Melissa | 1896 comments An oldie, but a goodie:

Sirens

The Sirens have been spotted on your shores endangering ships heading for the harbor. Easy enough to defeat if you know how, don't recommend calling them one hit wonders though.

To vanquish this monster you must:
1.) Read a book between 100 and 125 pages (inclusive).
2.) Read a book that takes place on a boat or ship.
3.) Read a book with a character who is deaf (any degree acceptable)
4.) Read a book with a rope on the cover.
5.) Read a book with "Mermaid" in the text.

Melissa | 1896 comments And a new one!
Cretan Bull

The Cretan Bull has been spotted running amok across your lands destroying defensive walls and crops alike. He is hard to defeat and really should of been sacrificed as the gods intended. Also, not opposed to participating in some marriage infidelity. So there may be some surprises popping out 9 months from now.

To vanquish this monster you must:
1.) Read a book between 350 and 450 pages (inclusive).
2.) Read a book with a white cover.
3.) Read a book where something physical is destroyed (e.g., building burning down and not a relationship being ruined).
4.) Read a book where the MC ignores important advice.
5.) Read a book with a 7 in the page count.

I don’t recall even seeing this one in the list!

Melissa | 1896 comments I know it! I guess they've retired some (no more sheep!) and added others! This one looks pretty cool :)

message 755: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1896 comments White cover though. I don't know if I've ever read a book with a white cover! Interesting.

Maddy | 2127 comments Safe and sound, read 6/18, Mc deaf

Excellent. Just put it on there.

Stacey (boydsmom) | 1377 comments Melissa, I actually have Cut & Run (Cut & Run, #1) by Madeleine Urban checked out from the library to read for another challenge if you want me to take the white cover? It also works for the page count and 7 in page count tasks as well.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I finished To Sleep if an 800 page book is still helpful anywhere

message 763: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1819 comments I couldn't sleep so I have finished Paradise Lost which is one book completed for us on the warships.
The book was on my TBR since 2012... I can say it was not worth the wait.

It looks like Elen filled in for Wilder Girls - so let's bank it and hope for another bull :)
Carrie fisher had an interesting life! I'm really working on not saying "but she's Princess Leia!"

message 767: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1896 comments Maddy, I'm going to use Haunted for the page count for the Sirens, unless you were thinking of it for anything else?

message 768: by Maddy (new)

Maddy | 2127 comments Melissa wrote: "Maddy, I'm going to use Haunted for the page count for the Sirens, unless you were thinking of it for anything else?"

Not really? I just noted what it would fit most in case we ever get such low page count again.

message 769: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1896 comments We have some really nice books banked.
Any of those characters take a boat ride somewhere?

I'm reading it too, but I'm quite enjoying it. I've just finished day 3 questions, and will now just plow on until i finish the book.
What do you not like about the book?

message 771: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1896 comments Or any characters ignore important advice?

message 772: by Keli (new)

Keli | 1325 comments So do I not have to finish that shepherdess book?

message 773: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1896 comments Mary C wrote: "I finished To Sleep if an 800 page book is still helpful anywhere"

Nice. We'll bank it for sure.

Did it help you fall asleep ? :)

message 775: by Maddy (new)

Maddy | 2127 comments Melissa wrote: "Or any characters ignore important advice?"

The book of cold cases? Mc ignores advice not to go the Beth's house alone and gets injured?

message 776: by Maddy (new)

Maddy | 2127 comments Or maybe better Now Entering Addamsville, because the cold cases fits a lot of other tasks. MC ignores advice to stay out of it by going after the arsonist herself and gets hurt

message 777: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1896 comments Perfect. I'll finish mine today and then we will slay that monster.

message 778: by Maddy (new)

Maddy | 2127 comments I have a cruise ship book I could read if there are no banked books that fit

message 779: by Maddy (new)

