KimKirt | 1638 comments I'm caught, I'm snagged, I'm waving the red flag, I'm a cheater . I have books on standby, ones I want to read or have started reading that don't really hold my attention for long. I read those when I have finished a book and can't get to the library to get a new one. I cheated so bad on those two books yesterday (currently two are on standby that I've read maybe 1/4 the way through) because I went to the library and got 4 new books, thinking in my mind that I didn't want to run out of reading material before getting a chance to go to the library again. Last night I cheated devilishly, devouring a new library book as the old faithfuls sat by and watched. And I didn't feel guilty, nope, not one bit! Perhaps I have the "why buy the cow when the milk's free" attitude with my library books. They are only mine for a short time, so I must drink them up first, because the cows I already own will still be there later to drink from. ;-)

Renee | 231 comments Monogamous

In my sister-in-laws (un)tactful, description of me:

It's like only eating one flavor of ice cream your entire life... :O

yea, I know, our family is a bit disturbed (lol). Although she was not speaking of my reading fixation (I'll spare you all the details but your imagination is probably right on target) it is also a very apt description of my reading patern.
Even if I do not like a book, I feel as if I'm cheating myself if I don't see it through to the end.

I will however keep my less than proper reads on my i-phone/kindle where what I am reading remains annonymous while in puplic.

The Romance Reviews (Carole) (The_Romance_Reviews) | 12 comments What a cute question!

Before, I used to be monogamous. Until I discovered I can multi-task very well...

So now, I'm in the middle of
3 ebooks
2 paper books

I'm amazed at myself at being able to get all the details straight.

message 54: by Alexis-Morgan (new)

Alexis-Morgan Roark (alexismroark) | 36 comments I am a total book hussy often reading more than one while listening to more than one. I've started a new book while reading another book (boring or not) if it happened to "strike my fancy."

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) | 5294 comments Apparently my ways they are a'changing. I've been reading one book during the day and another at night. I think it's because the night book doesn't fit in my pocket. Two at once? (Don't tell my wife.)

Macwolf01 [Elise] (macwolf01) | 1012 comments I am a faithful reader, except I will listen to another audio book in the van when I come & go from work. The drive is 30 mins at best and I just can't waste good reading time ;0) The only other time I grab another book is when I forget my book and I have time to read and there's a store or library close. But then I will pick one to finish then work on whichever is left.

message 57: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (vanessamc) | 394 comments I'm somewhere between faithful and book hussy. I finish most of the books I start, but have been known to read several hb/pb and an audio book or a couple audio books at the same time. If a book catches my interest, though, I can read it pretty fast, and so am loyal to that book until the end, while the others sit waiting, wondering when I'm going to return.

Thank goodness I don't have a kindle, or it probably would be worse. I use my mp3 player most of the time for audio books, but if I listen to them while nodding off to sleep, I'll put the CD disc in the player, but usually it's the same book.

message 58: by Kelley (new)

Kelley (shewolf0316) | 0 comments Heck no I'm not monogamous when I'm reading! LOL I have SOO many books going at any given time. I'm reading 7 right now and it'll be 8 soon as I start a new audio at home (I finished my home audio just in time for Lost finale tonight! LOL)

eBook: Play Dead by Meryl Sawyer
print: Small Changes by Sheila Roberts
audio in car: Cemetery Dance by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child
audio on MP3: The Dead Travel Fast by Deanna Raybourne
Bathroom Book 1: The Cinderella Mission by Catherine Mann
Bathroom Book 2: Faerie Tales edited by Martin H Greenburg
Bathroom Book 3: Much Ado about Matchmaking by Myrna Mackenzie
Soon to start audio at home: Fortune's Rocks by Anita Shreve

message 59: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (jackieonl) I read them one at a time. I couldn't keep the storylines straight if I read multiple books.

message 60: by Gigi (new)

Gigi | 1149 comments LOL!! Well, I try not to be monogamous and wind up being monogamous. LOL

I'll try to read more than one book at a time, but a certain book will keep me interested more than another. Happens every time!

