"BALL UP!" - Val's 2022 Aussie Rules Footy Tipping *Open to Everyone*
sorry I've just seen your messages thankyou for your messages ,he's been in intensive care all week , yesterday they popped him in the lift to go to the high dependency ward ,his heart rate went up to 160 so they've taken him back again. He does seem better today so hopefully will move over the weekend.Val I ve been thinking about The SWANS,I've had them as my team for many years but to hear Tim saying that he is an actual supporter and had watched them play ,I'd like him to have them next season( Small sob)
Tonight's result:Geelong Cats (available) v Brisbane Lions (David)
4.2.26 (Q1) 2.0.12
7.7.49 (Q2) 3.1.19
14.11.95 (Q3) 5.2.32
18.12.120 (Q4) 7.7.49
Talk about one way! Paddy Dangerfield was on fire, but all the Cats players remained calm and did a great job in shutting down the Lions' best. On to a Grand Final!
Val you are right about the Cats who were in command throughout and their play was as near perfect as it is possible to get. Well apart from kicking by Hawkins in the early stages but he adjusted radar in the end as well. Whoever plays them in Grand Final will have a job on their hands
Anita your kind and generous offer to hand over the SWANS really touched me but you have had them for years and I am a newby to this game so I cannot accept. I am more than happy to keep my support with the BLUES ( they need it) for the context of this competition. My best wishes go out to you in this dreadful time. I know what it is like and how stressful and draining it is as went through similar times with both of my parents. My thoughts are with you.
Nicely played Tim. In earlier times, Anita has risen in the wee small hours to cheer on the Swans in a Grand Final.
I am not sure who was picked as player of match tonight but with out a doubt for me it was Hickey. What a story. We gave him a chance when no one else would and he was magnificent tonight. Just very concerned if Sam Reid doesnt recover too much will be placed on Hickey next week given Ladhams will still be banned
Well they do say that the only thing better than beating Collingwood is beating them by one point.Sydney Swans v Collingwood Magpies
6.3.39 (Q1) 3.0.18
11.7.73 (Q2) 7.7.43
13.10.88 (Q3) 10.5.65
14.11.95 (Q4) 14.10.94
What a tough game! I felt every knock that Buddy took! Was Maynard trying to kill him? Congrats to Sydney and all the players. The McCartin brothers, Mills, Ryan, Papley, Chad Warner, Blakey, Parker and more, all played their part. Heeney may have been a bit quieter than usual but he was still in there giving his all. And I was so glad that the Swans weren't tricked into retaliating and possibly getting reported. Here's hoping Reid does pull through and well as young Max Holmes from Geelong. It's the Grand Final I was hoping for and may it be as exciting as so many games in this finals series have been.
Tim, you're heart must have been beating overtime in that last quarter when the Pies were coming so strongly. Your boys didn't panic though and kept their heads to the end. Thanks for exacting revenge for that heartbreaking one point win that the Pies inflicted so cruelly on Essendon earlier in the season.
I'll be back sometime tomorrow with the winner from this round (can't get at the desktop where I keep my Excel charts as family are sleeping over tonight). And tomorrow night is also Brownlow night where some more money is up for grabs. Will it go to David with Lachie Neale or Tim with Patrick Cripps? Maybe Suzy with Touk Miller or Nick with Clayton Oliver? Or will Freo's early favourite Andrew Brayshaw scoop the pool?
Our tipsters' results for Week 3:Val - 2 - 52 (44+8)
Blastro - 2 - 53 (48+5)
SussexWelsh - 2 - 63 (54+9)
Steve - 2 - 65 (55+10)
Lez - 2 - 70 (28+42)
Anita - 2 - 73 (53+20)
Tim - 2 - 76 (55+21)
Duke - 1 - 63 (56+7)
Philip - 1 - 111 (87+24)
Suzy - 0 - 86 (78+8)
David - 0 - 87 (81+6)
We all went pretty close with the second game, hopeless on the first. I score $15 for the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre. And Tim takes home another $15 for the Koala Hospital at Port Macquarie because tonight's Brownlow Medal went to Carlton's Patrick Cripps.
One last tip is required to see out the 2022 AFL season.Saturday, 24 September
Grand Final
Geelong Cats (available) v Sydney Swans (Anita)
If you can get your tip done by midnight Friday September 23 that would be very welcome. The absolute latest is 5.30am (your time) Saturday. And don't forget the margin.
