The story is narrated by a six-year-old Jean Louise finch and takes place during the great depression in Alabama. Jean lives with her brother Jeremy and her widowed father Atticus, a lawyer. They also live with a black cook named Calpurnia. Jeremy and Jean befriend a boy named Dill, and they're fascinated at their reclusive neighbor Arthur "Boo" Radley who hasn't been seen for years. Meanwhile Judge Tailor appoints Atticus to defend Tom, a black man who was accused of rape. Jeremy, Jean, and jill defend Atticus' image from racist townsfolk while the Ewell's (Mayella and Bob) who accused tom of the crime are exposed as liar's and are labeled as "white trash" by the town. Bob Ewell later tries to attack Jeremy and Jean but is foiled when Boo Radley rescues the kids. Sherriff Tate Finds that Bob was killed by a knife wound but to protect Boo's (likely suspect) privacy he assumes Bob fell on his own knife. Jean walks Boo home never to see him again and wonders what life looks like from Boo's perspective.
I will give this book 5/5 for plot, originality, and characters. This book is a classic for a reason and shows how people interacted with each other in the south during the 30's.
