Don Dunham Gav451, Lucky you ! You are in for a real treat, "The First Law trilogy " rocks. Just so you know, when you burn through the trilogy there is "Red Country " ... for the pain.

message 852: by Don (new)

Don Dunham Gav451. you haven't even met San dan Glokta yet.

message 853: by Don (new)

Don Dunham "Wild Seed" by Octavia Butler. I am really enjoying it as I do most of her work. I intent to read everything she published provided I can get my hand on it

Julia | 957 comments I'm currently reading and enjoying Oryx and Crake. I've read just over 100 pages, but 40 pages ago, I almost put it aside as too bleak.

That's a great book. I have thoroughly enjoyed the first 2 in the series and the twist at the end of the second is amazing.

Emma A darker shade of magic , the Heir of Novron and Fool's Errand.

message 859: by Greg (new)

Greg Louderback | 3 comments I'm almost finished with The Magicians Apprentice by Trudi Canavan and I have The Traitor Spy trilogy by Trudi Canavan to read next. In Magicians Apprentice the world building is lacking in scope. For the characters to be able to travel across an entire country in less than a few weeks by horseback in any direction reduced the size of it. She should at least refer to unknown lands and weave them into the story. There's also very little character building, but the few there is needs more depth instead of skipping between them so much. This book is a stand alone volume that doesn't seem to have its own plot.

message 860: by Julia (new)

Julia | 957 comments Greg,

I'm picking on perhaps a small criticism of yours, but I'm pretty sure I remember reading that infantries can/ did march about 20 miles per day. On horseback, a cavalry group might go 40 miles per day. In three weeks -- with no days off and no horses going lame-- the group could go 800 miles, which without looking it up, is the size of big European countries, I think.

message 861: by Phrynne (new)

Phrynne I just finished Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff. I thought it was very good!

message 869: by Byl (last edited Nov 15, 2015 01:35PM) (new)

Byl (byls) | 17 comments Just finished Mars Crossing by Geoffrey A. Landis. Pretty dreadful mostly because there are few characters to really like in the book and hardly anyone to actually root for. Standard hard SF that you would expect from Landis but for once this just didn't resonate with me.

On to one of the November books, Brandon Sanderson's Elantris. This is my first Sanderson book ever (you should see my to read pile). I could tell I was in for a better ride before I had read 50 pages. The Landis was a very great disappointment.

message 870: by Don (new)

Don Dunham what did you think about Seveneves? Madprofessah

message 871: by Neal (new)

Neal (infinispace) Just finished House of Suns. Great grand scale space opera from Reynolds.

House of Suns by Alastair Reynolds

Now reading On the Beach by Nevil Shute

On the Beach by Nevil Shute

message 872: by Don (new)

Don Dunham is reading "The Generals" by Winston Groom. it is awesome. George Patton was a dyslexic, hero, maniac. Douglas McArthur, the smartest man in the room but was egocentric and convinced they were all out to get him specifically. George Marshall, ambitious, brilliant and by far the least crazy of the three. great book so far.

Also reading, "The Many Colored Land" by Julian May. rereading after decades. it is a good'un in the ilk.

message 873: by Roberta (new)

Roberta (tawnyreader) | 89 comments I finished The Book of Lights by Chaim Potok. My review:https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

Now I'm reading some short stories by PK Dick.

message 874: by Julia (last edited Nov 19, 2015 04:53PM) (new)

Julia | 957 comments I'm reading and really enjoying Lair of Dreams by Libba Bray. It's the second in a series, of two so far, there will be four; The Diviners comes first, about young people in Manhattan in 1927 who can do different kinds of magic: holding an object and knowing about the person, some travel in others' dreams, one can heal, and more. Most keep these abilities quiet, but one has a major radio show.

message 875: by d (new)

d (d_library) I'm reading In The Afterlight which is the last book of The Darkest Minds series. I absolutely love this series! I don't want to ever finish it c:

message 876: by Roberta (new)

