Darkradience padded quitely across the slippery river bank, ears pricked, as to hear the slightest movement of a mouse, or a vole. There-! She saw something rustling in a pile of dead leaves below an old cypress tree. She quickly dropped into a hunter's crouch, and leapt towards where the sound was comming from. Trapping the mouse beneath one paw, she swiftly snapped its neck with the other. Looking around first, she then burried it a little ways below the sandy ground and undergrowth, and continued searching for more prey.
Dapplenose swiped a paw through the river. The cool water sliped bewetten her claws. She crouched beside the riverbank to get a drink of the cool, refreshing water. After she has her fill, she sighed with satisfaction. She swiped at the water a couple more times becore getting up and leaving.
Fawnpaw shivered in her thistledown fur. She was soaked to the bone with the morning dew and her body gave a sudden shudder as a chill slipped down her spine. Get a hold of yourself, Fawnpaw! You're supposed to be hunting for your Clan. You'll never catch anything if you can't focus on something other than your discomfort. She gingerly lifted a paw and placed it gently before her.She opened her mouth to let the scents of the forest rub against its roof. She licked her dry lips in concentration and slowly began stalking forward.
Dapplenose was padding through the forrests when she scented Fawnpaw. She was surprised at how her pelt blended in so smoothly with the bracken. She crouched down, deciding to watch Fawnpaw hunt. This will be good...
Fawnpaw's breath hitched in her throat as the scent of prey wafted to her nose. It didn't smell of nuts and berries or pine like mice did. Nor the bullrushy wet smell of a shrew. She continued on her journey quietly, minding her breathing and where she set her paws.Immediately her ears shot up and her eyes widened. She leapt sideways as a flash of black struck out at her.she met it evenly with an outstretched paw with deadly thorn-sharp claws. The snake fell limply to the ground and she let out a quiet sigh of relief. She found herself looking at the sky.Has StarClan been sparing me in these trees?
Dapplenose stared shocked at the snake that Fawnpaw had killed. Facnpaw killed a snake?! was the first thought that came to her mind. What was the snake even doing so far from where the adders usualy are?
Fawnpaw shot a hesitant glance at the snake. She wished Dapplenose was here.Surely she could interpret this omen.Fawnpaw took a few deep breaths before thanking StarClan for sparing her life and quickly burying the scaly body beneath the wet earth.she sniffed the air, angered to find that most of the prey-scents were masked by the freshly turned dirt. She turned to go back the way she had come. She preferred hunting by the river anyway.
Harepaw padded into camp, he had two shrews hanging from his mouth. He glanced at the elders den, his eyes filled with anger and sadness. He had never understood exactly what happened to his mother, but was to ashamed to ask anyone. He set the prey down, wishing that someone could've been around to see his catch. Harepaw headed over to apprentice den, wondering if Fawnpaw was there.
Smokekit watched Harepaw come back into camp quietly, a pang of longing shooting through her. She had missed the kittypet life at first, but then she had grown accustomed to clan ways. At this point it was becoming unbearable to watch the apprentices and warriors come and go from the camp, but be unable to herself. She decided to go talk to Harepaw. She felt even more shy than normal around him. "Harepaw," she mewed, padding towards him.
Harepaw heard his name. He pricked his ears, raising his head. He saw Smokekit padding towards him, and deciding that Smokekit must of said his name. He walked over to her, swishing his tail. "Hey Smokekit!" he purred.
Fawnpaw looked at her distorted reflection waiting patiently for a shiny silver fish. When she spotted one her paw flew into the water narrowly missing its mark. She growled to herself and decided to give it up.

((must have said his name.))
((must have said his name.))
Smokekit's pelt grew warm when he said her name. Her whiskers lifted in a soft smile. "Hi, Harepaw," she mewed. "I saw you come in with the two shrews, and I wanted to tell you good job." She got a wistful look in her eyes. "I can't wait until I'm an apprentice. When I am, do you think..." She trailed off shyly. "Do you think you could help me? You're a really good hunter."