Elise-Pinterest+Goodreads=The Perfect Book Boyfriend (eliselovesshinyandnew) | 132 comments I am a one book woman. However, I usually have at least 2 books in the wings, just in case. I have only had one book within the last year that I simply could not finish reading because it was so stupid. Otherwise, even if it's a bad read for me, I stick with it until the end (although it may take me longer to finish)

message 62: by Crystal (new)

Crystal | 170 comments I am so not monogamous. I have a paperbook, ebook (at least one if not more) and also an audiobook going at once. It depends on what I'm doing at the time. Bed time is always good for ebooks because you don't need lights on to read Kindle for iPhone. Audiobooks for car and work so you can do other things while you listen. And paper books for all other times.

message 63: by Rossy (new)

Rossy (naughtybookjunkie) | 2192 comments You know Jim, i think am changing too. I recently found myself starting a book, then putting it aside and starting another one. Now, i figured out that it was mostly because i was not in the mood for the first book at the time. I still cannot read more than one book at the time because once i start the second book i'll hardly remember the details on the first. I end up re-reading whatever book i started and placed on pause anyway.

message 64: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 4477 comments I'm a book hussy. I've been known to pick up 3 or 4 books at a time.

I'm also a picky hussy. If a book is not catching my attention, I dump its ass and find something else I like. :)

Awesomevegan (AKA JenReads) (awesomevegan) | 140 comments I try to read one or two at a time. Usually if I have 2 going it it because 1 is on my Kindle and one is paper. I can bring my Kindle with me in my purse. I also like to read in the bathtub so I tend to bring a paper book in there with me so I don't worry as much about dropping it in the tub or getting a slightly wet hand on it. These tend to be my cheap paperbacks and are often thrift store finds. I don't bring my nice hardcover books in the bathtub. I at most will have 3 books usually and that is ONLY is one I am reading is very large and hardcover so it doesn't go in the bath or the purse and is read at home only. I guess I am polyamorous but I try to be close to monogamous. Sometimes I will only have 1 going on the Kindle. It depends how long that book is and how into it I am an also if it is for a challenge. I try to go one at a time if I am participating in challenges.

message 66: by Kami (new)

Kami (katmiv) I'd love to be monogamous, really I would, however, I have my books separated into two basic categories: One's I can read in public & One's I can not! Sooo...I'll read me a nice mild-mannered respectable book while at work and then when I'm in the privacy of my own home I'll switch to something a little more comfortable. Read: bow chicka wow wow! Solution! I have conceded to buying myself a Kindle for my birthday this year so LOOK OUT!! Reading a "Do not read in public" book IN PUBLIC!!??!! How scandalous!! *waggles eyebrows*

Kidding!!...partially. ;)

message 67: by Robin (new)

Robin Higgins (arsinoe) | 1 comments I'm such a book tart! I love a variety of books. Sometimes when I end up with a series, I can't help myself...I can't stop...I have to continue reading it. It's an obsession. Sometimes I see people reading books and I have to find out the titles... (BIG GRIN) On the other hand, it's always fun talking with people and it's an easy way to meet new friends with the same ahmmmm interests... teehee... You thought I was going to say something else, didn't you? teehee....Seriously though, I do like having lots of choices!

message 68: by Eve (new)

Eve Langlais (evelanglais) I am a monogamous reader and will read it 'til the end no matter how bad it is. But I've been known to throw the really horrible ones when I'm done and going on a rant. Now that I'm doing most of my reading on an e-reader, I've had to substitute the throwing part for kicking and stomping my feet lol. Anyone else get mad when they force themselves to finish a really bad book?

message 69: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments nope - because I don't force myself to finish...too many books and too little time to read something I don't like (unless its a required reading of course!)

message 70: by Eve (new)

Eve Langlais (evelanglais) I wish I could walk away but because I've paid for it I feel obliged to read it. Dumb. It's like this stupid story I'm reading right now on my e-reader. Really not enjoying it and the worst part I have book 2 which again since I paid for will force myself to read wether I like it or not. lol My own form of torture.

message 71: by Tanith (new)

Tanith I'm monogamous til the end. Even if it is a book I'm not enjoying, though it may mean if skim reading just to get through it.

