How do we interpret the ending?

What ever happened to Nina, Sophia's mother? Does the Count stay in Russia with the actress or do they leave for America? Does the Count ever see Sophia again? I had all these questions when I finished the book. Does anyone have any ideas?

I think that Nina died at the work camp town she went to find/help her husband. I think he left after the dust settled via Finland, to Paris or Lisbon on to America to join Sophia otherwise I don't understand why he went to the trouble to steal the passport.