Roberta (tawnyreader) | 89 comments I'm re-reading short stories of PK Dick, and am just beginning (again, after many years, and because it seems appropriate now), It Can't Happen Here by Sinclair Lewis.

message 877: by Don (new)

Don Dunham Thank you Julia ! "The diviners" are gobbled up as a "viable".

message 878: by Don (new)

Don Dunham Just finished a good dark fantasy novel "Low Town" by Daniel Polansky. If you enjoyed "The first law" trilogy you like will enjoy "Low town ".

message 881: by Whitney (new)

Whitney (whitneychakara) | 115 comments I started The Eye of the World last night, again. maybe ill get through it this time.

message 883: by Don (new)

Don Dunham I'm guessing that you mean "the blade itself " Gav451. "Red country" goes pretty well as dessert.

message 884: by Don (new)

Don Dunham why do they have all the cargo??

message 885: by Phrynne (new)

Phrynne Just starting The War of the Worlds because for some peculiar reason I have never read it before!

message 886: by Gav451 (new)

Gav451 | 145 comments I did mean the blade itself, but I am old and oft mix up titles of books and the series.

I will edit that last post so this one looks like the ramblings of a crazy man.

message 887: by Phrynne (new)

Phrynne Finished The War of the Worlds and really enjoyed it. Clever ending.

Now I recall that as an amazing series. A very short first book to get your interest then a load of bigger ones with more twists and turns than you can shake a stick at.

I fancy reading that again to be honest.

Just finished Elantris but I am not feeling up to Red Rising so I am moving on (or backward as the case may be) to The Three-Body Problem. That should last me through the holiday at least.

Fabi NEEDS Email Notifications | 53 comments I recently read Illuminaeand think its hands down the best book I've read in forever. It has overtones of A Space Odyssey and even a direct reference to it. But its much more action packed with gut wrenching reveals. The format must be experienced. Best in hardcover.

message 893: by Monica (last edited Nov 28, 2015 08:53AM) (new)

Monica (monicae) | 512 comments I just finished Mockingbird by Walter Tevis. As a science fiction novel, I found it mediocre; but if you consider a broader concept, it's actually quite good. If you consider that Tevis was writing about depression; the novel becomes fascinating.

Glad to hear its good from a trustworthy source. It's hard to trust those like 4 big book youtubers as they tend to seem a lil biased towards books they are getting some type of kick back/ monetary gain from.
This book looked intriguing though and to see you rave about it I think I'll pick it up.

Thanks.

message 895: by Sumant (new)

Sumant Here is my review of gap cycle, book-1.

message 896: by Julia (new)

Julia | 957 comments I just put aside The Killing Moon by N.K. Jemisin as not for me, this week. I've picked up Redemption in Indigo by Karen Lord.

message 897: by Phrynne (new)

Phrynne I just started Shadows of Self by Brandon Sanderson. Really good so far.

message 898: by MadProfessah (last edited Nov 28, 2015 05:55PM) (new)

MadProfessah (madprofesssah) | 775 comments I"m reading the LAST POLICEMAN trilogy ( The Last Policeman, Countdown City and World of Trouble) by Ben Winters which are police procedurals set in a dystopian (barely) pre-apocalyptic world where an asteroid is a few months out from exterminating humanity.

Really liking this, especially after feeling a bit burnt out on sci-fi after barely finishing Lagoon earlier in the week.

message 899: by Tawallah (new)

Tawallah | 60 comments Finished Elantris and The Martian Chronicles this week. Next up on the sci-fi/fantasy front : Old Man's War. Trying to marathon read my last 4 books for the challenge.

message 900: by Maarit (new)

Maarit | 136 comments I started to read Viimeinen yksisarvinen (The Last Unicorn) by Peter S. Beagle. I'm not a fan of books about horses, be they mythical or not, so I'm interested to see whether or not I'll like this one at all.
