Venue: The Cloister at Sea Island 100 Cloister Drive Sea Island, GA 31561 United States

On Thursday, May 5 at 5 p.m., author and journalist Rick Atkinson will present a lecture on his most recent book, The British Are Coming: The War for America, Lexington to Princeton, 1775-1777, the first volume of a trilogy on the American Revolution.

Atkinson describes the conflict in rich detail, shedding new light on well-known personalities, including George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and General Nathanael Greene, who spent his final year near Savannah on land awarded to him for his military service. The story is also told from the British perspective, benefiting from Atkinson’s extensive use of primary materials such as the Georgian Papers of the Royal Archives at Windsor Castle.

Winner of Pulitzer Prizes in both history and journalism, Atkinson is the bestselling author of the Liberation Trilogy, a narrative history of World War II in Europe. During two decades at The Washington Post, he worked as a reporter, foreign correspondent, and senior editor, and served as the Post’s Berlin bureau chief.

The program will be held at The Cloister on Sea Island and will also be available via livestream. A Zoom link will be sent to all attendees the week of the lecture. Society members attend free of charge. The cost for non-members is $25.
