I have read upto Chapter 66 and I am pretty sure who the killer is.

(view spoiler)[Billy saw a horse being buried. They built it up so much about this only to have this in our faces! I am sure he saw someone get strangled but he might have exaggerated about the death. He came to that conclusion because he saw them bury something in the pink blanket.

Kinvara just lied to Strike and Robin about the painting. And the fact that she is sleeping with someone and that someone is hiding from Robin. I think the painting is really important for Kinvara or there is some clue in it. But there is only one person she could be having an affair with and that's Raphael. I hope I am wrong about this because she is his step mother(kinda) and it would be really disgusting. But I can't imagine anyone else among the known characters to collude with her. Also, Strike was connecting what Della said and what Raphael said. I think it was about how Aamir had an affair with Della so he was probably projecting that Raphael is doing the same with Kinvara? (view spoiler)[Hey I think Chiswell was having an affair and he was off with some woman when he lost freddie's clip and when someone came home to give it Kinvara got to know so she planned onkilling him? And involved Raph in it but they aren't the lovers. She involved him for the money? They staged the call from Chiswell to Kinvara and also staged the call from Chiswell to Raph.

Okay but what about the bent sword? Raph showing his hate towards Freddie because he never got that love from his father? The Lecheis pills missing from Kinavara were with Raph cause they are having affair if I assume that they are actually having it?

How Flick got to know about the Gallows and the payment?
What Chiswell meant by they keep tripping themselves one after the other?

So many questions!!
I think Strike theory talks about the real killer. They wouldn't just say that his theory was wrong at the end. It must fit into his theory! Oh god what is his theory!

That last scene where raph held robin as hostage was out of the hollywood movies lterally!

She making the killer talk and the killer talking about the whole incident. This whole book was like a dramatic movie! Could have been a nice script for juicy action film but murder mystery not so much!

If you would have removed the element of the strangled dead child from the story I would have stopped reading very early.

Did I just spend time on 500+ pages to come to this!!

No mystery about dead child....the reason of blackmail was also such a disappointing one

It will be hard to go to sleep with such disappointment and emptiness that this novel has brought on

It really was a disappointment. I absolutely hated this book. It was boring, disgusting and predictable! Even that 20% plot wasn't interesting. I held back my comments yesterday because I didn't want to ruin it for you until you guys read it yourself :D

Yeah agree with you. My disappointment would have been less if the book was 300 pages or so but after reading 500+ pages if I am gonna get this....it is a huge disappointment.

It is so huge that I feel like taking a break from reading!

And why Raph even took Robin hostage to make it clear to them that he is the killer....what was that seriously!

One thing I am grateful about is writer didn't make Robin and Strike kiss!

The whole book started with mystery about the dying kid and no mystery at all there! It would have been so great if there was a mystery there and connection of it to the present!

And what's the point of blackmail? Gallows? Seriously?
I didn't expect though that they are this expensive. 40 thousand pounds is a bit much expensive for that!

It was fun having buddy read with you two. Although I would have preferred a better book.

You both should try reading Cuckoo's Calling it is really good. I read it approx 6 years ago at least then I found it really good.

Before closing this thread and archiving it I want to say that it was really fun watching you discuss the book, I loved that all of you were that active.

Also *applause* for finishing the book 😂 from the comments that I read, and your ratings, it was not a good book. From the outside it looked like you were talking about more than one book with so many things happening.
