Our protagonist Tom Hazard has a heavy burden and it's not easy seeing him struggle as he tries to find happiness in his complicated life. As much as he tries he can't seem to stop thinking about Camille. His students find him interesting as he seems to know so much about historical figures like William Shakespeare. Tom reflected back on the rumors that his mother was a witch. She was not a witch, just a mother protecting her son and his rare abilities of not growing older.

Tom continued to suffer with bad headaches and tinnitus due to the Spanish Civil War. Tom sees Camille at school and notices she swallows a pill. He apologizes to her for his rudeness. He notices she is reading Tender Is the Night by F. Scott Fitzgerald and recalls his meeting Fitzgerald and Zelda. He remembered moments meeting cinema star Lilian Gish and seeing Charlie Chaplin.

His history class lessons were difficult at times as Tom had to catch himself talking about historical characters as acquaintances and his class wondering how their teacher knows so much about these historical figures in so much detail. Tom goes out for drinks with Camille and friends and they have a discussion about music and piano.

Can Tom continue to avoid his feelings toward Camille? Will the secret society discover his relationship with her? He has put himself at risk, will be able to protect himself and Camille? Camille remains interested in Tom, she is also very curious about him and his life, will she get closer to finding out about his truth? Tom's class is beginning to wonder about his historical knowledge, can he continue to hide the truth from them?