Well...those Swans have kept surprising me...i hadn't really given enough credit to them throughout the season....but i still think that the Cats will be far too strong, so:Cats to claim the trophy by 26 points.
Apologies Val it looks like I missed one. Head's really up me arse at the moment. Wasn't intentional just totally forgot. Get this un in now so I don't forget again...
Geelong 21
Thanks
Val thanks for your comments on the Swans. They stood upand dug deep but that last quarter was agony. Fair play to the Pies they just kept coming and a horrible loss for them and their supporters.I see no one so far has tipped the Swans and my logic tells me that is correct but my heart cannot go against them now. I have my ticket which incidentally cost more than my whole annual Victorian membership but who cares it is the experience that counts. I will go feeling we have nothing to lose and have to say with little expectation and just hoping we do not suffer a huge loss as we did in 2016.
Therefore Swans by 5
30 minutes to the bounce and the atmosphere is electric. No rain and it seems there's blue skies over the MCG although it's a bit cloudy outside here. I hope Tim's sitting comfortably in his red and white gear and got the butterflies under control. We've had the parade of the retiring players plus all the award winners this year. And the Grand Final sprint - run in an arc because it was sponsored by Colgate toothpaste (it's a smile - get it?) - won convincingly by Richmond's Hugo Ralphsmith. I'm a bit worried that Essendon didn't have a participant!
Robbie Williams did a great set out in the middle of the ground. It was nice of him to give a nod to John Farnham by singing "You're The Voice" (John is recovering in hospital after a massive operation to remove a tumour from his mouth).
On to the game now....
Both teams on the filed now. I had a tear in my eye when Geelong took to the field with captain Joel Selwood carrying Gary Ablett Jnr's three-year old son Levi. A classy gesture.https://www.news.com.au/sport/afl/jor...
Sydney won the toss. Joel Selwood went to the bench for the first five minutes (as Geelong often does with their older players) but the first half has been all Geelong. If they had nailed their set shots the game might have been over. Geelong Cats (available) v Sydney Swans (Anita)
6.5.41 (Q1) 1.0.6
Interesting that Geelong decided against taking a chance on Max Holmes' injury (bringing in Irishman Mark O'Connor) but Sydney have named Sam Reid and Justin McInerney when history warns against taking injured players into a big game. I'm not even sure Buddy is 100% after two bruising finals games, but you would always have him in your squad.
Half time and Sydney are fighting back but Geelong seem to have their measure at this stage.Geelong Cats (available) v Sydney Swans (Anita)
6.5.41 (Q1) 1.0.6
9.8.62 (Q2) 4.2.26
Sam Reid has been taken off - decidedly proppy. Jack Henry has stood tall in defence for the Cats and I love how the small forwards Close and Myers get back to help out. Two great goals from Tyson Stengle and another from Brad Close. And two from Isaac Smith - I love him, surely the happiest player in the AFL, always smiling. But I'm not writing off Sydney yet.
Have to say that was an embarrassing quarter for the Swans. The Cats have an answer for everything. Rowbottom and Fox the only Swans to impress me today.Geelong Cats (available) v Sydney Swans (Anita)
6.5.41 (Q1) 1.0.6
9.8.62 (Q2) 4.2.26
15.11.101 (Q3) 4.3.27
Cameron and Rowan have been kept goal-less and it's made no difference. Take your pick for the Norm Smith medal - Danger? Smith? Stengle? Selwood?
As the banner says:
Too old
Too slow
Too good
Turns out Sussex was the bravest of our tipsters. He picked the Cats by 29 points (just a shade off the winning margin of 81) so he wins our final prize of the season - $15 for the Save The Bilby Fund.I will be back in the next couple of days with the final wrap up of who won what and where the donations are going. I'm off to the Royal Melbourne Show tomorrow so it'll probably be Monday before I get round to it. See you then.
What can I say. Didnt expect Swans to win but manner of defeat was humiliating. Credit to Cats who were ruthless but pathetic effort from Swans who just did not turn up and such a lwt down for the occasion following a great season of AFL.Team selection was completely wrong with clearly an unfit Reid playing which in itself was a disgrace. I blame the player who must have known he should not have been on the pitch.
What this will do for the Swans next season I have no idea but just hope they reflect on what they achieved up until yesterday and come out in March to prove a point.
Well done Cats you have been the best team in the comp by far this season and deserve the flag
Love the Cats' Mad Monday celebrations after all the criticism of them being too old (10 players are in their 30s and another 2 will turn 30 next year)

Heya Val and thank you. I read your message you posted to me on the other group, and that's fine Val.
