Title: The Sage's Lot
Series: Blood and Balance: Book 1
Author: Andrew Freeman-Hall
Release Date: 22/07/2022
Length: 185,000 words
Genre Epic Fantasy

I'm looking for ARC readers for the first novel in my epic fantasy series, The Sage's Lot (Blood and Balance: Book 1). My biggest inspirations with regards to writing styles are Brent Weeks, Joe Abercrombie, and Nicholas Eames, so expect plenty of swearing, blood, and a pinch of humour. I can email over EPUB and MOBI copies to anyone interested. The blurb is below:
'The entire world is teetering on the edge of war and madness the likes of which haven’t been seen for an age, yet all the schemes of the ambitious and the cruel matter very little to Arkos Rhidain, a table-scrubber wanted for murder. That his victim had been the very worst kind of fiend seems to mean far less than the weight of the dead man’s purse when balancing the scales of justice, and even less still when said killing was achieved through the summoning of fire.
An unfortunate way to discover you’re a divinate, but one day (if he lives long enough) Arkos might wield the drop of divine blood running through his veins as a fully trained sage, the heroes and mystics of which a thousand slurred songs are sung. But that day is a long ways off. Right now, Arkos’s sole concern is foiling the deluge of danger that keeps hounding himself, his friends, and his timely rescuers. The gods may have a plan for Arkos Rhidain, a plan of blood, of glory, of struggles and turmoil that could set the entire world ablaze. But frankly, Arkos couldn’t give a damn. All he wants is a soft bed to rest in, a fresh ale to drown his sorrows, and for people to very kindly stop trying to kill him.
Fate can be a fickle wench, but that’s just the sage’s lot.'

Andy,

This has got to be THE BEST BOOK EVER SO FAR!!!!
I literally started this last night (well at like 0300) and did not go to sleep until 0700 and that was forcing myself. I didn't want to put the book down. I could kick myself for not reading this sooner. Holy CRAP!!!

Andrew Freeman-Hall | 8 comments Well that's about as good of a response as I could have imagined :) . My sole aim with the book is to entertain, and if I make a little money of it then all the better. I’m really happy that you’re enjoying it.
Sorry for the late reply. Work has been manic and I’m finally getting some time again now to attack the book. Also, you may notice that some of the quotation marks are the wrong way around. My editing software decided to have a bit of a meltdown after its last update so now I'm having to go through the entire book and manually check every single quotation mark and apostrophe. Needless to say, it’s pushed my release date back until I can scrape together the enough time to fix it all.

Oh No! I left an entire review on the book, you didn't see it? WHAT? That book was MAGNIFICENT!! DO NOT CUT YOURSELF SHORT ON THAT BOOK. I want to know where book 2 is? I hope you are half way through with it. Oh no! When was it supposed to be released?

Andrew Freeman-Hall | 8 comments Don't worry, I have seen your review now and it blew my mind. Seriously, thank you so much. Having people I know saying my writing is good is one thing, but having a stranger who knows the genre well say the things you did is an entirely different deal. I got emotional, as did my wife (who has been telling me for a long time that my writing is actually good).
I'm about halfway through making the stupid editing software corrections, so it shouldn't be too long before it's ready to publish again. And yes, I am about 30%-40% through Book 2, and honestly, I’d say that Book 2 is far better than Book 1, at least structurally. I actually knew what I was doing when planning Book 2 instead of last time when I just started writing without any real clue of story structure and the mechanics of turning an idea into a book. My work is busy as hell over the summer but really really quiet over winter, so I’m hoping to get the first draft of Book 2 done this winter then spend next year hammering out a finished copy. Depending on how well Book 1 does will affect if I can afford to take any time off work to work on Book 2, but I’m really not thinking that I’ll make much off the series until Book 3 or 4 are out and only then if I get very lucky. There are a lot of great writers out there who never make any real money from it. I’ve got a story arc for 6-10 books, so at least there’s no danger of me running out of content.
Thanks again for reading and reviewing the book. I really can’t stress enough how much what you said in the review helped boost my confidence and my motivation for writing. You have genuinely made a difference.

