We have Poirot living high up in a blook of flats. The fifth floor. Just under him is Pat Garnett, who is with her friends Donavan Bailey, Jimmy Faulkener, and Mildred Hope. Somehow, Pat has lost the key to her flat and Donavan and Jimmy agree to break into it through the coal lift. Trouble ensues and they accidently end up in the third floor flat and eventually encounter a dead body. Fortunately, Poirot hears much of the situation and comes downstairs to help. Surprises ensue!

Nicole (nicolevickers) | 1814 comments Thanks, Mark! I just read this short story once again - I'm so used to watching the episode that it caught me by surprise that he was not living in Whitehaven Mansions!

Yes. This is a very early story in the Poirot canon and he has not made it to Whitehaven Mansions.

Nicole (nicolevickers) | 1814 comments It always surprises me when George is mentioned, because he never shows up in the episodes with Miss Lemon and Capt. Hastings – where was hiding all those years!

This is a fun and quick story to read, especially because it all happens in such a short period of time and you know his little gray cells are in overdrive.

Thanks for commenting! I was beginning to think there was no interest in the stories!

I really hadn't thought of the appearance of Georges with or without Hastings of Miss Lemon. To my recollection, one never even mentions the other!

Nicole (nicolevickers) | 1814 comments Lol, Mark! Are we the only two reading?

There are definitely clues re: the coal lift/the light switch, but I didn't catch them the first time around.

I love the early Poirot stories/episodes! I can't remember - is Georges in The Big Four?

I've already started watching Waverly, and will read the story once you're ready to post. :-)

I started the discussion. I was waiting to see who was coming along!

PugMom (nicoleg76) | 2014 comments Sorry, I had to finish a book for review so I didn’t read this story until yesterday.
I’ve read it a few times and it seem like (in my head) Poirot solves it quicker and quicker each time!
I actually forgot who the culprit was. I think I got confused with the fake name on that note having the same initials as one of the suspects. But it turned out to be that other guy!
