Deedee | 2346 comments Guy de Maupassant's first published novel was A Woman's Life; however, he had published random short stories before then. Would A Woman's Life count as his first published work? Thanks!

message 53: by Pia (new)

Pia Would this combination work:

Book 1, debut book by a man:
Then We Came to the End

416 pages / Published in 2007

-----------------------------------------
Book 2, # 11 in series by a woman
Wilful Behaviour

295 pages / Published 2002

Thanks!

Because de Maupassant is famed for his short stories, I am going to rule against A Woman's Life as his first work. sorry.

I'll fit it in elsewhere, thanks for checking!

Bridgett (brikie) | 5 comments Congratulations on your new niece! My only nephew is 1 years old, but he lives in China, so I envy that you get to snuggle and hold your niece and nephew.

Okay, so I'm a little confused if The Martian would work for Option 1. If you look at first published date (2011), it predates the other listed works for him. The Martian was also included as a contender for the 2014 Debut Goodreads Author award. I think what really muddies things up is that he published various minor works on his website before anything was traditionally published. Can you let me know if this book will work for our challenge?

Donna Jo Atwood | 2412 comments For 25.1 I would like to read Louis L'Amour's Sackett's Land published in 1976, which is listed as book #1 of the series. According to GR, however, it is not the first book of the series that was published; that would be The Daybreakers published in 1960. I have read neither of these, but need to know which would work for this task.
Thanks.

If GR is listing it as #1 in the series, that is OK.

Book 1, by a male author, #1 in a series: The Holy Thief by William Ryan new-to-me, first published 2010, 352 pages

Book 2, by a female author, not first book or #1: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K. Rowling #6 in the series, new-to-me, first published 2005, 652 pages (AR BookFinder - ATOS Book Level: 7.2, Interest Level: Upper Years, Ages 14 Plus, AR Points: 29.0)

Both books are new-to-me.
Years first published: 2005, 2010
Total pages = 652 + 352 = 1004

Hi Claire,
I think you are trying to submit this for recording, not asking a question? if so, wrong thread!

Kim | 764 comments Just want to make sure I meet all the requirements:

Book 1 The Dante Club
*first book
*author is a man
*first published in 2003
*380 pages
*book is new to me

Book 2 The Plain Sense of Things
*not first book or first in a series
*author is a woman
*first published in 2008
*248 pages
*book is new to me

Books are published at least 2 years apart. Book 1 is at least 100 pages longer than Book 2.

Thank you.

contributions to multi-author works are excluded, so you would be fine

Blueberry, I had a daft moment. The House Girl won't work, as contributions to multi author works are ignored. Sorry!

message 71: by Jamie (new)

Jamie | 421 comments I think I'm okay here but I would like this verified

The Art of Fielding by Chad Harbach by Chad Harbach

Wikipedia notes:

Reception - The book had a great deal of publicity prior to publication, especially for a first-time novelist, and Harbach received an advance of more than $650,000 after a bidding war for the publishing rights.

Harbach is listed as one of a group of contributors to a collection of essays, n+1, Number Four: Reconstruction,
prior to publication of this, but I think this "contributions to multi-author works are not to be considered" means I can ignore that

Thanks!

message 74: by Teri-K (new)

Teri-K Equal Rites is the first in the Discworld - Witches series, and listed as such in the smaller print on the first page, but it's also considered #3 in the Discworld series. Can I use it for Option 1 as the first book in a series, or does the other disqualify it?

(I'm reading the Witches series all out of order and have this one on hold.)

Thanks!

Sorry, the Discworld series trumps the subset.

I was afraid of that. sigh :)

It's not really a problem, I'll find something else. Thanks for getting back to me.

message 77: by Catie (last edited Apr 25, 2015 03:48PM) (new)

Catie | 185 comments How do pennames fit into this? I'm considering The Day of the Triffids by John Wyndham, his first publication writing under that name. However, he published three stories under the name John Beynon before The Day of the Triffids (although they don't sound nearly as interesting), and these were republished as being by John Wyndham once he'd achieved success with novels under that name...

As much as it pains me (Day of the Triffids is great!), the fact that they were reissued in Wyndham's name means that the (originally) Beynon books will be counted as his first publications.
Sorry!

Ah, I thought that might be the case - I'll have to find another task for it. I'll go back to getting frustrated with male authors for never having debuts or series that I want to read!

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly :)
