It works because it throws the reader into the crime right up front. It causes the reader to empathize with the victim and feel his/her desperation. I always feel frustrated, though, because once I start to care about the victim, he/she gets killed, leaving me feeling kind of sad.
You're definitely thrown right into the book. It gives you a bit of the victims perspective as it's happening - kind of creepy.
