Stranger Things definitely took a big step to the dark this season!

Mary, I'm a little jealous of your board game nights. There are so many out there that look fun, but I don't have many friends who want to play.

That leaves 500-650 pgs and rock on cover"

Nice!
Found a bird book. Will look for rocks

Which one is the body guard one again?

message 854: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1896 comments Okay jumping around the Agatha Raisin books, I found a rock. I should go through ones we haven’t used yet too for those covers.

message 855: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 2567 comments I took the 500-650 page book for monster Argus with my 512 page book, which I finished today.

message 856: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments The Princess Trap

I can move it to that spot. I won't be offended if it's removed.

message 857: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Yes I am very lucky to know a lot of people who like to play games. Sunday night we played Death by Trivia, 5 Seconds and Cards Against Humanity.

message 858: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments There's already a finished book in the bodyguard/protection task. So that's covered.

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1818 comments Melissa wrote: "Keely wrote: "I am reading Moby Dick (on my phone so I can't link) and it will cover task 1, 2 (the sea) and maybe 3. It seems like the sort of book where someone/something is sacrificed by the end..."

Sorry, I meant I was commenting on my phone. I'm reading Moby Dick as an audiobook. I do occasionally read things on my phone via the Kindle app if I'm out and end up having to wait somewhere, but I have an Ipad that I use for ebooks.

message 860: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1818 comments Oh no! I just checked the page count for Moby-Dick or, the Whale and it is 654 pages! I was sure it was in the limit when I started it. We won't be able to use for the first task in Scylla but could still use it for a body of water. I don't think I will finish it today, but hopefully will tomorrow.

message 861: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 2567 comments Oh no, Keely, just 4 pages over! That is a bummer. Hopefully we can still use it for another big page book. Moby Dick is quite an accomplishment. I think I've attempted to read it 2 or 3 times, but never finished it.

message 862: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1896 comments I looked through our spreadsheet and found a bunch of folks standing on a rock from Laurie! Slaying that monster now.

message 863: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I'm starting this for BOM and it has body of water on the cover.

Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid

message 864: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1896 comments Excellent! I never looked at the cover closely. I always thought they were flying...

message 865: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1896 comments I just found one from Mary Jo - The Cornish Coast Murder - I'll put that one in for this monster and slay it, then save Malibu for later :)

message 866: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1896 comments Whoops. Nevermind!
I'll bank hers. Looks like we've got a bit to go on that beast.

message 867: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1896 comments Next up!
Python

Python has been seen on your lands, searching for Apollo and Artemis. He's not that hard to kill as Greek monsters go being just a really big snake, may be interested in ladies with buns. Be warned though, his death may require a penance be paid to satisfy Zeus.

To vanquish this monster you must:
1.) Read a book between 100 and 125 pages (inclusive).
2.) Read a book that features twins.
3. Read a book whose author name (first or last) starts with a letter in SWORD.
4.) Read a book where a character is pregnant.
5.) Read a book that mentions some type of championship games (World Cup, Olympics, World Series, etc).

Too bad you can't use the kindle edition - It has 549 pgs

message 869: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1896 comments I think Nanci has a book for this one!

message 870: by Teresa (new)

Teresa (teresab78) | 1658 comments The only one I have is author name.

message 871: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1896 comments I have one that has an Olympic swimmer, but I don't think it mentions Olympics. I wonder if that would work?

message 872: by Teresa (last edited Jul 05, 2022 01:08PM) (new)

Teresa (teresab78) | 1658 comments Maddy has read one with twins (Black and White) and a the BOM Cold Cases which she says has a pregnancy

message 873: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I have no problem with mine being banked. It works for a couple in the new monster. Not sure about championship games yet. But definitely task 3.

Teresa (teresab78) | 1658 comments Mary C wrote: "I have no problem with mine being banked. It works for a couple in the new monster. Not sure about championship games yet. But definitely task 3."

If yours works for more than one task, we should use it. If we get to a point where we have books completed to fit all the other tasks and you're not done, we can always sub out :D

message 875: by Stacey (new)

Stacey (boydsmom) | 1377 comments I have one with twins and the Stanley Cup. But it's also the 590 pager so not sure which would be better or even what we need. Should finish tomorrow.

message 876: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 2567 comments Melissa wrote: "I think Nanci has a book for this one!"

