GR frustrations! (And a second question added...)

I’ve had exactly the same frustration Cindy and can’t work it out. It just switches the previous read to the new edition eg the audio version. So annoying. Would be equally keen on a solution!
Sorry to say Cindy, I have found you need to delete and start over. You are able to add the correct read dates: so make sure you write those down if you don't know them. This has been my solution
I haven't done it in a while but....I think all you have to do is go to the home page for the book you now want to add reading a different format or edition or translation. Click on the all editions link. When list comes up, pick out format and edition you now want to read. Then just tag it currently reading or read or whatever. It may take a few minutes but it should now show up on your shelves as a separate book. If you then click on find duplicates, both editions should be there. Now I don't know if in your GR Reading Challenge list whether they show up separately or as 2 of same. Might depend on whether it is a new addition or translation vs. Just a different format of same edition.
I have a list of books in my duplicates that is deliberate - a print and an audio in some cases, or different translations, or british vs. American .

But even so... I would be able to re-add one, but how do I add the second one?
Theresa wrote: "I haven't done it in a while but....I think all you have to do is go to the home page for the book you now want to add reading a different format or edition or translation...."I will try this again, but I think I did try it... and all I get on the editions page is "switch to this edition" rather than the option to choose from the drop down "read", "currently reading", or "to read".
I know I have (a few) others that I want there to be two different editions, but I don't know how I did it! Probably something to do with the two different Read dates, but I don't remember.
A second question - how do I add a cover? A book I'm currently reading only has one edition listed with no cover. Am I even able to add a cover to that edition, or (even if it's the same edition), do I need to start fresh and add a new edition?
Thanks!
LibraryCin wrote: "A second question - how do I add a cover? A book I'm currently reading only has one edition listed with no cover. Am I even able to add a cover to that edition, or (even if it's the same edition)..."
I just add a new edition with a cover I downloaded or rarely a photo of book cover I took. I often do that to add # of pages as too often the edition options don't show # of pages and I track that.
If there is a way to edit existing I have no idea how. I have looked.
Theresa wrote: "I just add a new edition with a cover I downloaded..."Thank you! That's probably what I'll end up doing.

Just as you added the first-it will allow that-are you using a computer or your phone? The phone APP sucks, so if that is what your are using that could be the problem
Cindy - read date might have to be there. I will look at my duplicates and see what I can figure put.
I have the read date twice, Theresa. I was unable to look at the list of editions and add a second one to "read" (or "currently reading", etc). The only option is to "switch". Joanne, look like I'll have to try deleting, but I don't understand why deleting and starting over would make a difference. Once I have it once, why would it be different when trying to add a 2nd edition - whether I'm doing it years later or immediately after.
Oh - I am using a computer, a PC. Firefox at the moment, but I could easily switch to Chrome.
Cindy - I just looked through my duplicates which I keep. There doesn't seem to be any one distinguishing thing that lets me have multiple editions and even different exclusive tags - I made an exclusive audio tag for the few audiobooks I read to track. They still show in GR annual reading challenge because they have a read date. Some have multiple read dates some don't. Some have same tags some don't some have reviews, some don't. I just know that I added the extra edition (in one case I have 3 editions) from the home page of the specific edition.
Try pulling up homepage for the edition/format you want to add - then set up the tags you want that edition to have. Reboot your bookshelves and see if that book is a duplicate.
Theresa wrote: "Cindy - Try pulling up homepage for the edition/format you want to add - then set up the tags you want that edition to have. Reboot your bookshelves and see if that book is a duplicat..."This works! I just did it to add a different edition of Gentleman from Moscow and shelved it as want to read! Once you confirm adding it you can then go in and edit the edition itself like add read dates.
I have books that I show I have read twice, but as a non-librarian and not very detail-oriented person, I just ignore the edition and add a 2nd date. Even recording book as read twice in the same format was only recently made possible by GR. But I can understand how many people would like more options.Unfortunately, GR's goal isn't to help readers track books accurately, to help groups, or to do anything except to sell books and other stuff, and possibly to sell our personal info as well. I feel it's well worth it anyway.
Theresa wrote: "Try pulling up homepage for the edition/format you want to add -.."I'm not sure how to do this! I know I've had it accidentally happen (when I don't want it to). Ugh!
ETA: But I will try again...
Robin P wrote: "Unfortunately, GR's goal isn't to help readers track books accurately, to help groups, or to do anything except to sell books and other stuff..."
And you have a good point, Robin!
Ok. I got the new edition of the other book added along with a cover. As I looked closer, I see it is a different edition, so it's nice that it's not really a duplicate, but with a cover added. Now, I'll try again with Anne...
Ugh. I currently have the paperback as my sole edition. I went to the editions page.
They all say "switch..."
I clicked on the Title of the audio book to bring up the book's home page with it as the "highlighted" (so to speak" edition. It still says "read". When I go back to the editions page, that edition says "switch"... and I still only have the paperback edition as the only one.
I'm going to try again. Opening the book's page with the audio selected. I will switch Read to Currently reading and see if both are then selected as editions for me. The paperback as "Read" and the audio as "Currently reading" (I hope!).
Oh! It worked! Thank you Theresa! So now, I should be able to mark the audio as Read, as well, and presumably they will appear as duplicates.
Nothing like not being obvious... even a little bit!
Of course, now it says I'm reading it for the 3rd time. Will try to fix that up, but I think that will be easier.ETA - except there no longer seems to be an option to delete one of the Date Read lines? There is a little i for information that "allows" me to "Merge editions" or "View this Edition".
I "merged" them (hoping it would merge the two with the more current dates, but there is nothing that allows me to choose which editions I'm merging! Suddenly, all three dates are listed, but I don't know if it deleted the edition I just added... and I have three dates and don't know how to delete one.
omg, GR - you'd think you could make these things easier!
Ok... somehow a new tab opened where I was able to delete (with some fiddling/adjusting of dates) one of the lines with date read. I don't even know how this happened! Again, with all the fiddling and not knowing how things ended up as they did, I double checked and it does appear that I have both editions I want marked as read.
Jeez, that is just terrible to try to figure that out!
Of course, the review is attached to the wrong one, but at least I have the correct editions and the review and everything is there. I don't think I'll worry about the rating and review attached to the wrong edition. It's close enough at this point!
LibraryCin wrote: "Ok... somehow a new tab opened where I was able to delete (with some fiddling/adjusting of dates) one of the lines with date read. I don't even know how this happened! Again, with all the fiddlin..."
I think when you reboot you will see tbe review regardless of which edition it is.
But agreed, GR makes these things so complicated when you want to do it but yet when you don't want it to happen it just appears.
I believe if you "merge" editions you will effectively delete one of them ... so what were two editions, now becomes one. If I recall correctly, you were granted "librarian" status way back ... so you have the option to merge, while most of us do not.
I saw that option, too. But I wasn't sure what would happen if I merged them. I don't recall now if I tried or not. If it happens again, I'll give it a try! Thanks!
LibraryCin wrote: "I saw that option, too. But I wasn't sure what would happen if I merged them. I don't recall now if I tried or not. If it happens again, I'll give it a try! Thanks!"
It may merge them together for everyone though, not just one user.

