Kelly Sj | 483 comments Just finished A Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking by T. Kingfisher. It's a middle-grades fantasy about a 14-year-old girl who is a wizard, but her only magic ability involves dough (but you can do some creative things with magical dough). Loved it!

Used it for comfort read, so we're only one book away from finishing Mini Rolls (just need an ATY read).

Wow, you should get extra credit for a book about baking!

I finished La Charrette bleue and put it under A book for the 2022 ATY challenge, so that finished Mini Rolls.

message 54: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1834 comments So I just realized sharp could be considered a flavor word, as in sharp cheddar cheese. What do you all think?

I have 2.5 hours left in Sharp Objects, it fits for ATY challenge prompt but that's it, unless I can use it for flavor too.

I DNF'd the Kindle book I'd started but counted the pages and moved on to Running Wild, which works for several prompts.

message 55: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2879 comments Nancy, I looked up sharp in the dictionary and one of it's meanings is having a strong odor or flavor so I'd say your book would count.

I finished Rogue Protocol and added it to less than 250 pages and added Egg Drop Dead to important meal.

I hope to finish my shell book tomorrow and will start on my Madeleine book tonight.

message 56: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1834 comments I posted in the FAQ thread too for an official answer on sharp.

When the theme came out, I knew I had to read this one!

message 58: by Kellie Lyn (new)

Kellie Lyn | 211 comments I finished Scythe (Arc of a Scythe, #1) by Neal Shusterman and put in the "red on the cover" slot. I am starting Ice Cold (Rizzoli & Isles, #8) by Tess Gerritsen ..I am hoping to have it finished this evening.

message 59: by Kelly Sj (new)

Kelly Sj | 483 comments Hi all - hope you don't mind I switched the "second" color in the spreadsheet to blue instead of a darker pink, my eyes/brain were having trouble with two shades of the same color.

message 60: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2879 comments Blue works good for me, I know I have trouble when the spreadsheet has various shades of gray.

message 61: by Nancy (last edited Feb 23, 2022 11:18AM) (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1834 comments Fine with me! I went with a slightly darker shade of pink but I'm totally cool with another color.

Also Emily gave the go-ahead for sharp, however, I also just realized the cover of the edition I'm listening to has black and white. I hope to finish that up today so will put it in that one so we can get closer to completing a madeleine.

message 62: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2879 comments Nancy, there are a lot of books possible for black and white and not many for flavor.

message 63: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1834 comments True, but I just want to finish the first madeleine!

message 64: by Kelly Sj (new)

Kelly Sj | 483 comments Finished You Should See Me in a Crown for "someone smiling on the cover" - too cutesy for me, at least it was a quick read.

I'm going to start Auntie Poldi and the Lost Madonna, which is set in Italy.

I've been slowly working my way through Empress and have gotten far enough that I can say for sure I'll finish it during the read-a-thon. I also have I Am the Messenger if I have time (which seems likely). Those are both ATY books, and fit in a couple other places on the spreadsheet too.

message 65: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2879 comments Nancy, if you want to get closer to completing the madeleine we can move my Rogue Protocol to the black and white (there were 10 options for that prompt and 5 for the less than 250 pages) so I just put it in the spot with less options. I think, flavor is a harder prompt to fill and black/white and <250 pages are kinda easy ones.

message 66: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1834 comments Nah it's fine, I'm sure someone will finish one soon. I finished Sharp Objects and put it under flavor.

message 67: by Robin P, Orbicular Mod (new)

Robin P | 3964 comments Mod
I finished Vie et Legendes (yes, it's in French) and put it under long book because we'll probably have few of those.

message 68: by Robin P, Orbicular Mod (new)

Robin P | 3964 comments Mod
I finished The Sun Is Also a Star. It was a "movie tie-in edition" so it had some black and white on the cover, which is what I put it under.

message 69: by Emma R. (new)

Emma R. | 79 comments I finished Lioness Rampant and the audiobook cover had a circle, so I put it there

message 70: by Kelly Sj (new)

