Arsène Lupin, Gentleman-Thief by Maurice Leblanc

Like many early mysteries, this was a succession of short stories featuring French master-thief Arsène Lupin, who gets away with everything short of murder but has a conscience and can be generous too. The final story included Sherlock Holmes as a character who is called to France to catch the famous thief(view spoiler).

Lupin clearly owes a lot to Raffles, but the stories are different and enjoyably grounded in their era. I particularly enjoyed the one where Lupin was installed as a secretary in the house of a couple who were said to keep a fortune in bonds in their safe.

Edith's Diary by Patricia Highsmith

This was not the thriller that I was expecting. It traces Edith Howland's humdrum life with her husband and disappointing son in the small town of Brunswick Corner. As reality diverges further and further from her hopes, she records a different kind of life in her diary.

I think my expectations got in the way here. I kept waiting for the story to get started, right up to the end. In fact I didn't immediately realise it was the end, because I was reading a Kindle edition that included a bonus Highsmith short story, so the end of Edith's Diary was at only 96%. As a character study it was very lifelike, but I felt there was something missing.

A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett

Life happens. Little (motherless) Sara Crewe was the apple of her wealthy father's eye. Before returning to India, he enrolls her in a boarding school in London. The headmistress sees a chance for money to pour in and fakes affection toward Sara until...Mr. Crewe has no money and no life! Sara's life does a 360 and she goes from daddy's princess to school slave. A vivid imagination helps to temper a dreary, impoverished reality. Magically, a mysterious, anonymous friend intervenes and makes all well for Sara. Good story!

Rebekah (bekalynn) 10.9 Dual Timelines
Doomsday Book by Connie Willis

Review
*WARNING!- plot elements discussed*

Aside from illustrating the proverbs about being careful what you wish for and the grass isn’t always greener, this book predicted what our society has been going through these past years with Covid-19. When it first struck me, I looked again at the published date of 1992. The story switches between the time periods of the 14th century when the Bubonic Plague sweeps Europe and in the winter of 2054/2055 when a unknown new strain of influenza virus for which there is no vaccine or antidote starts showing up in Oxford. Finding the symptoms and final fatal outcomes of the Oxford outbreak so similar to our modern Covid-19, I looked for events in the late 1980’s and 1990’s that may have been her inspiration. I knew the Bird Flu and SARS epidemics came about in 21st century so ruled them out. The Hong Kong flu was a pandemic in the 1960’s but in the 1980’s began the HIV AIDS panicdemic, to coin a new term, for it did cause mass panic. By 1992, it had been on the scene for ten years and had become the leading cause of death for males 20-45 years old. Even though the mode of transmission by then was better known and had more in common with the transmission through body fluids as in the Black Death rather than the flu, I wondered if this was an influence on her creative imagination. The storylines in both the 14th and 21st centuries had their respective epidemics as central to their plots and the storylines revolved around this. Both plots involved the deaths of important and dearly loved characters, quarantines, and even the same grumbling about restriction of traveling and wearing of masks we have heard in our times. It is just uncanny that her 21st century disease was predicted three decades ago and was placed in a time frame of three decades after such a disease did occur with same devastating effects.

Review:
A cozy mystery about a bookseller (Gemma), who co-owns the Sherlock Holmes Bookshop and Emporium. So, of course, the story evolves around a mysterious magazine found hidden on the shelves, a family heirloom, an inheritance contested, and two murders. Gemma, the bookseller, spends most of the story trying to solve the who-dun-it as she is the chief suspect.

There is a previous love interest who is a cop and a best friend who is the Watson to Gemma's investigations. And, of course, lots of red herrings.

I especially liked the fact that, although Gemma is very observant and frequently deduces correctly, she also makes many errors in her deductions. It makes her feel just a bit more human.

Another new series for me to pursue. 4*

Review:
I seem to be on a kick-ass paranormal story binge.

In this one, the female protagonist is human Made into High Fae. She is strong, loyal, and determined to punish those who harm her family ~ human or Fae. She is High Lady. Her name is Feyre.

She is mated to Rhysand, the High Lord. And, their bond makes me yearn for the same, even though I am a woman of 70+ years. Hot!

This is a story of family...birth and chosen. It is a story of doing what is right even though the cost is high. It is a story of friendship and right triumphing over evil. In other words...a magical wonderful world where all that is wrong eventually finds its end...but not without cost.

Bermuda Grass by Keith Miles

KEITH = 5 letters

Review:
I must admit that I did not think this mystery would be as good as another that I had recently read set also in Bermuda, but I was wrong. However, unlike the previously referred to mystery, this one did not rely on the setting nor did it evoke my own visit to this island nation.

That said, not only was there a murder and a sabotaged new golf course, but there was also a kidnapping. There were lots of suspects also from the hotel manager to the irate father to the lover.

