Melissa | 1896 comments Okay, I might be whining a bit....

Stymphalian Birds

Stymphalian Birds have been seen filling your orchards and causing delays in harvesting. They are hard to defeat because of their numbers. Music can soothe the savage beasts, may want to try metal bands.

To vanquish this monster you must:
1.) Read a book between 350 and 450 pages (inclusive).
2.) Read a book that is #6 in a series.
3.) Read a book with a musical instrument mentioned in the text.
4.) Read a book with something metal on the cover.
5.) Read a book that features a bird (bird shifter accepted).

Melissa | 1896 comments Aha! We have a couple of these banked! Whoot Whoot!

Melissa | 1896 comments Teresa, just let us know what musical instrument they played in The Skinny on Djinni

That book was already used on T79....

But the book I'm currently reading fits page number and metal on cover. Not sure yet on instrument.

message 955: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1896 comments Riiiiight… I’ll make a note of that! I’m reading H is for Hawk for the bird task.

If no one else wants to claim anything, then yes put me down for it.

Heather Milne | 479 comments I have just finished Bone China so another monster is done, Stymphalian Birds.

message 958: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1896 comments Excellent.
Birds are gone!
But the mothers are baaaaccckkkk....

Echidna

Echidna aka the Mother of Monsters has been spotted on your lands. Hard to kill and looking for some quality "me time".

To vanquish this monster you must:
1.) Read a book between 350 and 450 pages (inclusive).
2.) Read a book with CAVE in text.
3.) Read a book where a character uses a sword.
4.) Author name (first and last) contain all the letters in HERA
5.) Read a book where a MC is a mother

message 959: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1896 comments Maybe we can find a mother with a sword? I feel like all the mothers I read about are dying of something. We need a bold mother!

message 960: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 12995 comments If you have any Terry Pratchett fans in your group, Lords and Ladies covers all of those tasks (if you have the right edition). you're welcome ;)

message 961: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1896 comments Awesome! Thanks!

message 962: by Teresa (new)

Teresa (teresab78) | 1658 comments I have all but mother covered and will be done the book this morning.

message 963: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1896 comments Sweet!

message 964: by Heather (new)

Heather Milne | 479 comments I could cover the mother maybe, in the evening & the morning Ragna is mother to four boys by the end. I wasn't sure if this counted as she was not a mother at the start.

message 965: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Looks like "set in Asia Minor" T162 is still open. I can probably cover that. There's a mystery series I like set in Italy.

message 966: by Teresa (new)

Teresa (teresab78) | 1658 comments I finished my book - It looks like the Echidna is dead!!

message 967: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I'm having ADHD issues with sticking to books again. I'm trying to add the books I've started to the spreadsheet. Usually when I do that, I start to finish some.

Sounds good. I was trying to find a mystery series with a mother as a sleuth. I'm glad Heather took that one, because I couldn't find one! I would still like to try one, if anyone knows of a mother sleuth :) Cozy mysteries are just fine, but others are good too.

I loved these books. I was completely absorbed in her life, and I still think about them! They are harsh though.

Melissa | 1896 comments Someone new!
Kraken

The Kraken has been seen in the sea depths near you land, destroying ships on a whim. If defeated, you will always wonder how you managed to survive. May be searching for Andromeda or Pegasus, he's a bit bitter they got away.

To vanquish this monster you must:
1.) Read a book 800 pages or longer.
2.) Read a book with a ship on the cover (spaceship allowed because Mods can be benevolent too).
3.) Read a book where the Author name (first or last) starts and ends with the same letter (e.g., Andromeda)
4.) Read a book where a character goes swimming
5.) Read a book that has an 8 in the series number (e.g., #8, #18, #0.8)

message 971: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I have an 800+ pager going but I'll leave that blank for now.

Most likely my Italy book will work for swimming as that's the main hobby of the MC. If we need to move books around.

message 972: by Mary X (last edited Jul 11, 2022 10:25AM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments The Lucy Stone books by Leslie Meier have a MC that is a mother. Also the Goldy Bear books by Dianne Mott Davidson. They're cozy type mysteries.