Maddy | 2127 comments I have to wait for Decameron btw. Scribd is doing its thing where a week before my next payment, they cut off my access with their "will become available soon" and the date it will become available is unsurprisingly the date of my next payment. I hate it when they do that, but not like I have much of a choice. It says 7/9, so that is when I can start reading it. If anyone has another book that fits those 2 tasks, you can use it instead. If not, then I am sorry, but there will be a bit of a wait until my next payment goes through and scribd stops doing its BS thing

message 780: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1896 comments Sounds good. I’m without a computer until later. I remember that Mary has an 800 pager. We’ll see about the other task.

message 781: by Teresa (new)

Teresa (teresab78) | 1658 comments I have a 800 pager but not a bull/hard-headed one.

message 782: by Maddy (new)

Maddy | 2127 comments Then maybe we can wait?
If Melissa finishes her book and we get the next monster, maybe it it will be more useful for those tasks?

message 783: by Teresa (new)

Teresa (teresab78) | 1658 comments Maddy wrote: "Then maybe we can wait?

I think that may be best unless someone comes up with something to fit that extra task in the meantime :)

message 784: by Maddy (new)

Maddy | 2127 comments That would be nice, but what are the odds :D

message 785: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 2567 comments My book Things We Lost to the Water by Eric Nguyen was never used for a monster, but it won't work for these two new ones. The MC came over on a boat from Vietnam, but the book did not take place on a boat or ship. Maddy, I say go for it!

message 786: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 2567 comments Is there a timeline to use a book like mine mentioned above for a monster? I thought it had to be read after we got the monster. Is there a specific place for "banked" books on the SS. I don't see it, but if there is I'll move my book there. I might forget about it, if it's just listed with all the gazillion books we have read!

There is no timeline other than it had to finish after June 15. If you put it on the spreadsheet and list any tasks it works with in the "also works for" column then as the new monsters come up we can go back and see what fits!

This is a list of all monsters and tasks

Melissa | 1896 comments Here we go, kids!
Stymphalian Birds

Stymphalian Birds have been seen filling your orchards and causing delays in harvesting. They are hard to defeat because of their numbers. Music can soothe the savage beasts, may want to try metal bands.

To vanquish this monster you must:
1.) Read a book between 350 and 450 pages (inclusive).
2.) Read a book that is #6 in a series.
3.) Read a book with a musical instrument mentioned in the text.
4.) Read a book with something metal on the cover.
5.) Read a book that features a bird (bird shifter accepted).

message 792: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1896 comments Python

Python has been seen on your lands, searching for Apollo and Artemis. He's not that hard to kill as Greek monsters go being just a really big snake, may be interested in ladies with buns. Be warned though, his death may require a penance be paid to satisfy Zeus.

To vanquish this monster you must:
1.) Read a book between 100 and 125 pages (inclusive).
2.) Read a book that features twins.
3. Read a book whose author name (first or last) starts with a letter in SWORD.
4.) Read a book where a character is pregnant.
5.) Read a book that mentions some type of championship games (World Cup, Olympics, World Series, etc).

message 793: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1819 comments The Book of Cold Cases works for 1 and 4 for the birds one and 3 and 4 of the Python. Both Kit and I have finished it and neither looks to have been used for a monster yet.

message 794: by Teresa (new)

Teresa (teresab78) | 1658 comments I have a book for task 2 of Python and one for 5 but that one is over 800 pgs so we may want to wait on that.

message 795: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1896 comments Keely wrote: "The Book of Cold Cases works for 1 and 4 for the birds one and 3 and 4 of the Python. Both Kit and I have finished it and neither looks to have been used for a monster yet."

Nice. I used one for the birds, and I see you have one for the python. Excellent.

message 796: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1896 comments I just found Wimbledon in the book I'm reading, so that will count for Python also. Now we just need one of those short books :)

message 797: by Melissa (last edited Jul 04, 2022 05:53AM) (new)

Melissa | 1896 comments I'm going to substitute Elen's A Darkling Plan for Kit's Rage of Dragons - which we can save for a future task :)
