Bernard Doyle, former mayor of Boston, hopes that someday the political bug will strike one of his sons. Sullivan who is the oldest and Doyle's biological son is known as kind of a screw up. Doyle still hopes one of his younger sons, who are black and adopted, will be the one to carry on his political aspirations. After yet another political speech Doyle drags the boys there is an argument upon leaving. It's snowing hard and a stranger pushes one of the boys out of the path of the unseen car bearing down on him. She saves the boy's life, but is hit by the car herself. Kenya, her 11 year old daughter is with her at the time. The book which takes place over 24 hours describes what happens and the connection between these characters.
This was an ok read for me. The characters were kind of flat and the situations simplistic, The ending was unsatisfactory and the reader left to imagine how they ended up where they did. It was a hard book to get into and the characters not life like enough to really care what happened to them.