Harepaw blushed at her praise. "Thanks, and sure. It'd be fun to help you." he purred, looking down at her. He thought for a second, trying to remember how old she was. "How old are you now?" he asked.
Fawnpaw watched the water for a few more moments until deciding she could no longer delay. She was frightened of what her mentor might say about not catching prey. She was tired of lectures, no cat could be perfect. She especially loathed the saying 'Sorry', catches no prey' any cat in its right mind could figure that out and she was tired of the other apprentices being forced to hear it time and again.
Smokekit purred. "I just turned six moons. I feellike I've been here much longer than just two moons, though. I can't wait to really help the clan." She nodded. "I'd love that," she mewed in a happy, quiet tone. "What are you doing?" She asked him, swishing her tail in the dust.
Fawnpaw padded sadly into camp. Her ears swiveled toward Harepaw and Smokekit's conversation as she made her way to the fresh kill pile. She selected a plump shrew-freshly killed- and went to a small secluded area to eat and rest until her mentor came back on the dawn patrol.
"Nothing really. I was out hunting... but you probably knew that." Harepaw explained. He glanced over at Fawnpaw, then back to Smokekit. "Want to learn the hunting crouch?" he asked.
((omgizzles...maybe in a sec))Fawnpaw lifted her head from her food to watch Harepaw. Her eyes sparkled for a moment when she took in the scene, she hoped she'd have an apprentice as eager as Smokekit was.She felt a pang of doubt knot in her stomach. What if the Clan didn't want her to mentor their kits?
((Sorry, I had to eat dinner...))Smokekit's blue eyes glowed with anticipation. "Sure!" She mewed. "I appreciate that a lot, Harepaw." A warm breeze ruffled her pelt, blowing some loose leaves in their direction. Smokekit watched Harekit intently.
Harepaw got down into the hunters crouch. His muscles rippling beneath his pelt as he moved forward. His paws seemed to barely touch the ground. He made it to the middle of the clearing then got up. "You're turn!" he called.
Smokekit let out a little sigh of amazement. "I'll try," she mewed uncertainly. "That was really good, Harepaw." She dropped down into the crouch the way Harepaw had, and duplicated it with only a few discrepancies. She crawled forward quickly, her tiny paws coming down first heavily, then lightening until they were just tapping the dirt. She came to a halt next to Harepaw. "Was that okay? She asked anxiously.
Fawnpaw thought back to her first crouch. It hadn't been as clean as Smokekit's.Her eyes flickered to Harepaw hoping he would praise this kit to the high heavens.
Harepaw looked down at her, his eyes gleaming. "That was amazing!" he purred, licking her ear. Harepaw really liked teaching others, he couldn't wait to be a mentor.
Smokekit went slightly stiff, beaming with pleasure and slight disbelief. Harepaw had just licked her ear and praised her... It was more than she had hoped for when she had come to talk to him. She longed to have friends here, and she was beginning to make some. "Thanks," she purred. "You're a good teacher." She smiled shyly.
Darkradience sniffed the air again, hoping to catch the scent of more prey, but all but a stong twoleg stench eluded her. Grumbling, she continued looking, farther along the bank for a mouse, avole, or just Something. Sighing, she sat down, at loss, and beginging to grow weary. This evidentaly wasn't a good day for hunting.

It was more than she had hoped for when she had come to talk to him. She..."The sound of voices woke Shadesnow from his nap. HE shivered slightly as a cold breeze whistled through his fur. I can't wait until I'm old enough to be at the center of the den, he thought tiredly. As the youngest and most recent warrior, his nest was right at the edge of the warriors' den. Yawning, Shadesnow stretched and padded into the clearing. Immediately he saw Smokekit with Harepaw. Watching for a while, he began to feel pangs of longing. No cat has ever been that close to me, he thought sadly. It was true; Shadesnow had never had a close friend. Is there something wrong me? Why am I the only cat without a best friend? He turned away from Smokekit and Harepaw, then felt slightly guilty as he heard their excited voices. Of course they should be allowed to have fun. He smiled as he padded away. A new breeze brought Fawnpaw's scent. He looked up and smiled at her.
