I usually just give male characters the same qualities as any of my female characters. I mean, I don't really view them as different; it's really just the way they're written, I think.

Okay well first and foremost practice does make perfect, my style has been adapting and changing for as long as I can remember. I find that simply sitting down and drawing from life allowed me to create my own style but initially I took inspiration from other artists and art styles.

I started out with anime, just following tutorials and drawing various people - just getting to know the human form. This started to seem a little unrealistic to me though so then I started looking at Disney artist Glen Keane and Marvel artist Sara Pichelli >> both of these are insanely good. I started just by sketching some of their works and deciding what I liked and what I didn't. Keane uses big eyes and very 'Disney' proportions which I didn't like, Pichelli's work can use too many dark lines. It's all about deciding what you think looks good on paper.

There's a few deviant art artists who inspire me, such as burdge bug, uponagraydawn, viria, vasira...just googling these will bring them up.

I think it's definitely good to work from other peoples styles but ultimately if you want to create your own and eventually just be able to sit and draw characters from imagination it works to just draw from real life. It's hard and when I started, my drawings were sooo crappy (believe me they will never see the light of day) but in time I began to get a better feel for anatomy and how things should look and work. Most drawings should have a flow and a dynamic so you could almost imagine the character walking off the page or moving their hands, some drawings can look too static because the artist is trying too hard to copy someone elses style.