Once again..a mighty heartfelt appreciation for running this once again and your sterling efforts on keeping track of everything and everybody...including those who were absent this season, not forgetting the late lovely Lez too.
I hope Suzy will make a return to the group someday in the not too distant future.
Can't wait for it to all begin again next season......and i very hope i'll be back to my old self once more, to properly enjoy the games. Gawd, what a year it's been....urgh! :-S
thanks once again for your organisational skills and remarkable generosity..........................I feel I haven't mentioned that i won for a while! 😁
Hi Val, thank you so much for your extraordinary generosity and the way you have run this wonderful competition. I really cannot work out how my donations are nearly double my closest opponent especially given my selected team is Carlton who can hardly have added much this season. You have inspired me and I will match the donation and send off to the Koalas. Having visited the hospital many times whilst working in Port Macquarie back in 2014 I know how they need everything they can get to help. It also reminds me that it was in Port Macquarie where I spent a very lonely afternoon in my apartment in September 2014 watching the Swans lose to Hawthorn in the Grand final that season. My wife, Victoria declined to travel up that weekend! At least it had a lovely view over one of the many fine beaches in that area.
I too loved the Geelong Mad Monday celebration which was very funny.
Already looking forward to next season and hopefully can make a few more matches than I managed this year.
Tim wrote: "I really cannot work out how my donations are nearly double my closest opponent especially given my selected team is Carlton who can hardly have added much this season. ."You did very well Tim....as for wondering how one amassed a large donation haul.....i'm wondering how i got my lot....since my Giants were dreadful this season!
And I'd also like to add my appreciation for your generosity too Val....i forgot to add that vital bit in my last post! I made a donation earlier on to the RNIB. Your suggestion to donate to Tinnitus Australia this year, would make a nice balance.
Tim - it was easy to amass that sum, mainly down to your astute punting!Highest score (Carlton) x 1 = $7.00
Closest margin x 4 = $28.00
Weekly wins x 4 = $48.00
3rd overall at season's end = $15.00
Winner of Round 1 of Finals = $15.00
Coleman Medal (Carlton) = $15.00
Brownlow Medal (Carlton) = $15.00
Total: $142 rounded up to $145.
Turns out Carlton weren't that bad after all!
I've made all the charity donations with the exception of Blastro's (Zaidee's Rainbow Foundation) - for some reason I fill in all the details, press Donate, and nothing happens. I will keep trying or else may have to find another children's charity. It's funny, this is the 11th year of doing this and I've always had immediate confirmation by email of the donations - this year, of the 13 donations made, only 6 have sent a confirmation email. I know my bank statement will show the recipients but still, I think it's a bit slack. I'm now too old to pay tax (there has to be some benefit for getting old!) but you would need some proof if you were making a tax claim. Duke's Tinnitus Australia wouldn't let me pay by debit card (seems mine is not a "Strike" card - what's a Strike card anyway?) so I had to pay by PayPal. Never thought that, of course, there would be no accompanying information so I received an email from someone called Rosie from Soundfair (???) asking me what I was paying for (I think she thought I was buying something). After carefully deliberating to check it wasn't a scam email (I am with Optus after all), I was able to reply and put her straight and she was very interested in the whole concept of the footy tipping comp and Duke's (unasked for) interest in tinnitus. I miss the old days when I used to make donations by explanatory letter, cheque and stamped, self-addressed envelopes. I used to get some lovely hand-written replies from people telling me of their own footy allegiances or just passing on best wishes to the U.K. brigade. I used to get nice letters from Don Spencer (David's charity The Song Room), known to my generation as a Play School presenter but possibly better known as Russell Crowe's former father-in-law. Oh well, such is life, now it's just me online giving away all my personal information, hoping scammers won't pick it up and knowing I will be inundated with charity appeals from charities, many of which I have never given a groat to.
I forgot the donations for the medals which really had nothing to do with me but thank you Carlton. It is very slack you did not receive immediate confirmations. I am assuming one of the 6 you did get back was from the Koala Hospital as I did get a nice receipt immediately when I sent mine yesterday.
Once again Val a huge thank you. The competition has been such fun. I did win a similar competition at my workplace which apparently has won me a $100 voucher I didnt even know was up for grabs. They have neglected to tell me who it is with yet but no doubt will find out in due course.
