Devon Ravenel had a reputation of being self centered, aimless and a bit of a rake. Was that your initial impression of him? Were there early signs that there might be more substance in him?

Phrynne | 14 comments I thought there were good signs he had more substance because he was into sport and looking after himself whereas West had completely let himself go.

Anita (anitanodiva) | 2953 comments Yeah, I thought he was self-centered, aimless and a rake. My initial impression was what a waste. Like most gentlemen he suffered from having no purpose in his life.

Robin (robinmy) | 2450 comments He was a rake with absolutely nothing of substance to do. I do have to agree that there was a little more to his life than his brother. Comparing the two, West was much worse off with the drinking and gambling.

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 3474 comments I thought he was a rake, but I also sensed something more profound from the start. He was devoted to West. Many older brothers don't keep their younger siblings so close. It felt like he was playing the role that his station and family put him in.

Devon fit the definition at the time of being rakish but he didn’t have all the traditional characteristics. Yes, he was a “player” but he was also responsible financially, taking it serious.

Like you, Sharon, I admired how he looked out for West. His worry and concern shaped my opinion of Devon.

When he inherited the title, Devon’s first thought was to manage the finances and get rid of the debt. So, he wasn’t truly aimless and irresponsible as most rakes go. I liked him.

Karen ♐ (kmk1214) | 909 comments I liked Devon too. I agree he wasn't the typical rake who is only concerned with himself. He was planning on selling the estate to pay off all the outstanding debts. And I really liked how he looked out for West also.

Christina T (crysteena73) | 109 comments At the beginning I was a little worried at his lackadaisical lifestyle. But as others mentioned his worry about his brother's health and drinking set the tone for his character to be much deeper than it appeared at the beginning.