Thanks, Melissa, I do, but since Maddy has one that works for two of the tasks, let's use hers. We'll get around to mine at some point.

message 877: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments So, I picked the wrong BOM the start first. But since there isn't a pressing deadline for answering questions, I'll finish Malibu Rising first.

It does work for "championship games" because a couple of the main characters are US Surfing Championship surfers. I think that one might be harder to find than body of water on cover but I'm good wherever you decide to put the book.

If anyone else plans to read it, than we can use one for each monster it works for.

message 878: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 2567 comments I finished reading Malibu Rising on May 29. This challenge started May 15. Is May 29 too early to count for BOM for this challenge? I'm sure it's too early to use as a reread, but hoping maybe it will work for the BOM.

Having read the book already, Mary, I can say for sure that it works for "championship games". Hope you enjoy it!

Also maybe as soon as tomorrow, I will start reading a book with a pool on the cover, which will work for "body of water" The Swimmers by Julie Otsuka

Me and my page counts again
His Reluctant Omega Mate (Sweetwater Pack Book 1) by Jax Stuart
414 pages - https://www.amazon.com/Reluctant-Omeg...

message 881: by Stacey (new)

Stacey (boydsmom) | 1377 comments I've finished Taking Shots. It works for these options:

1. Character described as hard headed. Finishes Minotaur with Mary Cs long book.
OR
2. Between 500-650 pages for Scylla
OR
3. Championship games for Python

Use it where you will! :)

Melissa | 1896 comments I've got a short ghost book I can read tonight, and then not sleep, and try to finish another :)

message 890: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1896 comments Oooh. Check out this beast

Manticore

The man-eating Manticore has been terrorizing your people. Very hard to kill with 3 rows of sharp teeth that completely devour their victims. Not even the bones left to bury. If you find them, it's best to turn them into a nice 'Persian" rug before they decide to eat you first.

To vanquish this monster you must:
1.) Read a book between 500 and 650 pages (inclusive).
2.) Read a book set in Persia (Iran, Egypt, Turkey, Afghanistan and Pakistan).
3.) Read a book with the letters MAN EATER in title (any order).
4.) Read a book with MPG Paranormal > Shapeshifters.
5.) Read a book with a 3 in the publication date.

message 891: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 2567 comments Whoa! Manticore is a monster that this team will roll up into a Persian rug in no time!

Melissa, I see that you read The Swimmers also and read your review. Totally different than what I was expecting by looking at the cover. Now I really want to get it read!

As for Malibu, I listened to it and found it very entertaining. I felt so bad for the mom, but at the same time I was very frustrated with her that she kept going back to him. I thought all the characters were done very well and could well imagine the constant upheaval and turmoil for the children growing up.
My short review if interested: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/5...

I'll ask my question about the BOM in the captain's thread!

message 892: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1896 comments I like the image of rolling him up in a Persian rug :)
I’m finishing Death on the Nile today. It can count for boat, or book set in Egypt.

message 893: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I finished Malibu Rising. I'll let someone else move it to the mini-monster sheet based on what else gets read.

Also works for pregnant character although that's not really needed at the moment.

message 894: by Mary X (last edited Jul 07, 2022 05:51AM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I liked Malibu Rising a lot. I didn't care for Daisy Jones & the Six so I suspected that I might not like this one. But I did.

It's a little depressing to see that books set primarily when I was a teenager are being tagged as "historical". The 80's don't seem that long ago to me.

Thanks Mary! I was dreading Malibu Rising a bit as I couldn't get through Daisy Jones and the Six. This makes me feel better. :)

I moved it into the Championship task for Python -

Python is now dead!!

message 897: by Keli (new)

Keli | 1325 comments Hmmm, I loved Daisy Jones and the Six, so I wonder if I'll like Malibu Rising, as a few of you didn't like 6 but liked this.🤔

Keli | 1325 comments I finished Master and Margarita just in time. Hopefully i can get in The Witch's Heart before the 16th.

Melissa | 1896 comments Here we go!!
Doesn't look too terrible!

Echidna

Echidna aka the Mother of Monsters has been spotted on your lands. Hard to kill and looking for some quality "me time".

To vanquish this monster you must:
1.) Read a book between 350 and 450 pages (inclusive).
2.) Read a book with CAVE in text.
3.) Read a book where a character uses a sword.
4.) Author name (first and last) contain all the letters in HERA
5.) Read a book where a MC is a mother