Fawnpaw's fur prickled with unease. She felt like she was being scurtinized by her mentor during one of the assessments. She raised her eyes slowly, they settled on Shadowsnow and her heart skipped a beat. She looked behind her to see if her was looking at another cat but there was no one behind her.She quickly averted her gaze and stood."I really don't think I should play...my mentor may have a job for me. I know I'll be in trouble for not catching prey this morning but the adder..."
Shadesnow stared at Fawnpaw, confused. What did I do? he wondered. "Oh no, I wasn't coming to tell you to do something useful. You've already been out hunting today, haven't you? You should be allowed to relax a little. Don't leave just because of me." He looked carefully at her tense posture. He swished his tail uneasily as he considered it. He clearly remembered how he had felt as an apprentice, worried about not being good enough, desperate to please, wondering who he was and what he would do. He smiled ironically to himself as he realized how little he had changed. Then something Fawnpaw had said sunk in. "Wait a minute - what adder?" he asked urgently.
Darkradience eventually got up, and retrced her steps to where she had burried her previous catch. Digging it up, she began to make the return trip back to camp, following the river bank again. It was muddy, well, muddier than usual, she noticed- probably because it had been raining the day before, or from the melting leaf-bare ice. It didn't really matter, though, she thought, as long as it would dry soon.
Fawnpaw trembled."It was an omen...from your StarClan.I was hunting amonst the buffalo grass, the sun was barely above the peak....it became deathly silent and I felt...evil near me.I was dragged backward and my paw was sent forward in a battle position. I didn't even do it, but I killed the adder. The only problem in my salvation was the fact that I had been frozen when I first felt it and adders do not reside in those grasses.Something must have made them move their."She felt her cheeks heat up.She had never even talked so much to her mother, or Dapplenose. She hadn't even uttered one word to her mentor."I'm sorry to concern you in such trivial matters.I've been meaning to consult Dapplenose but we had the problem with Sparrowstar and the other apprentices..."
Shadesnow stared at her, whiskers quivering in shock. He felt an ominous chill. He tried to laugh. "What do you mean, concern me with it? I'm glad you told me, Fawnpaw. This is important. Don't feel self-concious about it, omens aren't trivial. Can I help you somehow?" Shadesnow began to pace anxiously, trying to reason it out. His churning paws stirred up dust, and he coughed. "I wonder what it could mean..." he murmurred. "An adder in the buffalo grass. I've only seen them near the river, at the Tumbled Stones...I'll go with you to Dapplenose. StarClan MUST have meant something." He tried to smile at Fawnpaw reassuringly, but inside, his thoughts were in turmoil. StarClan, what does this mean? An adder? And the way she describes it! She must be terrified - she could have died! Shadesnow glanced at Fawnpaw, worried about her.
Fawnpaw immediately lowered her gaze. She had never been able to make eye contact with stronger cats or her peers. She extended her claws and retracted them, slowly tearing a leaf to shreds."I would like that very much.I don't think I could handle this all on my own."She looked up,determined to meet Shadesnow's eyes and not flinch away.
Shadesnow purred reassuringly just as she looked up. "Don't worry, I'll help you. But I think you underestimate yourself. I think if you tried, you could be the bravest cat in all the Clans." He broke off, suddenly unsure of why he had said that. It's not as if I know her that well. She is a very nice cat, but so shy! I wonder why she never talks that much. I'm just a really young warrior. I was an apprentice only a few moons ago. He took a deep breath, determined to stay on task and untangle his confusion later. After all, he stayed up late every night trying to answer questions. "Okay. Should we go find Dapplenose now?"
