M-my story? U-um, well, I guess I could tell you... I was born 21 years ago on December 22nd, and, well, that was my mother's death date as well. She died in childbirth, you see, and it drives me insane that she died because of me. F-forget that last part, actually. Anyway, as you can imagine, my father was more then a little mad at me, even as a baby, so I didn't get much love there. And as I grew up, well, according to him I look just like my mother did, and his grief and pain never went away. Just like my suffering. O-oh, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to complain! It's just, every day he would call me terrible names I won't repeat, and sometimes he even k-kicked me or hit me, so, I just felt like it was a neccasary part of my history to add, I really wasn't trying to complain...

U-um, so that continued without faltering, and I felt pretty unloved at that point. My father is an important official, so he wasn't really around much luckily, but being told how stupid, and idiotic, and bratty I was, every single night, well, after a while I guess I began to believe it. I was an only child, so I didn't even have any siblings to turn to. So instead, I adopted learning as my new family. Since my days were filled with avoiding people as much as possible, I would often take books, of course I always returned them afterwards, from the royal library to read in a closet or my room or on the roof. Anywhere my father wouldn't be. But I would sit and read and learn and enjoy myself, it was what kept me going, really. Since there werent many children's books, Id usually just take whatever I could grab. Books about anatomy, other languages, even history, which a girl would normally never be allowed to read.

And so life went on. Sure, I was screamed at and beaten almost every night, but the days made it worth it. And then one day, one that would change my life forever, I met him. One day he found me reading a guide to english in the closet, and, well, my whole life turned upside down. He was sweet, and kind, and understanding, and when he wasnt cleaning around the palace he would come and read with me. We'd learn together and talk together, and sometimes we'd just sit together for each other's company. Each night became more and more bearable,and I even began to look forward to life in general. Everything was simply amazing. Slowly, ever so slowly,I began to feel something, and with a little bit of research I identified it. Love. That feeling that my younger days had been so devoid of, I was now experiencing. It felt so wonderful, and at the time I thought it would never end. I miss those days.

One day, many years after I had first met him, we had decided to sit on the roof together and look up at the stars. I had come of course, glad for any excuse to get away from my father, but what came next was completely unexpected to me, and my reaction even more so. He told me he loved me. And I said I loved him to. I was so overjoyed, I hugged him and he hugged me back and everytning seemed perfect in the world at that moment. I woke up happy, stayed awake happy, everything was going smoothly. Until one night, similar to when we had confessed our love. We were sitting in my room's balcony, just gazing at the stars, until the door swung open. My father stalked into the room, obviously infuriated. He grabbed my arm even more roughly then usual, leaving marks for days, and began to tug me out of the room. I looked at my lover for help, but what I saw shocked me into complete silence. He bowed to my father, apologized, and helped him drag me from my room. That night I slept in the dungeon where my father secretly kept me for the next week, but my lover didnt even come once. Or when I got out. Or ever.

My days after that continued along in a blur, the onky thing really notable was my obvious misery. For a while, I became incredibly suicidal, but I was always too scared to tie the noose, so my pathetic existance continued. However, my father wasn't finished with me quite yet. He needed money, and he had a beautiful daughter, so guess what he did? He sold me off like a sheep, as if I never mattered to him at all, although I already knew that by then. He sold me to the royals to be the prince's concubine. To be just another part of his harem. I was mortified, but then, if I considered it, it meant I could avoid my father more, so in the end I consented, not that I really would've disagreed anyway. As it turns out, when I met the prince, he wasn't the cruel tormentor I expected everyone in the world to be like, and in fact I ended up liking him quite a bit, but I could never love someone romantically again. So instead, I loved him like an older brother. Like the caring family member I had always yearned for. I ended up becoming very close to the prince, and he provided the emotional support I was lacking in my life, but still, both the visible scars from my father's physical abuse, and more painfully, the invisible scars my old lover left, were still there. Now here I am today. It still hurts, I'm still timid, and I still fear other people, but I think, even if slowly, my seemingly eternal emotional scars are starting to fade, one by one. Perhaps there is a bright future for me, perhaps my fractured heart will be crushed even further, but for now, I think- I think I'm happy.
