Welcome to the Where the Crawdads Sing Buddy Read Discussion thread! This thread officially opens on May 5th and anyone can join at any time. Please keep in mind that spoilers are allowed in this thread but only up to the group's current reading place. Do not spoil the book if you've read further than the group. Any extra days can be used to catch up!

Each day we will be reading by chapters or page numbers. Page numbers are an approximation based on the hardcover or paperback that is the default on Goodreads. The suggested Buddy Read discussion schedule is as follows:

This story wound up being a very slow start for me up until page 50 or so. Then, it started picking up when (view spoiler)[Chase Andrews body was found in the marsh (hide spoiler)]

As for Kya, its pretty hard reading her story and how everyone has left her - her mother, brothers sisters and then eventually her father. The only constant she has in her life is the marsh. The marsh is her only friend.

You can see how she misses her mother and is so hopeful that her mother will come back. It was hard to read how her mother could just leave without taking her children with her.

I'm only on Chapter 7 at the moment because I haven't been feeling well over the past few days - winter's been hitting hard here lately - but I'm slowly cathcing up. Yes, I also found it starting out slow but I really enjoyed the author's way of describing the marsh and the surroundings, its so descriptive and vivid.

Kya is such a little sweet bean, so connected to the nature around her. It was pretty sad to see her family leave one by one. I hope she finds someone to accompany her soon :(

This is such a great book! So glad you are enjoying this. I especially like her interactions with the African American characters.

It's been turned into a film with Daisy Edgar-Jones.

I'm feeling much better now, thank you! Managed to get up to Chapter 20, probably going to smash out the rest of the chapters tomorrow.

I'm in love with the author's descriptions aaaah it's so vivid, it makes me feel like I'm actually there.(view spoiler)[The whole fishing and eating supper with her father was so wholesome, it really nice to see him treating Kya like that especially after her mother and siblings left. But then he got back to drinking again and suddenly disappeared too and left her all alone this time. Also now that they found a piece of evidence that could lead them to Chase's murderer I wonder who did it? (hide spoiler)]

I remembering seeing the trailer a while back, really looking forward to the film when it gets released!

Welp I'm like 6 days late but I finally finished this. I hope you are feeling better now as well!

There were a few scenes that made me go 😳 so I had to read quickly over those and actually stopped for a bit because there seemed to be no end to it lol. I was also getting a little bit annoyed with the description of the marsh just going on and on, but it got better toward the end and wow, this is one of my fav reads this month. Spoilers for the ending: (view spoiler)[I'm so happy she ended up with Tate and got to spent the rest of her life with someone who actually cared for her. And even though we barely got to know Tate's dad, I feel like he would have been really supportive of Kya too. Jumpin and Mabel were the best, I loved their little interactions between them and Kya, especially at the end when Mabel tells her that Jumpin thought of Kya as his daughter. I was glad to see that she didn't end up in jail for the rest of her life for Chase's murder and actually got away with it. Chase was a total douchebag and kinda deserved it in a way 😂. And she wrote so many books! And she stayed in her little shack in the middle of nature and all. Overall, I really enjoyed this, the wholesome scenes really brought some tears to my eyes.
