bailey (bailsbookshelves) | 1223 comments TIPS & TRICKS FOR OUR UPCOMING WORLD MYSTERIES TEAM READATHON
Readathon duration: June 3 to June 12, 2022 (10 days)
Sign-up deadline: May 22
Team announcements: May 27

Have you signed up for our group's second-ever team readathon?
Are you vaguely interested but don't think you can spare the time?
Well then, this post is for you!

Time Commitment
Are you worried that you don't have the time for a 10-day readathon? Well, every participant will be part of a team so what really matters is your team's performance. Even if you can only spare time to read 50 pages a day, your team will benefit from your presence!

Friendship
A team-based challenge is a great way to get to know some of your fellow group members better!

Readathon Prompts
Each team of 8-10 members will tackle the prompts from a mix of Lore of Yore, Celebrating Diversity, and Paris quarterly/monthly challenges.

Choosing Your Books
Try to line up books that might fit multiple prompts. When reading as a team, another teammate might fill your intended prompt before you finish your book.
Hate one or two of the prompts, or can't find any books that fit? Just skip such prompts; another teammate probably has those covered!

Book Length:
The readathon is not the time to read that 880-page fantasy novel you've been dying to start! Alternatively, you have two choices:
(1) Finish your chunkster before the readathon starts; or
(2) Read all but the last 100 pages before the readathon. Then, you can count it for a prompt (but only count those 100 pages toward the readathon). A book has to have at least 100 pages left to count toward a prompt!

Reading Momentum: Take a look at the readathon prompts and choose eligible books that you really want to read. Don't try reading books that bore you during the readathon; that will only dampen your reading enthusiasm.

Readathon Benefit
You'll make some serious progress toward your reading goals while making new friends at the same time. What's not to love?

If you've read this far, you are no doubt ready to take the plunge and sign up for our team readathon here.
The sign-up deadline is May 22nd so do it today!

I always plan and then all my plans go out the window when I see what everyone else is reading...LOL

Planning's half the fun, even if all of our reading plans don't work out. :D

My approach is to look through my owned books and TBRs, trying to identify shortish books that satisfy the harder-to-fill prompts. *whistles innocently

Honestly, I find some of the prompts quite difficult, so I'm happy for the extra time to gopher suitable reads.

Canadian Dragon | 904 comments ok (laughs) I know have lists for the prompts, some of these were really hard.

Rebecca Ray | 1285 comments I'm starting to go through my TBR and look for books for some of the prompts. . . . and trying to finish (or mostly finish) the three chunky books I have going on right now before the readathon starts!

It's a great idea to "mostly finish" your chunksters. I'm also planning to start a long book around the end of this month. :D

I've made a list of about 15 shortish books (250-300 pp) for the readathon. I'm definitely NOT going to be able to read them all but would like some flexibility in case my intended prompts get filled while I'm still reading or something.
I'm in Hype mode already, hehe.

L Y N N (book_music_lvr) | 2389 comments My pile for this readathon is ready! LOL And I have another pile of shorter books next to it, just in case!

Some of these prompts seemed tough until I started looking through my books!

Erm, most of my pile consists of "shorter" books.
Does that make me a bad person. 😇 *adjusts halo

Canadian Dragon,
It will be interesting to see how our various book choices come together in our team.
Go Team Chupacapra!

Most all of the books I've selected are shorter with the exception of a couple of Buddy Reads that are longer and I will pre-read a portion of before June 3, making sure I leave at least 100 pages in each.

So, I didn't mean to imply one pile has longer books, just a couple, and all the rest are pretty short.

Halo?!? You have a halo?!? Huh. I would have never guessed! LOL ;)

Lorraine | 2383 comments Ahhh this is where the Francophone in me wonder…should I read 509 pages of the team books (less 100 pages) or concentrates on books that are 250-30o pages…

Or should I read this book in French!

For me, a team readathon is most enjoyable if I can hit a good balance between books that fill prompts and books that I've been wanting to read. Each team gets points for filling prompts and a big part of the fun of a team readathon is working together as a team to fill as many prompts as possible, whether or not get the best score or not.

I recently participated in a 9-day marathon where I saved my 496-page scifi (2022 Hugo award for Best Novel nominee) for the last two days. I'd been wanting to read this book for months, so the timing worked out just right.

As for which book you should read, that's a question should be discussing with your team. 😊

Well, it's a very elusive halo, so you have to watch very carefully.
Oh no, Lynn! You blinked and missed it!
Um, better luck next time? Hehe

Oooooh, I loved that book! But why are you posting your comment in Tips & Tricks? This is info that you'll want to share with your team to help with team planning.