And, I did not figure it out. Like the author intended, I vacillated between suspects and was surprised by the outcome. A nicely done cozy style mystery.

Oona Out of Order. Margarita Montimore

While not as good as The Time Traveler's Wife, this book was still enjoyable and a fairly quick read. It lacked somewhat in depth and character development, you only got to see Oona in her mental 20s, and I think most of us would agree that we didn't always make the best decisions at that age. One thing that seemed to contradict her rule of not letting her knowledge of the future affect decisions she made, was the way she became a millionaire by doing just that.

Elizabeth (Alaska) 20.10 Between the Wars

The Ends of the Earth by Robert Goddard

This entire trilogy takes place in about 4-5 months in 1919. While providing some backstory in this volume, Goddard provides a glimpse of Paris during the peace talks.
The gathering of the weary victors of the Great War has filled Paris with such men as Sir Henry - the politicians and functionaries of dozens of governments, along with the journalists, spies, mistresses, chancers, schemers and suppliers of unspecified services drawn to the councils of the powerful as are flies to a dungheap.
With such a short time span, one would think it could have been a single novel. The first volumes end in huge cliff hangers and there is no question but one must continue to read to find out what happens. The combined page length is a bit over 1400 pages, so 3 volumes it is. This installment doesn't quite pick up where the previous one left off and there are a few chapters before Goddard gets back to let us know what happened in the minutes after The Corners of the Globe ended. My reviews don't include spoilers, but I'll proffer that I was fairly confident that what was thought to have happened at the end of that book would be refuted. At least I was right about that.

I'll repeat what I've said before: this trilogy is all plot. The characters are believable enough to pull off the plot. "Believable enough" is just as adequate as is the writing, but probably not more so. The good guys get themselves into terrible fixes - almost as bad as that woman in the old film who is tied to the railroad tracks with the train steaming toward her. No woman tied to the railroad tracks here, but it's hard to imagine worse disasters short of death itself.

Historical thrillers must appeal to me, though it surprises me to say so. I have managed to pick up four more titles by Goddard and if I saw more cheap I'd grab them. I don't suggest he makes any attempt to be literature, but it (and the series) was such an enjoyable read I can't avoid marking it a full 4-stars.

Our Riches by Kaouther Adimi

"Our Riches" is a fictionalized biography of book publisher Edmond Charlot, a window into mid-Twentieth Century Algerian history, and an expression of love of the written word. At the young age of 20, Charlot opened Les Vraies Richesses (the true wealth) in 1936 in Algiers. It was a small bookstore, lending library, and cultural center where Charlot also published Mediterranean authors. Many of his publications are widely read classics today, especially those written by Albert Camus. Charlot's life is told in brief journal entries from the 1930s to the 1960s, grounded in historical research. The creation of the bookstore and publishing company, a second publishing location in wartime Paris, and Charlot's friendships with the authors are all part of the journal.

A second timeline, set in 2017, is devoted to the destruction of the bookstore to transform the space into a beignet shop. Ryad, a student who needs an internship experience performing manual labor, travels from France with orders to destroy all the books and furniture, and paint the walls. Ryad does not enjoy reading, and has no idea of the cultural history of the bookstore. An old Arab man, Abdallah, often stands on the sidewalk outside the bookstore where he formerly worked. He tells Ryad his fond memories of the store. While Ryad will never be a book lover himself, he gains an appreciation of what the books mean to others. Ryad is around the same age as Charlot was when he started his dream of publishing books. It was impossible not to compare and contrast the two young men.

The colonial power of France occupied Algeria for 132 years, and Algeria's fight for independence was woven into the story. The author's love for the city of Algiers, with its beautiful Mediterranean location, is sensed throughout the story. This is a slim book with lovely writing that is well worth reading.

This was hard to read. It took me forever, because it just didn’t work for me as a novel. There wasn’t enough character or plot to hang on to, so after a half hour of effort I would get weary of trying to keep myself jacked in. However, for 25 minutes I was hooked. As a series of vignettes, this was very fun.
I expected this to be more mind-blowing, and maybe I was just being a lazy reader, but I didn’t feel like the book had much to say. It was cool, but shallow. Then again, I’m being too harsh because I’m a reader of the future… the point wasn’t a plot or character but the what-if, so credit there.

The Able McLaughlins by Margaret Wilson

Although the storyline in this novel is relatively simple...and involves a secret which most people have figured out.... the details are significant and unknown to most. The author succeeds in keeping the tension constant during this tale of a Civil War veteran soldier returning to his family homestead in Iowa to heal after having been held a prisoner. He falls in love with the young woman who lives nearby...who has recently lost her mother...and her father has been in Europe. An evil cousin enters the scene briefly...but sets in motion the events of the novel. I'm not sure this would hold up as Pulitzer material these days...but it was quite good...and probably ahead of its time since it was published in 1923. I may read the sequel.

