Was this a full-length novel or a short story? Can you recall where the man was living (US, UK, Germany, Australia...)? Do you recall when the story was set (1930s, 1950s, 1990s)? Do we ever find out the origin of the voice?

I already provided all I know within the post, and it seems those who did respond are more concerned in following the rules than actually being helpful. The post was originally opened in unsolved, and I later moved it to archived, thinking this is what's required after a certain amount of inactivity. Given the complaints I received, coupled with the difficulty of navigating this forum, I am done with this resource. I gave it a test case, and in my opinion it failed, miserably.