Andy,
Those have got to be the nicest and kindest words anyone has EVER said. I must have boo hoo(ed) for a hot minute.
I cannot believe you ever having self doubt, your wife is so right about your writing. You are so extremely talented. I loved, loved, loved your book. I so wish your second one was already ready and can only hope it is longer than the first. ( please let it be)
You may think I helped you, but you helped me. So many people tell me I should write reviews, but I think I write horribly.
I've always known what I want to say, but don't know how to put it to paper. I literally sit there and write out each review by hand first, then type it into a word document, then submit the review. So my reviews actually take me hours to complete, they aren't just some run of the mill reviews. My earlier ones are, because I didn't know what I was doing. So thank you also for your boost of confidence. Maybe one day I will start an actual blog, or get paid to write reviews.
As for you, I'm not sure how some of these authors get published.
But put your book on NetGalley, and Eidelweiss. I really like NetGalley because they have well known authors on it. Not sure how much it costs etc.
I truly hate that your editing software took a nosedive, I know that set you back something fierce. It also sucks that as an author that your whole book remains on your shoulders because anyone can steal your work. Good lord, what a cluster you know what.
(I'm so glad I'm a nurse. LOL) OMG 6-10 books? That's the best news I've heard all week! Now only if you could pound them out like James Patterson and not like George RR Martin, we'd be in happy land. LOL
You do know next year is a LONG time away right?
SIGH!
Anywho!
I am so glad that I was able to make a difference! That's what I was put on this earth to do.
Next time, listen to your better half. :-)

Winter

Winter | 17 comments Andy,
Do you still have copies of your books? Have an Author interested in reading it. He said he went to Amazon to no avail. 😒

Andrew Freeman-Hall | 8 comments Hi Winter.

I can certainly email them a copy just like I did for you, only now it will be the completely finished and formatted book. I have litterally just submitted the book for publishing on Kindle 30 minutes ago, so it should be up for sale within the next 3 days, but I have no prolem sending free copies to people if they will write a review for it.

You had me worried. When he said that it was gone, I was like "NOOO!" I should have gotten a Hard Copy of your book. Not to mention signed! This way when you make it (And I know you will) I can say, "Yup! I knew him when.. Smile!
I will let him know Andy
Hold on! what's changed since the copy I have? Maybe I should get a new copy too..

Andrew Freeman-Hall | 8 comments Don't worry, nothing story-wise has changed. I've just caught all of (I hope) the inverted quotation marks, added the completed front and back matters, and sorted out some of the bugs with the map titles and such. Basically I've turned it from a manuscript into a finished book. The book is now live on Kindle and is free on Kindle Unlimited. I'm only charging 0.99 for it outside of KU as well seeing as I really just want to get people reading it. I can bump the price up after the sequal is out or after I've got enough good reviews for Book 1.

I did Move my Revised review over on Amazon for you BTW, so there is a review there for you already. Just did some minor adjustments to it. :-)

Andrew Freeman-Hall | 8 comments Thanks so much for putting the review up on Amazon. It will really help. Like I said, I just want to get it read by as many people as possible, and you've clearly already mentioned it to other people so I just can't thank you enough. I can't wait to get stuck into writing Book 2 again when I finally get more free time.

Wish I could do more for you. That book is a hit, I just wish more people would read it too. I will send it around again.
I know what you can do for me. When you get it in Hardcover, will you send me an autographed copy? I'd be over the moon.

Please find time for Book 2, Don't get in the slump where you let people forget your characters. Even though there is no way I'd forget them. Shyt! I can probably recall every single one of them, and believe me "that's saying a lot" MY MEMORY SUCKS!! Especially now that I've been suffering from Long Covid. UGH
