At first I thought of The Pride of the Peacock written by Victoria Holt. She has in some of her books put both hidden rooms and concealed spyholes into her plots.

No problem. It was one I read decades ago. And as I mentioned. I've also read other Victoria Holt's books as well.

Family moves from UK to Australia. During the journey by ship, female member (I think she was the family’s servant) gets assaulted by a man.
Once in Australia, the house is large and strange. The young woman (heroine) notices there is a window but can’t find the room on the inside. One day she discovers that the room was actually sealed off with bricks.
At some point she finds a diary written by another woman. She is reading the entries, and they describe abuse and hint on murders.
One scene has been stuck in my head ever since reading the book. While in the room during the night reading the diary, or perhaps just narrating the book (I don’t remember which) it is said: “I hear footsteps. Someone is coming”.
Perhaps I mixed up two books and family didn’t move to Australia but I do remember that there was a diary and a walled off room.
Story is probably happening during late 19th, early 20th century.
