If you’ve read the Scarlet Falls series, you may have noticed the author’s pattern of beginning her books with a prologue that details the crime from the victim’s point of view. What about that works/doesn’t work?

Lynn (ftbooklover) It works because it throws the reader into the crime right up front. It causes the reader to empathize with the victim and feel his/her desperation.
I always feel frustrated, though, because once I start to care about the victim, he/she gets killed, leaving me feeling kind of sad.

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 3485 comments I agree. The prologue puts the reader in the crime, and makes the reader ready to solve the crime.

I agree, Sharon. Straight away it puts the reader in the role of pseudo detective, trying to pick up every clue to work out Whodunnit.
