The killer has serious anger control issues but also has a need to hurt someone. I wasn't initially sure that the killer was a serial but is definitely smart and physically fit.
It seems a crime of a very damaged and unstable person. And emotionally immature. Tessa rejected the murderer and this fueled his intense anger, he mentions a few times he didn't start out meaning to kill her but his emotions took over.