It may me..."
Yes, if you merge you will be merging two separate editions into one ... for EVERYONE. That is the book's record is affected, not just your list.
Oh... that's definitely not what I wanted to do, then. Thank you for the warning!GR really should figure out an easier way to add more than one edition and to switch one for another, but to be able to choose which to switch out if more than one edition is already selected.
I know this was very frustrating for you, Cin. I think, in your shoes, I would have deleted all my records and reposted. I know I have a couple of books where I have different editions, but I usually just post an addendum to the existing review remarking on any changes (e.g. this time I listened to the audio) and remarks having to do with that. The only time I've actually tried to do two separate reviews were when the two different editions were listed separately in GR (e.g. Breakfast at Tiffany's and Three Stories vs Three by Truman Capote: Other Voices, Other Rooms; Breakfast at Tiffany's; Music for Chameleons.
Book Concierge wrote: "but I usually just post an addendum to the existing review remarking on any changes (e.g. this time I listened to the audio) and remarks having to do with that. ..."Now that you mention it, that is often what I do, as well. I didn't have a review already written for this one, so it was a new review, but I still got in my head that I wanted two separate editions on my shelf for it, since one was audio and one wasn't.
I'm usually not that picky about the exact edition, as much as I like to have the cover image(s) reflect what I read. That being said, I don't usually add a new one if I can't find the cover of the one I've read. I just try to pick one that's close.
IF you want more than one edition of a book in your booklist, it might be necessary to click on them from different sources. E.g. if you click on a book from a tag list, a listopia list, or the link from someone else's review, you might get different editions. I always have duplicates, but it's usually not on purpose.I hate that some classic books merge the ratings for all versions of a book, including abridged books (e.g. Count of Monte Cristo 500 page vs 1200 page versions). I also wish they separated the ratings for book with different translators.
I usually add a second edition the way Theresa described above, but I do have an alternate way I use pretty often too. If you know the ISBN or ASIN of the edition you want to add, use that number to search for the book instead of the title. When you open that search result it will bring up the edition you want. Then you can change the tag/status of the edition from the editions book page (often you will find that it has defaulted to read for some reason). Then you will have the new edition and the old edition. I do this when I buy kindle or audible versions of books I have the print version of already. This is similar to Nancy's suggestion, but with the added bonus of not having to find a list that includes your addition first. If you want to add more information or tags (other than simply changing it to want to read or read), on the old book page (I haven't found out if it shows anywhere on the BETA page), above your review you will see the option to review this edition, switch to this edition, or review your other edition. Click on review this edition (don't select switch unless you want it to get rid of your old one).

I have read ta paperback edition of Anne of Green GAbles before. I have now also listened to an audio edition. Someone I had managed to get a seoncd edition added, but it wasn't the correct audio. When I "switched to new edition" to pick the one I wanted, it switched away from the wrong one - the one I wanted to keep.
So... in my fiddling, I've now ended up with only one edition (read 2x), but I want to have both the paperback as read once and the the audio as read once.
How do I do this on purpose? Thank you!
