Winter (winter9) | 5008 comments This is where we will discuss the book after we start reading it in April.

Ilona | 4698 comments Somehow I always find classics a bit daunting before I start, but I am now 6 chapters in and find this one is very readable!

Has anyone else started reading yet?

Danielle (reading.w.kenz_n_dee) (daniyellers) | 16 comments I have! They sure can be daunting at first. I'm glad I chose an audiobook version - I feel like I need it for classics. I'm up to chapter 18 myself and am having a severe case of wanderlust.

Iceland has always been a place I've wanted to visit, but it's slowly making gains on my bucket list. Did you know there is a place in Iceland where they have a Jules Verne Monument?

I did not, but I'll look it up. Thanks for sharing!

Valerie (nicehotcupoftea) | 169 comments I'm about a quarter way in and I'm really enjoying it. It's easy to read, and I enjoyed following their voyage on a map. My French version has some lovely illustrations too.

Ilona | 4698 comments I am going a bit slower than you two :) In chapter 10 they are discussing the love for books that is part of Icelandic culture. It reminded me on the Icelandic tradition to give each other books on Christmas Eve, and spend the evening reading. I love that!

Yes I loved that too!

Andrew Mossberg (mossberg) | 1 comments I saw as well that there is a Jules Verne Monument close to Sneffels! It made me want to check out airfares to go visit. I'm up to chapter 31 in the Griffith & Farran (1871) English edition. It's been awhile since I last read Verne and it's nice to revisit this work. Good suggestion.

I'm in the same boat! *pun intended* I've already looked up airfares and all the beautiful places to visit! It's definitely on my want to visit soon list!

Rachael (allons-y-bookworm) | 4789 comments I'm surprised how readable this is. I was expecting to be baffled by science (maybe that will come later?) but instead am quite enjoying the descriptions of their travels. I'm at chapter 10 now

Mario Kumi | 33 comments I have read this book many times in the past. It is truly a gem of sci-fi genre. Unbelievable that it was written in 1864 and still to this day continues to amaze.

Ilona | 4698 comments Does anyone feel like some of the chapter titles are really spoilery? Like for chapter 22 (view spoiler). It takes away the suspense!

Alicja (140177766-alicja) I have just started to read the book myself and to be honest I like the fact that it is written as though it was a journal of the expedition, with the author seeing to allow us to take part in the journey with him whilst he is trying to find the center of the Earth. I was however very surprised but how generally scared and reluctant the author is to take the journey, trying to ensure it's cancellation at every turn. I expected to see the journey described from the perspective of someone wishing to go on it, but I can say that I actually think it would have made the book less pleasant if he did in fact want to go on the journey.

Yes I have found that the book is more interesting then I expected. I actually thought I would want to put the book down and was somewhat reluctant to start it. I'm on chapter 16.

I think that the book would have been even more interesting if all of the editions had a map, especially at the beginning of the chapter to show you their progress. I think it would be fun to follow along and be able to see where they are along the way, kind of like you were travelling with them.

I was thinking the same thing!

SarahKat | 6352 comments I just started this tonight finally! To respond to Ilona's very first comment, I too find classics daunting and a hated The Time Machine (another classic sci-fi), so I was concerned. However, on chapter 4, I'm finding it not as bad as I thought! Perhaps even enjoyable, though not much has happened yet.

Glad to hear that I wasn't the only one!