Today I am trying to finish Ariadne so I can answer questions. I'll see if it works for any open monster tasks. Looks like I forgot to add it to the spreadsheet.

message 973: by Stacey (new)

Stacey (boydsmom) | 1377 comments I keep looking, but as soon as I find a book that fits a task, another one gets finished for it. :P What do we need now the most -- a book 6 or 8, a boat on the cover and a lion goat or snake? Or is someone reading for all of those??

message 974: by Teresa (new)

Teresa (teresab78) | 1658 comments Close Protection - 800+ pg also has swimming

message 975: by Teresa (new)

Teresa (teresab78) | 1658 comments My next book (after my egypt book) has a lion shifter - would that work?

message 976: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1896 comments Lion shifter works!

message 977: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1896 comments I bet a book 6 or 8. I haven’t heard anyone covering them.

Briana (bookishmi) | 181 comments Melissa wrote: "I bet a book 6 or 8. I haven’t heard anyone covering them."

I have a book 8 if you have a book 6.

Also in general I DNFd The Rage of Dragons. I was enjoying it while I was reading it but once I'd put it down it was a struggle to pick it back up. I'm thinking right now just isn't the time to read it. I've removed it from the SS. Sorry everyone.

message 979: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1896 comments I could cover the 8 of Agatha Raisin!

message 980: by Melissa (new)

I'll try to get Janet Evonovich 6th out of the library.

No worries.
I'll check out those pages.
I'm working through H is for Hawk and Princess now - but I should be able to finish those up tomorrow.

message 983: by Melissa (new)

message 984: by Melissa (new)

Sorry i didn't give you feedback sooner... for some reason i didn't get a notification about that thread.

As the end is so close, we might as well use Close Protection for the Kraken as I'm already done. I've added it to the sheet and it is vanquished!!

Sounds good.
I'm listening for an instrument in H is for Hawk just in case we need the stand for more than 800 pages.

Melissa | 1896 comments Here is our next beast!

Manticore

The man-eating Manticore has been terrorizing your people. Very hard to kill with 3 rows of sharp teeth that completely devour their victims. Not even the bones left to bury. If you find them, it's best to turn them into a nice 'Persian" rug before they decide to eat you first.

To vanquish this monster you must:
1.) Read a book between 500 and 650 pages (inclusive).
2.) Read a book set in Persia (Iran, Egypt, Turkey, Afghanistan and Pakistan).
3.) Read a book with the letters MAN EATER in title (any order).
4.) Read a book with MPG Paranormal > Shapeshifters.
5.) Read a book with a 3 in the publication date.

message 990: by Mary X (last edited Jul 12, 2022 05:52AM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Well duh. Ariadne is set in Greece. I'll swap my Italy book out for it since it's finished.

Ariadne also has Lions, goats and snakes. So we could call Chimera done and move to Shackles that Hold Us to Task 184: Paranormal/Shapeshifters.

message 991: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1896 comments Is she the one that is set to sail away in a boat? I’m just trying to remember my mythology:)

message 992: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments She does sail away in a boat. There's multiple boat rides in the story.

But we don't seem to need that at the moment. If we want to save it case we get one more boat task, I don't mind. The Italy book is a quick read.

I have a book that will work for boat that I will be reading very soon so we'd have it if it comes up, so go ahead and switch to Ariadne if you want :D

The sooner we complete what we have the better as the challenge is over soon.

I made the switch if you want to fill in the qualification for lion/goat/snake

message 994: by Teresa (new)

Teresa (teresab78) | 1658 comments If anyone reads MM, Beyond the Ruby River is a quick read set in ancient Egypt. It is listed as 3rd in series but can easily be read as a standalone.

message 995: by Stacey (new)

Stacey (boydsmom) | 1377 comments I just borrowed The Curse of the Pharaohs -- I should be able to finish it by tomorrow if no one gets Persia book done before then.

message 996: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1896 comments Fabulous! I will dispose of the monster!!

message 997: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1896 comments Here's our next dude

Centaur

The Centaurs have over run the forests on your lands and are taking no prisoners (sorry Prometheus). In a new category of moderately hard to defeat, they shouldn't be underestimated. In fact, in most realms they are known for their intelligence, so plan your attack well.

To vanquish this monster you must:
1.) Read a book between 300 and 349 pages (inclusive).
2.) Read a book with a forest on the cover.
3.) Read a book where a character is an archer.
4.) Read a book with MPG Classics.
5.) Read a book where a character is considered wise.

message 998: by Teresa (new)

Teresa (teresab78) | 1658 comments Deke fits the page length but not anything else...

to bad we didn't get a griffin - it fits three of that monster's tasks.

message 999: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1896 comments I have an old classics one that hasn't been used yet - Brave New World. We could piece it together.

message 1000: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1896 comments I'm assuming Maddy's Archer's Aim has an archer? I wonder if he is a wise guy too?
