Set in Australia after a conflict between Russia and China escalates in cobalt bombs destroying most of the northern hemisphere. The bombing leaves a deadly cloud of radiation slowly making its way south on the trade winds. One by one cities stop communicating after the radiation hits. Told through a handful of people as they spend their last months knowing the radiation is coming, it is a story of human nature facing an imminent literal end of the world. Some manage through vices, others through work and structure and other by denial but they do manage to keep living until the end. Dwight is an American who survived while on mission in naval submarine traveling until they found life in Australia. He is entertained by Australia and especially Moira but is just waiting to reunite with his family. Peter is is Australian attaché with a wife still nesting and planning a future for their baby daughter. John is the scientist who has led a safe life and decides to take up car racing.
The story is slow and thoughtful as each copes in their own way knowing that they only have months to live. Most can only continue as if life will go on. The way life changes as the time gets closer is done well. I'm quite glad that I finally read this book and found it a great introduction to Shute's writing. My only regret is the over use of the word "honey" by Dwight.
