SOLVED. SciFi portals between worlds and colliding empires, one w/magic and dragons, the other telepathy and science [s]

The worlds all have the same geography, the portals allow for easy transition from world to world. First contact leads to death, negotiations and war. Our heros from the telepathy/science world are losing their telepathy as they are captured and sent off into the empire of magic and dragons. The magic/dragons are losing their powers as they seek to conquer the other empire. I meant to keep the author and title, since I am sure the re will be a seguel

Piers Anthony's Split Infinity series has that theme, but I read it so long ago, that I'm not sure if the details match or not.
