idea is interesting, but 6 weeks might be too many.
If I wanted a six week prompt that’s the sort of thing I’d vote for. But I probably will want something smaller

I like this and would vote for it. I like scavenger hunt types of prompts where I need to look at my TBR and maybe read something I haven't thought about for a while. (My TBR is over 800 books)
I would vote for the 6 week idea too! I like that the connections are all pretty straightforward so there will definitely be options for each one, it's just a case of searching for them. If people think 6 is too many, I think it would still work as a shorter version of 3, 4 or 5 weeks.

(My husband taught my kids how to get me to agree to something. They'd ask for money for an expensive concert, and then follow-up with a request for money to go to the movies instead. It always worked.)
I would be more likely to vote for a single prompt such as "a book related to animated or anime films." OR better yet (because of the Hollywood anniversary too), "A book related to a film or films." You could include all the anniversaries in the write-up. That would allow people to read about a film company, something about the industry, or read a book that was made into a movie. It might seem too light-weight for some people, but there are many great books that only got my attention because of a movie. (I finally read Remains of the Day this year and I loved it.) I would not require that you saw the film.
I liked the Japanese anime film of Howl’s Moving Castle, which might be Studio Ghibli. Many people also loved the book. (It's not my kind of book, but I liked it enough.)
I read some books about Walt Disney for a leadership class one year, and he had a real dark side that doesn't match the company mythology. I might have a book about Pixar, which is a great model for how to create a culture to encourage creativity. I think it's now part of Disney.

LOL
I agree with NancyJ about 3 animation related books being a lot. I couldn’t even imagine 1. When some non-animation related books related to those studios were mentioned, I could see reading at least one of those. So my request would be to leave it to anything related to a movie studio (not just animation) and have it as a single week prompt.

I am generally on the app, which is pretty lacking - I have to scroll for days to get to the end of this thread and it usually isn't worth it. I’m also a big fan of the scavenger hunt idea and I’d vote for it. But I think 6-weeks may be long for people. Some don’t like multi-week prompts in general. So maybe narrowing it down to 3 weeks?

It's a book related to a movie that happens to be animated, not to animation specifically or even to the studio specifically. For instance, for the movie Cinderella, I might read Finding Cinderella by Colleen Hoover just because of the same name in the title. Or A Case of Cat and Mouse because WB's created Tom and Jerry.

Agree! I really like this suggestion, but I think 3-4 weeks might fare better. I am one of those with a huge TBR, and I love going through to it to find books to fit these prompts and reading things I wouldn't have otherwise chosen. Would definitely vote for it.
@ °~Amy~°I guess I attached to animation because that’s what you first said. I know there was discussion about dropping that part, but I didn’t pick up that it was decided to open it up to other films. I didn’t want to read a novelization of Bugs Bunny, etc.
Your suggestions of loose interpretations helps, but still not sure about reading 3 of them.

I love this idea too. If it was shortened, I'd prefer that the first book was linked to the final book, rather than being a free choice.
RachelG. wrote: "I wonder if it should be limited to movies only or if television should be included as well. It could be a book related to media rather than film?My son is a fan of Warner Brothers so I asked him..."
Please leave it open. I am not a movie or tv person - probably not the only one.
As far as the film idea goes, I like the Warner/Disney/BBC. Or the 3rd one could just be "non-US company". I think if you specify Studio Ghibli or anime, some people will find that too narrow.
I think 6 is pretty long for one prompt, 3 or 4 might go over better. But I like the scavenger hunt theme idea, going from one to the next.

If the scavenger hunt was shortened I would like to take out the cover and title portions as the others seem more original. Just my opinion, not sure what others would think.

Six weeks is a lot. We are limited to a total of 6 books in this poll, so I think that means that a 6 week prompt would have to get the most votes to be accepted at all. If two 2-week prompts have more votes, there would only be room for another 2 week prompt.
Connecting books is really fun for me, but I change my mind a lot, so I'd keep breaking and fixing chains. (I finished my 2022 52 weeks, but I still feel the urge to substitute books with ones that fit the prompt "better.") I think three 2 week prompts would be easier to manage.
Now that you introduced the idea, I'm sure some of us will try to make chains for a side challenge.
NancyJ wrote: "Now that you introduced the idea, I'm sure some of us will try to make chains for a side challenge."I'm already wondering if it might be possible to make my whole 2023 challenge a big chain :)

That would be fun, Marie!
Nancy, I think I'll do a side challenge of making chains of my books.
Popsugar had a challenge this year that was "title begins with the last letter of your previous read". It was a PITA, but I did appreciate that it took a bit more planning (I ended up doing I Know Why the Cage Bird Sings and Saga Volume 4). That could be one of the scavenger hunts steps.
how about a two books related to a contronym/contranym. Words that are their own opposite. For example :
fast -- quick or stuck.
left -- remains or departed
peer -- person of nobility or an equal

I'm curious. Last week we had a Hollywood prompt (for the 100 year anniversary of the Hollywood sign). Would you have been more likely to vote for if it you could have read a book that was made into a movie? (It wasn't clear to me.)There are a lot of movies based on good books, in almost every genre. The books are usually better (though not always). There are many books that I wouldn't have even noticed if I didn't watch the Academy Awards, or if I didn't hear about them from ads, reviews or friends. I know that many people only read Pride and Prejudice because they liked the movie.

Please, please, please no 6 week prompts. With so many interesting single week prompts, I am not a fan of devoting more than a couple weeks to multiple week prompts. Often I struggle to find books I want to read for multi-week prompts, although the 2022 prompts were much better than some in the past.
I do think the chain idea is interesting, but a chain of 3 not 6
I agree about shortening the suggested 6-week prompt. I do like the 'scavenger hunt' aspect.I am always intrigued by the multi-week prompts and had two suggestions that I'll throw out here:
1) Read 2 books, each published in a different year of the 21st Century: 2001, 2002, etc…through 2023.
(23 different years from which to select)
2) Read 2 books related to your date of birth. Could be by publication date (released on same day, or in same year, or in same month), setting place same as your place of birth (city, state, region, country), setting/title is same day of the week…
NOTE: No one should be able to figure out what your DoB is from this! LOL ;)
Okay, folks, have at it!

You can never please everyone! I think keeping it to Studio Ghibli (or BBC if we think people won't like Ghibli) is the perfect balance of broad/narrow. There are A LOT of topics covered in Ghibli films. Opening it up to any other movie studio would paralyze me with limitless choice. I like reading challenges to point me in one direction.

hmmmm. At first my reaction was "no." Because I've almost exhausted all the books that were published in my birth year. But, there is one book set in the city I was born that I have not read yet. And there are A LOT of books set during the time of year when I was born. I don't know if I'd want to read TWO of these books, though.
A lot of people have a strong reaction to "personal" prompts, so this one has a hard fight ahead of it.

Tracy wrote: "Multi-week prompt idea:"1 book set in a cold climate, 1 book set in a hot climate""
Tracy I like this idea a lot. And I also like the general Hot/Cold idea you mentioned.
I have 3 cold climate books I want to read - one in Iceland, one in Sweden and another one in Antarctica - I loved How the Penguins Saved Veronica, and there is book I want to read about a female researcher who got cancer and couldn't leave Antarctica. I really enjoyed Disappearing Earth which is set in a Peninsula in Siberia.
And I want to read more books set in the tropics too. I loved Euphoria set in Papua New Guinea, Marriage of Opposites in the Caribbean, and I read a book about a woman escaping central America to go north.
This week England is a VERY hot climate. I used to live in St Paul and the winters were MUCH colder than Buffalo and the Summers were hotter.
