Relaxingreader | 82 comments Hello all!

I have just picked up a book with ISBN "0261102311", that does not match the one I linked here as the subject of the topic.

My version has a different cover, and has 423 pages instead of 400.

A bit of googling brings me to this website, with these two pages:

http://www.tolkienbooks.net/php/detai...
http://www.tolkienbooks.net/php/detai...

The cover of my book matches the second link.

My question here is, what should I do? Create a full new version of the book? It isn't just an alternate cover, as the page number is different, and one seems to have replaced the other in 1998 (according to the description on the page at my first link).

Scott | 8549 comments If the ISBN is the same, an alternate cover edition should be created.

23 pages isn't much; it could be attributable to different text size, different starting page, or other minor differences. The older page count may even be incorrect.

Relaxingreader | 82 comments The same seems to be the case for:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/8...

With proof here:
http://www.tolkienbooks.net/php/detai...
http://www.tolkienbooks.net/php/detai...

And the same for:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/8...

Proof:
http://www.tolkienbooks.net/php/detai...
http://www.tolkienbooks.net/php/detai...

The books on goodreads matches one version, and I have just obtained the other version of each of the books.

The last one is especially interesting, as it is listed as having 1145 pages, whereas mine (with the same ISBN) has around 430 pages, depending on whether you include the index in the back.

Thanks for your response. Does my new message with the other two books (and the bigger page count difference) change anything, or should I make three alternate cover editions? And if so, how would I do that?

Scott | 8549 comments The page count was changed at some point. I have reverted it.

Thank you! So now I just press 'Add an Alternate Cover Edition' on these three books, upload the covers from tolkienbooks.net, and change the pagecount on the new versions where needed?

Scott | 8549 comments Yes. The page count will be blank on the new edition edit page, so you can just fill them in from your copies.

Relaxingreader | 82 comments Thank you! I will do all of this tomorrow.

Please note that tolkienbooks.net is not a site we can use for book covers or other book data. Please see: https://help.goodreads.com/s/article/...

Thank you for reminding me of this. From what I can gather, the versions I own do not seem to be listed on any of the websites in that article, they are all the newer cover.

What is the procedure in this case? I own these books, so I know what I'm looking for when it comes to pagecount and cover.

Scott | 8549 comments You can upload your own scans.

I don't think the book will fit under my scanner, but I can take off the dust covers. Thank you!

Also, don't make an Alternate Cover Edition because it will move the ISBNs. The cover that is on Goodreads with that ISBN is the same as the one on Amazon. The Amazon cover should match the edition with the ISBN. You can create a new edition and then cross-reference the ISBN in both librarian notes and description.

Scott | 8549 comments Yes, sorry, I assumed that yours was the newer edition. If not, follow Elizabeth's instructions.

I'm glad all of you come in to help, because half the things you mention I would never have figured out. Can you explain what you mean by 'it will move the ISBNs'?

Aside from that, I just press the ' Add a New Edition ' button, add all the information, and then add 'alternate cover version of: in the places you specified, and it should be fine? Do I leave the ISBNs empty on these new versions, or can they still be added?

Scott | 8549 comments When the alternate cover edition link is used, the ISBN (or ASIN) is transferred to the new edition and a note is left on the old one. This is because only one record can have any particular ISBN/ASIN, and it is GR policy to place it on the latest edition.

So yes, you would leave the fields blank on the new edition (the system will not let you enter the ISBN if it is on another edition.)

Elizabeth (Alaska) When you click "add an alternate cover edition" the system removes the ISBN from the edition and puts in the new edition. The system also creates librarian notes on each edition.

The ISBN is a unique number and can be on only one edition, so your new edition will not accept your entering the ISBN. You will want to make notes/description entries:

This is an alternate cover edition of ISBN 0261102311.

It is very helpful if you add the link to that edition, but is not required. It is also very helpful to add on the edition with the ISBN

An alternate cover edition of this ISBN can be found here (providing a link).

In this second instance, when someone searches by ISBN they will, like you, find a cover that doesn't match what they have. But with your helpful link, they will easily find their cover edition.
