Big Buddy Read - Dracul (Stoker's Dracula #1) by Dacre Stoker starting June 1st, 2022
We’ll I just finished this and it’s a 5 star for me. Great pick, guys!I’m a big fan of Dracula and I feel like this one has the same vibe and feels like a very plausible genesis for that book. I thought this one had perfect pacing and didn’t overdo it with the creeps. Just enough to keep me wanting more. I love a good vampire story where zero vampires sparkle.

Awesome Felina! I’m also really loving this one too and got to about 20% in.

I'm 55% in. I'm loving this so far. It's a relief, because I haven't read an amazing book in a little bit. Bram as a literary character is fascinating. Do we know if any of the journal entries actually were Bram Stoker's? Obviously, some of them can't be, but it'd be cool to know if any of the childhood ones about his sickness were true.(view spoiler)
The way this is written is even capturing my attention even more than Dracula did. I think my main problem with Dracula was that it wasn't initially written for the long format, and instead in a series of publications, and so it repeats itself a lot. I'm not finding that problem here at all.
Great pick, I'm very grateful. This book wasn't even on my radar.

Glad you're enjoying it Emilie! I am too! I haven't read the entire author's note but it does say..."Portions of Dracul came from his (Bram's) journals, and as we searched through them, Bram's words were resurrected." It sounds like the authors used his journals (which seem to be mostly notes, story ideas and family stories) and ran with it.

Here is a link from Wikipedia about Bram Stoker's life - it is lengthy but if you scroll down to where it says "Early Life" it does talk about his childhood illness and him being bedridden.

Wow Karla! How nice of Dacre to offer his time like that!
I'm on page 233. This is such an easy and fun read! I love Matilda, it's pretty rare to read about a woman from this time period that's strong and ballsy. Loving that!

I think I’m up to about ch20. I really like this so far. It has a very real feel to it. It does seem pretty straightforward at this point, so I’m curious how this is going to turn.

Good! I’ll take the help.

I am so creeped out that my weird dreams have increased! lol
I really did dream about vampires during the night! It is odd how some books just absorb into your psyche. Normally I can read horror stuff and I don't even get a ping of a dream but this book - wowzy!

Yes, I knew we were in the same boat, and I was not surprised at all to see you couldn't resist either, haha. I've wanted to read this one for a while, so knew I couldn't pass up a good excuse to squeeze it in.

I'm about 250 pages in. The more I read it, the more I seem to like it. The writing style took a bit to get used to. I was able to wrap my head around what some of my friends call "the british style of writing". But yes, I'm going to finish the series for sure.
You’ll have to tell me how you like it. It’s written by a different author and it doesn’t have great reviews.
It is a different writing style than I am used too. It is done so well I couldn't imagine the book written in any other manner.
I only just started, but I love how as a reader, knowing the book, everyone has a pretty clear idea of what must be going on with Nanna Ellen, but everyone in the book is so oblivious to it.
Loved it. It has been awhile since a read a proper horror novel. The level of detail that brought you into the moment with the character was great. It seems there is a trend of authors editing out those details to keep books under 350 pages. Not a much of spoiler just something a good FYI

Yeah, the Red Knight gets better once you get passed that first 200 pages or so, I thought. I haven't read any more in the series yet, but I will for certain at some point. I've heard each book gets a little better as you go also.
I've made it to ch31, about 25%. I'm loving the gothic setting to this. I'm feeling the same thing you are, Trustno1. It's different to seemingly know what is happening while the characters do not.
I'm almost 50% done with the book. I'm on 248 out of 528 in the book before clicking on the spoiler.(view spoiler)
I'm loving this book! I am a huge gothic lover so this is clicking all the boxes for me.
The chapter from page 248 to 282 has got to be one of the most engaging chapters I've ever read!
I'm so glad everyone is enjoying this! I felt the same way with all your spoilers. I hope you all continue to love it!😊

I'm at about 40% and just love everything about it. There's so much going on yet still so effectively letting the creep factor rise step by step. I was a bit worried it would be a bit boring as to be stacked just with common vampire tropes, but it's inventive...like I definately wouldn't have expected the dragonflies. And I absolutely agree on the Scooby Doo vibe with the Stoker kids sharing experiences and trying to solve the mystery.

I just finished this and two thumbs way up!! This was a perfect read. I absolutely loved every moment of it. Nothing was repetitive and the creepiness was just subtle enough until the climax occurs. This novel is just how I like my gothic horror. I'm definitely adding this to my must own list!

It's so weird because I usually don't have dreams about the subject of the book that I'm reading. This one is bringing in all the creepy vampire vibes while I slumber. hahaha".."
That is what you call "power of suggestion" and then it absorbed into your brain so you could help me escape the vampires! LOL