Kelly Sj | 483 comments Set in Italy is complete. Just need Shell on the cover and Yellow cover and we'll have one of each recipe, and we're also close to finishing the second Focaccia and Mini Rolls - go team!

message 71: by Sophia (new)

Sophia (jonquilles) | 185 comments i still need to finish Seeing Ghosts: A Memoir, does that count for black/white cover?

message 72: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2879 comments I have 165 pages left to finish the shell book. I’m hoping to finish tonight.

message 73: by Robin P, Orbicular Mod (new)

Robin P | 3964 comments Mod
I'm listening to Black Buck by Mateo Askaripour which has a yellow cover but it will take another day or two to finish.

message 74: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2879 comments We have finished the madeleine!

message 75: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2879 comments From the planning sheet, it looks like we have a chance of completing another Focaccia or Mini Roll. We probably should moved Jackie’s book to one of those because I don’t see us completing another Cannoli.

message 76: by Robin P, Orbicular Mod (new)

Robin P | 3964 comments Mod
I finished A Week in Winter and put it under Comfort Read on the MIniRoll

message 77: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2879 comments Sophia wrote: "i still need to finish Seeing Ghosts: A Memoir, does that count for black/white cover?"

I would count it.

I just started a new book 148 pages long and realized it has gun cartridge shells so if anyone finishes a book set in France we can complete a madeleine.

message 78: by Sophia (new)

Sophia (jonquilles) | 185 comments Finished Fuzz: When Nature Breaks the Law, which is a yellow cover! I think that's our first cannoli done? not sure how to migrate things from the planning tab to the completed one, I've been occasionally trying to update the spreadsheet from my phone which is just a nightmare

message 79: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2879 comments Sophia, updating the spreadsheet from your phone definitely adds an extra challenge. I moved mine last night from my phone but I have already forgotten what I did. I finished Urchin Dishes and Deadly Wishes (Sandy Bay #21) by Amber Crewes Urchin Dishes and Deadly Wishes by Amber Crewes and added it to the next shell spot. I’m going to try and get in audiobook time tomorrow but I’m not sure how much time I’ll have.

In a different group I’m doing an A-Z challenge where you have to find a food in that starts with every letter in the alphabet, this book of course had urchins, I needed a book that starts with a U for another challenge and lucked out that it fit this challenge too.

message 80: by Emma R. (new)

Emma R. | 79 comments @Sophia, I moved your book over.

I started and finished a book by Heather Graham today. That finishes our seconded Focaccia. I'm on track to finish Sweet & Bitter Magic within the next few hours. I'm currently not sure where to put it

message 81: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2879 comments Emma, wherever you want. It is the only possible posted book for flavor, but I’m the only one with a posted 500+ page book and I’m not sure if I’ll finish it before Sunday night.

message 82: by Kellie Lyn (new)

Kellie Lyn | 211 comments I am going to finish Under the Tuscan Sun tonight (book set in Italy) and should be able to finish The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (book with a yellow cover) tomorrow. I also have two cozy mysteries left to read and hopefully finish before Sunday night.

I am 100 pages into one of my books and realized it doesn't really fit any of the categories, or none that we need. I am thinking of switching to this one - A Homespun Regency Christmas - but I can't tell if either of the people are smiling. My actual copy has a library sticker right over their faces and the image on GR is rather small, even when blown up. What do you think?

message 84: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2879 comments Robin, I enlarged it on my phone and while still pretty blurry I'd count it as a smile.

If I have time today, I will listen to The Mad Ship by Robin Hobb but I have 16 hours left listening to it at 1.3. I'll see how much I listen to and try speeding it up a bit more and based on what I can listen to today I'll decide what do listen/read tomorrow.

message 85: by Robin P, Orbicular Mod (new)

Robin P | 3964 comments Mod
i put The Wedding Journey under "has some black and white" - not a lot of black but at least a little. The funny thing is that the book is all about people retreating in war in rain and mud, but the picture shows the heroine in a perfectly clean white dress.

message 86: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1834 comments I will finish Running Wild today, I would have finished it last night but my Kindle battery died. Dangit! I guess I could have read on my phone but I really don't like doing that. It sounds like we could finish another cannoli based on recent comments so I'll put it under next in a series.

