Laurie B | 928 comments The book I just finished and the one I'll be finishing soon both only work for the "trickery" task. Should I include that on the spreadsheet under mini code? Or just wait and see if they can work for more tasks later?

Sure! It'd be good to get rid of this one eyed beast!

Yup!
It's a wheel that's spun by a captain on a different team.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments It could go either way. Wonderfully interesting or insanely boring.

I have decided to finally read the Goldfinch. Just added it to the spreadsheet that I have enough done to know I'll stick with it this time. I think it'll work for T58. Actually, it also works for T57 because NYC is an island. Not sure if enough of the book is set there yet. Hubby went to bed early tonight so I'm listening while I stitch his Christmas present. Also working from home tomorrow.

message 608: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1896 comments Yeah, I couldn’t get through that one. I’m not sure why though. I really liked one of the characters- Hobie? Something like that? I’ll start The Warmth of Other Suns tonight for the 500-600 page one, unless someone else finishes one first. I’ve been meaning to read it for a while.

Keli | 1325 comments I've added my books Ashes of the Sun to T56, T58 and The Zig-Zag Girls to T57. I've started the Yorkshire shepherd one for T59 & T60. So that polyphemus should be done by tomorrow morning.

I just finished the Haymeadow which fits the last two clues. I hope you don't mind, but I'll snag those spots?

Maybe we can keep your book for a different Polyphemus if we get one?

message 612: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1896 comments I just finished The Haymeadow by Gary Paulsen
That was some weird book, but it covers sheep and farmer.
"Things happen to sheep" is my big takeaway....

We could also use this for the sheep task in the other Polyphemus? I put it there. I hope this is okay :)

I loved the Goldfinch! As I remember it (it's been quite a few years since I read it) there is enough NYC to work as setting. The other setting was Las Vegas, which was the harder part of the book for me, so maybe I'm recalling NY as having most the story since it was the beginning and end that I liked best.

Melissa | 1896 comments A new monster!!

Empusa

Empusa aka the Karen of ancient Greece (view spoiler) has been spotted on your lands causing havoc like a one monster homeowners association from hell. Easy to defeat with the right mindset, try telling her you ARE the manager.

To vanquish this monster you must:
1.) Read a book between 100 and 125 pages (inclusive).
2.) Read a book that takes place in the suburbs.
3.) Read a book with a character who is a bully (your interpretation).
4.) Read a book with sandals on the cover (flip-flops/thongs accepted).
5.) Read a book where the MC owns a cow or dog.

Perfect! And not another polyphemus, phew.

message 619: by Nanci (new)

Had planned to finish it tonight but we ended up going to our lodge and playing board games with friends.

Mary C, if you’ve got a sheep one done, please use it. I don't want to necessarily read a shepherdess book if I don't have to. It is actually more interesting than I thought, but there are so many other books I would like to get to first. I've got it for two weeks, so I can save it for a future polyphemus.

We read My Brilliant Friend for my RL book group. It wasn't something I enjoyed, but everyone else really liked it. It does get a mixed bag of reviews. Hope you enjoy it!

I finished my book, The Day the World Came to Town: 9/11 in Gander, Newfoundland. Adding the read date to monster SS now.

message 632: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 2567 comments Our newest monster!

Charybdis

Charybdis has been spotted close to your shores and endangering ships heading for the harbor. If you manage to defeat this monster be prepared to answer "how are you still alive" every time you tell the story. The monster is interested in helping you reach your childhood dream of finding what's in Davy Jones's Locker.

To vanquish this monster you must:
1.) Read a book 800 pages or longer.
2.) Author's name (first or last) starts with one of the letters in POOL.
3.) Read a book where the MC is forced to make a hard choice (your interpretation).
4.) Read a book with "fig" in the title or text.
5.) Read a book where the characters take a boat trip (of any type)

Stacey (boydsmom) | 1377 comments Good grief. Another doorstopper.... I'm only about 300p. into The Stand -- I was hoping to have more time before it was needed. :) ETA: I've found one that will work for 3 of the tasks above -- I'll check on fig when I get home. We cannot use middle name for the letters in POOL task, correct?

I think if we switch Kit's 500p book with Melissa's we can finish off our other Polyphemus, correct?

We just have to do the little checkbox things and then put it on the master Jason sheet. I usually do that before I cross off the names. I'll do it now!

No it's just author's first and/or last name. That's good that you have 3 of the tasks. I put down a book I'm currently listening to for Task T70 "takes a boat trip". If that's one that your book fits, we can always move mine.

Harpies

Groups of Harpies have been spotted on your lands, ruining outdoor feasts at every opportunity. Easy to defeat with the motivation to chase them far enough away, enjoy the cardio.

To vanquish this monster you must:

No worries! It takes a bit of time, and it's a little tricky with the transfer, but I think that's because this is my first time as a co-captain :)
There's a link in the request a monster page (at the very top) that brings you to a word document. "Monsters information" Then, you copy and paste the format there and presto! The magic happens!

Mine works for those same two tasks also, but not fig or POOL. It doesn't seem to fit anywhere else yet, but let's just say whoever finishes it first takes those two tasks. I'm only at 19%, so it will probably be you. If it is, no worries, I'm sure they'll be another monster somewhere where it will fit. I'll remove it, so it will be set if you finish first. Sound good?
