Chapter Breakdown
Guidance for DQ setters
Aim for a reasonable number of questions: 4 - 5 is typical. Please don't post too many - any more than 7 gets unwieldy!
Use consecutive numbering of the DQs for your days. So, for example, if Day One is posted as questions 1-4, Day Two should start at number 5 etc.
Don't worry too much about your questions: you aren't being tested on how clever your questions are!
Hints and tips:
- Is there a quote that jumped out at you? Use that in a question.
- What about the characters - do they generate strong feelings? No feelings? - either way, we can explore that!
- What about that plot twist?!
- Explore the writing style: is there an unusual structure being used? what's the tone of voice like? or the point of view?

Volunteering for DQs from Team Hector!
The randomiser is run three or so days before the start of the BOM, and added to post 2. There's also a new post alerting people, so if you have notifications on for this thread you'll see it 😃

DQ days have been assigned.
If you can't do your nominated day you can substitute a listed team mate. If you are late in submitting your set then the next unique team will take your spot

Sorry! Had a minor SNAFU and misread the randomiser list : Suzanne has replaced Vicky as per randomiser.

Perfect my copy just arrived today so I'm all ready to go!
Lexi sent these to me a couple days ago to post for her as her field work schedule makes computer access complicated. But they are her questions and her DQ points.
DQs Day 1: Chap 1-11
1. Have you read the The Sun Down Motel by this author? If so, does it change your expectation for this book? Either way, what are your expectations for this book?
2. The MC writes about cold cases and is in her late 20s and divorced. I have read quite a few horror/thriller/mystery books recently where the MC is a recently divorced, usually a bit older, woman. Have you experienced this as well? Why do you think authors might make this choice? Why do you think the choice was made for this book?
3. This section includes the start of the interview. Did it go the way you expected? Any one comment really stick out to you?
4. What do you think about the ghostly occurrences in this section? How do they add to the story (or maybe detract)?

I did read it as the BOM the other year. As per my answer to Q4 - I'm expecting the ghostly stuff to be true, not just figments. Also knottiness in the plot and atmosphere!

Different reading circles! But yeah, having older characters with complicated personal histories is more fun than wide-eyed naïfs.
3. This section includes the start of the interview. Did it go the way you expected? Any one comment really stick out to you?
Nothing really, no.
4. What do you think about the ghostly occurrences in this section? How do they add to the story (or maybe detract)?
They were very random (though based on Sundown, not entirely unexpected). It's strange - we don't know enough about Beth to be expected to believe they are actual ghostly-ness, rather than unreliable narrator, but based on past reading experience, I'm expecting them to be true.

I haven't read any other book by this author. I am expecting a mystery and thriller, probable plot twists to find the murderer.

I don't read much mystery and horror books so I haven't noticed the trend, however I can see that it can be more interesting to have a curious more mature character leading an investigation than a foolish more childish character who would normally be used as a victim or super lucky survivor.
3. This section includes the start of the interview. Did it go the way you expected? Any one comment really stick out to you?
I thought it was interesting how there was so much back and forth at the beginning, with Beth getting parts of Shea's story as much as sharing part of her own.
As for the comments I thought the one about her mother being trapped was curious.
4. What do you think about the ghostly occurrences in this section? How do they add to the story (or maybe detract)?
I thought they detracted from it. I am not big on ghostly explanations for murders.

In 1977, Claire Lake, Oregon, was shaken by the Lady Killer Murders: Two men, seemingly randomly, were murdered with the same gun, with strange notes left behind. Beth Greer was the perfect suspect--a rich, eccentric twenty-three-year-old woman, seen fleeing one of the crimes. But she was acquitted, and she retreated to the isolation of her mansion.
Oregon, 2017. Shea Collins is a receptionist, but by night, she runs a true crime website, the Book of Cold Cases--a passion fueled by the attempted abduction she escaped as a child. When she meets Beth by chance, Shea asks her for an interview. To Shea's surprise, Beth says yes.
They meet regularly at Beth's mansion, though Shea is never comfortable there. Items move when she's not looking, and she could swear she's seen a girl outside the window. The allure of learning the truth about the case from the smart, charming Beth is too much to resist, but even as they grow closer, Shea senses something isn't right. Is she making friends with a manipulative murderer, or are there other dangers lurking in the darkness of the Greer house?
A true crime blogger gets more than she bargained for while interviewing the woman acquitted of two cold case slayings in this chilling new novel from the New York Times bestselling author of The Sun Down Motel.
