1970s or 80s sci fi book. Main character is male. He has a neighbor with a pink genetically engineered pet/dog that can say a few words but is generally stupid. Story is tragic but I can’t remember details. The cover of the book had a man walking along a barren landscape with a round furry creature/pet following behind him. I read this back in the early 80s and have not been able to find it but it has stuck with me all these years.
