Trigger Warning this book includes fetishization and murder. Imagine living with an unrevealed killer that murdered your only daughter. In the book “The Evil Within: Murdered by Her Stepbrother – the Crime That Shocked a Nation. The Heartbreaking Story of Becky Watts by Her Father” (Darren Galsworthy), he recites the moments before and after the death of his only daughter Becky in his true-crime non-fiction novel. Becky was a kind hearted young kid, who was sadly stabbed to death at age sixteen in 2017. This is a well-known story in the UK because of the media coverage. It gained national recognition and soon hashtags about Becky started forming. Galsworthy depicts the story as if we are already aware of the situation. Immediately when you read the first paragraph of the book; you are hit with a news article addressing Becky's disappearance. He also explains his childhood and the circumstances of his family now. He has two biological kids ( Becky and Danny) and one stepson named Nathan. Even though Darren's childhood was rocky, he tried to make his kids' childhood remarkable. He was determined to be the best father figure and have a normal perfect family. Unfortunately, his stepson Nathan had other plans. Nathan has a fetishization for young girls and he wasn't going to stop until he got what he wanted. Throughout the book my heart was remorseful for Becky and her family. She overcame an eating disorder while not having friends. Her own step brother would tell her not to eat and purposely make her life difficult. I find that heartbreaking to read because in the book you can sense that Darren is unaware of what was going on under his own roof. Becky's first word she ever said was Nathan but Darren doesn't know why. It's also questioned if he had ever sexual assaulted Becky prior to her death. The murder was premeditated so what caused him to kill her? Was it because of his deep fetishization for Becky or was he trying to cover something else up? No one knows but him and his 17 year old girlfriend Shauna. The book does an amazing job of illustrating Darren's family life. I enjoyed seeing things from the perspective of the victims' families. They pick up on things that the victim doesn't acknowledge. Galsworthy is truly skillful at writing true crime. While I was reading, it sometimes felt like I was present in the room. He depicts Becky's timeline so well. He does a fantastic job of connecting the pieces even if he still doesn't know the full story. The description and details made me reread to draw some conclusions about information that was left out. I would highly recommend this book if you enjoy shows like 20/20 on ABC.
