Rhys Winterborne and Tom Severin are friends of Devon but Rhys threatened to make a move on Kathleen and Tom tried to maneuver him into assigning the land mineral rights over to him without disclosing the value. Are they really his friends or just the way of men in this era?

Phrynne | 14 comments I wondered that when I was reading the book. Maybe because of his way of life they assumed he didn't care much about anything and would not take offence whatever they did.

Anita (anitanodiva) | 2953 comments I think Rhys was acting like the lowborn man he thought Kathleen expected and he was hurt by what she had told him. He was basically confirming what she thought of him.

Tom was an ass for trying to cheat Devon out of the true value of his land. Devon needs to seriously rethink this friendship.

Robin (robinmy) | 2450 comments I think both Rhys and Severin were used to the old Devin. He was a guy they knew and partied with, but really weren't true friends. I'm assuming that we'll see changes in both of these men the way we saw in Devin in this book.

You all make very good points here and I’m uncertain as to the truth of the matter. I’m leaning towards Robin’s assessment as they liked Devon but didn’t think he’d care that much, treating it more like the games they always played. I don’t think they realized how invested Devon was in his new title, Kathleen and the cousins. Rhys definitely was lashing out at Kathleen because he felt slighted.

Karen ♐ (kmk1214) | 909 comments I thought that both Severin and Rhys would think that Devin wouldn't really care. They didn't understand that Devin had changed so drastically.

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 3474 comments I agree with you. They are dealing with the old Devin not this man who feels his responsibilities. When Devin left these men in London, he was going to sell off the land and put everyone out on the street. They were giving him the options to do that.