Meet Me in Monaco by Hazel Gaynor

"Meet Me in Monaco" combines the fairy-tale wedding of actress Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier with the fictional love story between a French parfumeur and a British press photographer. James needs a good photograph of film star Grace Kelly while she is attending the 1955 Cannes Film festival. He follows her to Sophie Duval's shop, but Sophie has hidden Grace in her office. The chance meeting of James and Sophie was the start of a relationship. Grace and Sophie formed a friendship which led to Sophie designing a special perfume for Grace's wedding.

The book also touched on themes of controlling versus healthy relationships, careers for women, and family obligations. A highlight of the book was the beautiful location in the French Riviera and Monaco. I also enjoyed reading about the designing of perfumes. My mother and grandmother were admirers of Grace Kelly, and I remember how devastated they felt to hear of Grace's tragic death in 1982. "Meet Me in Monaco" was romantic historical fiction with a bit of Hollywood glamour.

Restless Valley: Revolution, Murder, and Intrigue in the Heart of Central Asia by Philip Shishkin

What a fascinating nonfiction glimpse into a country I was unsure how to pronounce, much less anything about its history! This book covers recent history in Kyrgyzstan with some forays into Uzbekistan. My biggest takeaway is that it is quite a mess. There have been numerous political upheavals, presidents forced to flee, overhauls of corrupt regimes only to have the new regime turn corrupt as well. Much of the drama seems to stem from a combination of a lot of money and therefore players with a vested interest in keeping things a bit unstable, and the way that the former Soviet republics were carved up, dividing ethnic groups among nations (sometimes intentionally, it seems, to weaken power). And of course, the US is involved - we have a military installation there that is important for transit to Afghanistan, so there's even more money and power and influence involved. It's a fascinating story and perhaps would be interesting to visit - but I suspect I wouldn't want to live there.

Paradise of the Blind by Dương Thu Hương

Whatever I was expecting from this I didn't get it. The author was a political dissident, but this was not strongly anti-communist. Some readers have shelved this as feminist, but I didn't read anything that would fit that description. What I read of Hang's mother and aunt also misses the GR description, although I admit there is some of it here.

I didn't find good writing nor good characterization and there was a complete absence of plot. What was there for me to hang my hat on? Well, there was lots of food. Rice, of course, but noodles and fish and beef and chicken, also and most especially descriptions of sweet things filled page after page.

Despite the foregoing, this wasn't absolutely awful. It simply sits toward the bottom of my 3-star group.

Facing Racism: The Guide to Overcoming Unconscious Bias and Hidden Prejudice to Be a Part of the Change by Andrae Smith

Reading Facing Racism feels like sitting down to have a conversation with Andrae Smith. The book is written for those who have begun confronting racism, so it is more about how to approach this work than about convincing the reader that racism exists. A review of how our history as a nation got us here and a differentiation of the definitions of prejudice and racism keep the reader on track and focused:

…prejudice is the part of the problem that deals with personal beliefs, …and racism is the part of the problem that deals with social order – it’s a mechanism that employs racial discrimination to act on and reinforce prejudicial attitudes within society. P36-37 (Kindle)

Andrae is particularly good at including stories and analogies that clarify and illustrate issues like white privilege, centering whiteness, unconscious bias and the shadow self and otherization. He then puts these explanations into action steps that can be taken by anyone ready to do the work. To succeed we need empathy, listening skills and the willingness to have courageous conversations knowing we will be likely to meet resistance. Facing Racism is a clear and concise book that will increase your knowledge and give you the tools to support change. I suggest you pick up a copy as soon as you can!

In case you keep track of such things, your combos appear to be for 20.7 and 20.9. Score is the same.

Read a book in which a character or group of characters eat cake.

p. 138: “They crowd around her and when Marc places the cake down they launch into the ‘Happy Birthday’ song.” After which, the singers and the heroine eat the cake.

The Paradox Hotel (2022) by Rob Hart (Goodreads Author) (Hardcover, 336 pages)
Review:The Paradox Hotel is a twisty time travel science fiction novel set (mostly) around 2072 CE. Our first-person narrator is a hard-boiled, wise-cracking woman who is the Head of Security at the Paradox Hotel. Her medical condition is deteriorating, a result of the effects of too much time travel. (She was a time agent who time traveled to catch modern day (2072 CE) smugglers and those that wanted to change history.) Weird events (like clocks running backwards for a while, then resuming their forward motion) are taken in a matter-of-fact manner. Then – no spoilers – extremely strange events start happening. Our wise-cracking narrator has to figure out why the strange events are happening, and to stop them if she can. I found the novel enjoyable. However, I would recommend it only to fans of science fiction time travel stories, as I don’t think the novel has mainstream appeal.

We have this author as nonwestern as he is still considered as a Jamaican writer. Yes, he also works for 20.7.
