Hunger of the Gods Buddy Read - May 1, 2022

Hi everyone. If anyone is interested, a few of us are going to be reading John Gwynne's second book in the Bloodsworn series, starting this Sunday. All are welcome to join!😊

So excited to be starting this today!😊

I’ve started but only about 30 pages in so far. Even with that terrific synopsis, I’m struggling to remember everything that happened in the first book. There was so much!

Yes, there was a lot, I agree. I loved having that synopsis! And I'm 150 pages in and loving it already!😊👍

I’m absolutely loving this one so far!
I got to the beginning of chapter 9 earlier and I was glued to chapter 8(view spoiler)[when Ulfrir was brought back to life. (hide spoiler)]
Things are going to get crazy in battles, I can just feel it. 🤣😂

I must say I'm struggling a bit with Elvar's arc. And especially in chapter 28, when it comes to a head. (view spoiler)[I don’t know, but I just feel it's too soon for her being leader of the Battle Grim. I mean in the first book she was such a 'new' member, and yes, she was doing good things and slowly moving up, but this just seems to quick of a turnaround. We'll see how it plays out, though. I just got through ch28 also. My thought is (view spoiler)[ that life in amongst the Battle Grim, or the Bloodsworn for that matter, has to be measured in such a short time frame considering how dangerous it is, and somebody with cunning is going to be a natural fit. I'm ok with how it's all gone down, although I definitely can see your point. (hide spoiler)]

Just up to ch36 now. On Elvar, (view spoiler)[ I think JG is purposely making Elvar too tough on the gods and others in thrall collars. I think she's supposed to learn from this that it is wrong to be that way, and she's going to make a change. I'm hopeful at least. It seemed that way after she spoke with Uspa in the last chapter I read. (hide spoiler)]

Yeah, I get what you're saying about Elvar. (view spoiler)[ I think I'm mainly struggling with her being the youngest of the Battle Grim and becoming the leader so quick (what, she's around 18, I think). Now granted, JG does like his young leaders as we all saw with Corban in the FatF series.😉 But I think it's just been the pacing on this particular arc with Elvar that has made it difficult to believe. However, it doesn't change how I feel about the whole story. I do like her character, though, and I agree... I'm hoping she sees the error of her ways too, cause I'm not liking how she is handling the others right now. (hide spoiler)]

I'm excited to get there! Have about the last 130 pages or so to go. I'm a little perturbed because I read one of the spoiler comments over on the FBR thread before they got hidden 😫

You guys are killing it with reading these days. I’m so slow that it’s killing me.
I’m at least 1/2 through now and I have no idea how this world will resolve itself. (view spoiler)[Thralls and the masters that own them is such a hard thing to read, especially when Varg was walking by the slave/thrall market. (hide spoiler)]

Yeah, I see both sides to her and how you are both thinking about her character. It will be interesting to see how much (view spoiler)[she will step up to the plate as the new leader.
Her story is interesting and in chapter 34 when she’s thinking back to her Dad beating her Mom, I felt for her and Grend so much to be put in that position. BS! (hide spoiler)]

Yeah, I get it that accidents happen (with spoilers), but yet at the same time I feel like there's no excuse because that's what the preview button is for.😏 I always preview my posts to make sure the spoiler tags work.

And as far as Elvar goes, I loved how her story ended in the book! But I do hope by the end of the last book in the series that she sees the error of her ways in regards to thralling people.

I agree, Vickie. I double check those spoilers a couple of times when I post something as big as what was posted. I really don't want to be the one who ruins someone else's reading fun.

Oh well, glad you missed seeing it, Ginger. And no matter which way it goes, I really like Elvar's character. She's interesting, and I feel like she could be a real-life person struggling through this stuff.

Yeah, I'm the same. If I am talking about something "spoilery", I double check every code to make sure it's working before I leave that group page. I don't want to ruin someone's fun as well!

Awesome Sally! I’m sure the third book won’t be out for at least a year so hopefully you’ll be caught up with books 1 & 2 by then.
