It's usually pretty safe? Idk, thats what I do with people I don't know, most my cousins don't even speak english so it's awkward but in a different way. Okay, you should try to find the most chatty of the bunch, and get them to start a conversation, that way, it won't feel awkward if somebody is talking.

My family is awkward because I have literally NOTHING in common with them. Like, the extent of my comfortableness goes out to my siblings, my mom, and my grandparents. My dad doesn't get my comfortableness cuz damn he's JUDEGEMENTAL and I dislike my American relatives and I have nothing in common with my Egyptian ones soooooo yeah. I've got a weird family XD

my mom got one helluva laugh out of it too, cause she warned them not to touch my book, so when I flipped out on them, she laughed and when their parents whined at her about what I did, she was like 'bruh, I told them not to touch her books. she is a book fiend what makes you think they could mess with her books and walk away unscathed?' and they couldn't do a damn thing haha