message 72: by SandyC (last edited Jun 07, 2010 08:10AM) (new)

SandyC (sandyc88) | 1287 comments I typically am monogomous, however I have come to the realization that if I am going to actually succeed in the challenges I enter, I need to double up. It helps if I balance the "lighter reads" (i.e. Are You There Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea with the "heavier" ones (i.e. Voyager).

message 73: by Jezi (last edited Jun 09, 2010 02:21PM) (new)

Jezi (wjrockafellow) I too have been changing recently too. Now that I have an e-reader, I find myself reading a paperback and e-book at the same time. I have even been known to throw in a third on my lunch break at work. I guess I'm into menages now :P lol.

message 74: by Stacy (new)

Stacy (stacy1971) I listen to one book in the car and read a book at the same time. If I really don't like a book I don't finish. I figure there is so many books out there to read and so little time!

message 75: by Danielle (new)

Danielle (Smiley1881) LOL this is so funny!
I am completely monogamous I read one book at a time and I must finish any book I start no matter how bad it is. I know I have a problem. Maybe its OCD? :)

message 76: by Ann (new)

Ann Noell (fantasyannie) I am not monogamous at all lol.... some times I'm reading 3 books at once, one at work, one at home and then my favorite author comes out with a new book so what is a girl to do? I almost always finish a book unless it is really awful; if I cannot get into a book in the first chapter then I just put it down, there are to many good books to read. And I must admit I have a very bad habit of reading the ending before I'm half way through, I just can't stop myself lol....

Domino (aka Meme) (bryghtstarr) | 409 comments hello everyone. i'm new to this group and absolutely love to see a discussion on monogamy. totally cool! i'm monogamous, but sometimes wish i could read more than one book. i always have so many books i want to read and just have to knock them out one bite at a time. though, it helps that i'm not a slow reader. usually can read 2 or 3 books a week. just depends on my after work schedule.

message 78: by Adrienne (new)

Adrienne Monogamous but fickle, if I think I've been cheated on I get rid of what was my currrent true love and replace them with another.

Domino (aka Meme) (bryghtstarr) | 409 comments Adrienne wrote: "Monogamous but fickle, if I think I've been cheated on I get rid of what was my currrent true love and replace them with another."

too funny Adrienne. very smart though =)

message 80: by miuccia (new)

miuccia (memiuccia) Haha.

I used to be strictly monogamous, but now, whenever they get boring, I swap them for a new thrill.

Most of the times I get back to them later :D

message 81: by Sharon (new)

Sharon (slthompson) | 180 comments I too was once strictly monogamous, only in the last couple of years I have come to believe that life is too short to read bad books.

message 82: by Heather (new)

Heather Young (heyo4ever) | 37 comments Lady Danielle "The Book Huntress" wrote: "Alathea wrote: "Strictly monogamous. I can't focus on two (or more) books at the same time. I just can't.

Does that make me weird?"

You're not weird at all. I know other people the same way. "

Not weird at all. I'm strictly monogamous however my eye strays and wanders and I have a shelf of ones I've picked up but never touched because I was faithfully making it through til the end of my current book ....all the while knowing I had plenty waiting should I want to stray, but I never do. lol

Awesomevegan (AKA JenReads) (awesomevegan) | 140 comments Adrienne wrote: "Monogamous but fickle, if I think I've been cheated on I get rid of what was my currrent true love and replace them with another."

How do you know that your book has been cheating on you? Do you find it in the hands of another reader? :-P

message 84: by Adrienne (new)

Adrienne LOL if it's not up to my expecetations I feel as though I've been cheated out of a good read, and if that's the case, no hesitations it's dumped a little like a boring lover:)

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) | 5294 comments Adrienne, I'm not sure as though the book is really cheating on you. I understand that you may be demanding in your time between the sheets (of a book). I know that a book can sometime keep building and building. You read expecting a gripping climax but are ultimately left unsatisfied. The book has moved on to the epilogue and just wants to lie there in your hand for a few more pages. But you, you are left hanging high and dry. You thought when you fisrt spied his leather bound spine that he was capable of giving you what you need. There were glimpses there of what it would feel like to be in the grip of a 'real book', but in the end, you slip the unsatisfying hard bound cad back into his jacket and send him on his way.