I also should finish The School of Essential Ingredients today, I have quite a few things to do around the house so will get lots of audio time in. I'll also put it under a Cannoli prompt, where food plays an important role. I mean, it's about a cooking school after all!

Not sure what I'll start next, I could probably get through a short book today/tomorrow so I'll check in later to see prompts need to be done.

message 87: by Kelly Sj (new)

Kelly Sj | 483 comments Just finished I Am the Messenger which doesn't really have a home in a recipe. It doesn't look like anyone is reading a book set in France - Mata Hari's Last Dance has been sitting on my shelf unread for a few years, and it's short enough I should be able to get through it by tomorrow!

message 88: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1834 comments Finished The School of Essential Ingredients and put it in for food plays an important role.

message 89: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1834 comments Also finished Running Wild and put it in next in a series.

I'm starting The Girl With the Louding Voice next, and I'm going to do both Kindle and audio, so there's a decent chance I'll finish by end of day tomorrow. The only prompt it works for that we still need to finish another Cannoli is new-to-you author.

message 90: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2879 comments I’ll finish A Swiftly Tilting Planet by Madeleine L'Engle tonight. It will be my final book for the read-a-thon. I’m feeling burnt out.

message 91: by Kellie Lyn (new)

Kellie Lyn | 211 comments I finsihed The Winter Ghosts for a book set in France and American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang for a yellow cover. I have two ARCs to finish this weekend but not sure they will fit anything that we need so I will use them for sprinkle pages. I do have a Maddie Day cozy mystery I after the other two but I will have to see.

message 92: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2879 comments Robin, I also consider Maeve Binchy’s books a comfort read.

I finished my book.

message 93: by Sophia (new)

Sophia (jonquilles) | 185 comments Almost done with French Lessons Adventures with Knife, Fork, and Corkscrew by Peter Mayle which could go under shell, yellow cover or set in France. Still chipping away at Seeing Ghosts but it turns out it's hard to speed through a memoir about grief, who knew? (Me, I should have known.) Do we have anything else that we're actively working towards? I can try to burn through American Panda by Gloria Chao tomorrow since it has a smile on the cover.

message 94: by Jackie, Solstitial Mod (new)

Jackie | 2450 comments Mod
Finished The Great Pretender: The Undercover Mission That Changed Our Understanding of Madness on audiobook. May or may not finish another book for the readathon, depending on how tomorrow goes.

message 95: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1834 comments Yay, go us! 2 of each is great, these prompts weren't all easy. It's very satisfying seeing the entire Plan tab in blue.

Based on the Plan tab we could possibly finish one more Madeleine? The others have 0 options for one or more prompts. I don't know that I'll finish The Girl with the Louding Voice, the narrator's voice is one that does not lend itself to fast reading. Unless I can get in a lot of audio time while doing chores/running errands.

I always like to peek at other teams and see how my team compares. Only one other team completed two of every treat, and that team actually completed three of two of the treats! We're also about average for Sprinkles, with some below us and some above.

message 96: by Kelly Sj (new)

Kelly Sj | 483 comments Two of each is pretty sweet! I will not be finishing any more books, so anything else I read today is just page count toward sprinkles :) I'm back to my regular ATY list now.

message 97: by Robin P, Orbicular Mod (new)

Robin P | 3964 comments Mod
I won't finish anything else either. I did finish 7 books, which is great considering I spent 2 days traveling!

message 98: by Sophia (new)

Sophia (jonquilles) | 185 comments Finished French Lessons: Adventures with Knife, Fork, and Corkscrew and added it to the 3rd madeleine and I'm about to finish American Panda for someone smiling on the cover, and I think that's probably it for me.

message 99: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2879 comments I just today’s reading towards sprinkles. We did great with this rather challenging read-a-thon.

message 100: by Amy (Other Amy) (new)

Amy (Other Amy) | 690 comments I finished Over Sea, Under Stone, which unfortunately cannot finish the madeline. Still, a fantastic showing all!
