J. Gowin | 7999 comments Squirrels are tasty and are adaptable to many recipes.

My personal preference for hunting squirrels is a pistol chambered in .22lr. I enjoy the challenge of pistol hunting. Standard load outs are .22 caliber rifles, small gauge shotguns, air rifles, and sling shots.

J. Gowin | 7999 comments Considering my grocery bill this morning, I'd say we're in trying times. Squirrels are on the menu.

I've had rattlesnake, and it was tasty.

had plenty of wild game. Not a fan of bear.

message 706: by J. (new)

J. Gowin | 7999 comments Yeah. As I understand it, the gamey flavor is concentrated in fat. And bear is very fatty.

Any favorites?

Moose, venison, pheasant, and rabbit.

It was not the gamey flavor for me, but the fattiness of the bear. I have been told that I have not had it made properly.

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 8079 comments Those blue land crabs are probably tasty. After a hard rain, probably can be scooped up with a net. I'm wondering -- if they mostly stay underground, what do they eat? Surely they have to come out of their holes to feed?

message 711: by J. (new)

J. Gowin | 7999 comments According to this source: https://www.naplesnews.com/story/news...

Giant land crabs are primarily vegetarians, preferring tender leaves, fruits, berries, flowers and some vegetables. Occasionally they will eat beetles or other large insects.

message 712: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 8079 comments I don't get it. They're invasive but there are rules for harvesting them? What the heck? People are paid for killing invasive pythons in Florida, but these crabs are protected by harvesting rules? Is this even a serious problem?

message 713: by J. (new)

J. Gowin | 7999 comments They're invasive outside of their native range, which includes south Florida.

message 714: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 8079 comments Seems it should be kill on sight then, instead of having harvesting regulations.

No, Octopus are Mollusks and Spiders are Arthropods. Not even close.

message 719: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 8079 comments Octopuses are truly creepy looking creatures, as are spiders. Between the two, I'd be hard pressed to pick a favorite :-)

I had fried tarantula appetizers in a restaurant which specialized in "exotic" dishes. They were mostly crunch with the only real flavor being from the seasoning.

I've had octopus in both Japanese and Spanish style restaurants. It was chewy both ways. I preferred the Spanish style because the favor went beautifully with paprika and saffron.

If the appetizer fulfilled its function, all is good 🕷️:)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 8079 comments I'll be the South Georgia girl who says spiders gross me out :-) Not that I won't try new things - I've eaten raw squid which, honestly, wasn't terrible, but I won't do it again. Spiders - no no no. Nope.

J. Gowin | 7999 comments Papaphilly wrote: "I have heard about eating tarantulas. Not so sure I want to try."

It was mostly just crunch and seasoning. I wouldn't recommend it as a can't miss experience. But if they're on the menu at a low price, they can add ambiance to an exotic or spooky dinner.

Grilled octopus tentacles are better. Unfortunately, the only time I whipped out the hibachi and did yakitori style tentacles my then girlfriend freaked right out. It turns out that having similar epicurean tastes is a prerequisite for a successful relationship.

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 8079 comments So blue land crabs aren't invasive. This has been a confusing story from the beginning. Even now, you're supposed to report if you see one. Why? It seems that they're kind of like the armadillos here in Georgia that migrated from Texas. They aren't a threat to the environment: they just dig holes in your yard and are a nuisance.