I can only caution you to try to take things slowly after an unsatisfying episode. You might think exploring your boundaries with other genres is the way to go. While spending 'quality time' with more than one genre is more socially acceptable than it used to be, you will still be looked down upon in certain circles. Just don't lose yourself while looking for Mr. Goodread.

Domino (aka Meme) (bryghtstarr) | 409 comments dang Photojim. that was fabulous! ur analogy and setting was great. are u a writer? spoken like that i'm very glad i'm monogamous. hehe

message 87: by Adrienne (new)

Adrienne Awww Phototjim in search of total satisfaction I sometimes wonder what it would be like to explore the unknown, my eyes glance swiftly over to other genres, I think what would it be like, just a quick flirtation with something else, temptation is all aound me. But I steel myself and look to those I know and love, and understand that true satisfaction is already here. And I don't sleep with more than one book at a time unlike some people I know:)

message 88: by Kim (new)

Kim | 1 comments Photojim wrote: "As a reader that is. Do you faithfully stand by your book and see it through to the conclusion forsaking all others? Or like some brazen book hussy do you pick up any old book that pleases you at..."

I am more like the favorite aunt that never breathes between partners. I read about two books a day. It is rare for me to stray but I have done it a time or two when a long awaited sequel comes out.

message 89: by Bella (new)

Bella Foxygobble (dcrain02) | 77 comments I usually have 2 or 3 going at the same time. 1 in the upstairs bathroom, 1 in the downstairs bathroom and 1 that travels with me from room to room. I can't have cross-contamination!

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) | 5294 comments Kim, your aunts sound much more fun than mine. Mom is one of nine. Dad is one of nine. Mother in law is one of eleven. Father in law is one of sixteen. Out of all of that there are three divorces and three widowed/remarried. I guess we just are bred to stick it out no matter what happens.

message 91: by Adrienne (new)

Adrienne Dani are you saying you're a brazen book hussy LOL

Domino (aka Meme) (bryghtstarr) | 409 comments Dani wrote: "I usually have 2 or 3 going at the same time. 1 in the upstairs bathroom, 1 in the downstairs bathroom and 1 that travels with me from room to room. I can't have cross-contamination!"

that made me laugh. haha

message 93: by Rei (new)

Rei I'm not monogamouse reader.I can keep up with three books at a time because every book is distinct to it's personality. also i have books to read for school and for on my own, and sometimes i usally go with the books that i have a certain feeling for.
Ex. if i feel mysterious i read spy novel, or if i feel romantic i read something spicy. and i will hunt them down to satisfy my moods.

message 94: by Bella (new)

Bella Foxygobble (dcrain02) | 77 comments Adrienne wrote: "Dani are you saying you're a brazen book hussy LOL"

absolutely! LOL

message 95: by Booknerd (new)

Booknerd | 4 comments As a kid I was faithfully monogamous, but as an adult with so many new authors and tons of good books, I find myself reading 2-3 at a time. Sometimes I start reading a book to review, then get caught up "reading for fun". Eventually one book commands my attention so much that I end up focusing on that one before heading back. Crazy situation that I'm working on. (lol)

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) | 5294 comments Jasmin, you don't read? I suppose for those that are not in a healthy book situation, they could watch a movie. I understand that it's healthy and everybody does it. But you sure wouldn't want to have other people watch you while you were watching a movie.

message 97: by Jasmin (new)

Jasmin (princ3ssjasmin) | 91 comments haha thats what happens when you'r too excited to reply!

sorry photojim. of course I do read, i just happened to skip the instructions. definitely not healthy in exams. Thank goodness I graduated already.

I would do my best to not take ur comment too seriously. Well I guess I did behave quite illiterate. Sorry for that.

___
as for the thread, polygamous. though I tend to concentrate on one book than the other.

message 98: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 1103 comments I'm a book hussy. I tend to have 3 or 4 going at once and a couple of audiobooks. I liken it ot following several TV shows at once.
