If We Were Villains by M. L. Rio

If We Were Villains
If We Were Villains by M.L. Rio

Oliver Marks has just served ten years in jail - for a murder he may or may not have committed. On the day he's released, he's greeted by the man who put him in prison. Detective Colborne is retiring, but before he does, he wants to know what really happened a decade ago.

As one of seven young actors studying Shakespeare at an elite arts college, Oliver and his friends play the same roles onstage and off: hero, villain, tyrant, temptress, ingenue, extra. But when the casting changes, and the secondary characters usurp the stars, the plays spill dangerously over into life, and one of them is found dead. The rest face their greatest acting challenge yet: convincing the police, and themselves, that they are blameless.

Oh man, I've been reading that book since June 2021, it's not an easy read altho it's interesting. Maybe I will finish it this year lol.

I'm serious and it actually bothers me that I haven't finished it yet, I woke up yesterday thinking about it! But it's just very wordy and tedious even through the subject is very tantalizing. Each sentence feels like half a page of stuff. The school concept is pretty brilliant... Also danger legit lurks on every single corner, behind every door, its non stop to the point of being little exhausting. Students cant even walk alone, it's just not safe, nothing is safe ever 24/7. There's no reprieve from danger.

I will finish it dang it! Gorgeous looking book too.

Also apologies for my complaints to the person who nominated it, that's just my experience with it.

message 72: by Joey's deathly tomes of death (last edited May 19, 2022 01:37PM) (new)

Joey's deathly tomes of death | 33 comments It's not a typical novel, but manga. I would highly recommend The Drifting Classroom by Kazuo Umezz.
It's a survival horror classic from the 70s where an entire school was transported into a post apocalyptic future. It has a sort of Lord of the flies like feel but with
horrific creatures in a lone school.

The Drifting Classroom Perfect Edition, Vol. 1 by Kazuo Umezz

Are we actually allowed to nominate manga? Because I'm keen to sample Junji Ito at some stage and a group/buddy read would be great!

Due to the limited availability of Battle Royale it will not be featured in the poll. For those interested, feel free to set up a buddy read for it here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...
