It's time for our next Read-a-Thon, and we are taking it to the tent for the Great ATY Bake Off!

Around the Year

It's time to fill your bakery case with goodies. You will read books to bake sweets and pastries! Each pastry takes a different number of books, depending on complexity.

You can bake your pastries in any order that you'd like, and you can bake multiple pastries at once (infinite oven space!). Don't forget about your sprinkles! You get some for every 1000 pages read (or 10 hours of audio listed to).

You'll want to create the best bakery case that you can bake, so make sure you have at least one of every type of goodie... they are all important to your score! You can have multiples of the same types of pastries as well.

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1832 comments Woohoo! Love this theme! I'm going to go ahead and add the books I have planned.

message 4: by Kelly Sj (new)

Kelly Sj | 483 comments Hello team! This is just the distraction I need this weekend - a water main burst at the college where I work, we've been closed for three days, and I have to reschedule plans for all my classes - it's like living Spring 2020 all over again! ;) No worries, this time it's temporary!

I'm currently in the middle of three books with over 100 pages left in each, and what I choose to read after those can be flexible based on team needs.

Jillian | 2873 comments Hi team!

This looks like a fun challenge.

message 6: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2873 comments I have been saving these Murderbot books for the read-a-thon

Artificial Condition (The Murderbot Diaries, #2) by Martha Wells Artificial Condition by Martha Wells & Rogue Protocol (The Murderbot Diaries, #3) by Martha Wells Rogue Protocol by Martha Wells

One of my goals is to complete series that I have already started. I own this audiobook and have never gotten around to listening to it so this week seems like a good time to listen to it since reading a book by an author with the name Madeleine seems quite challenging.
A Swiftly Tilting Planet (Time Quintet, #3) by Madeleine L'Engle A Swiftly Tilting Planet by Madeleine L'Engle

I have a cozy food mystery I might start and then two possible library books. I need to read one of them for a different group challenge.

message 7: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1832 comments I looked through my TBR and have Matchmaking for Beginners by Maddie Dawson, yay! I need to see if I can find some books that match the cover prompts too.

I held off on finishing the two books I currently have going, so I am not starting something new on Saturday - I got bit by that last time! I have options for some of the prompts that I will read later in the week.

I'm reading ATY in order, and have to get through prompt 7 and one of 8/9/10 to be caught up. The rest will be Pop Sugar, NetGalley ARCs, or free reading.

message 8: by Amy (Other Amy) (last edited Feb 18, 2022 04:09PM) (new)

Amy (Other Amy) | 690 comments Hello, everyone! These are fun prompts. I have quite a few possibilities. I probably won't make it to the library to add them to the spreadsheet until tomorrow though as they close before I get off work.

Lemon works for flavor word and I was planning to read it soon, so I will probably start there. (It works for a few other prompts too.)

message 9: by Jillian (last edited Feb 18, 2022 06:37PM) (new)

Jillian | 2873 comments I was looking at audible plus books and found this one which should work in several places
Pancakes in Paris Living the American Dream in France by Craig Carlson Pancakes in Paris: Living the American Dream in France by Craig Carlson

message 10: by Kellie Lyn (new)

Kellie Lyn | 210 comments Hello team, This is has turned into the perfect reading weekend for me. No husband, no kids, no grands, no work...all reading. I have been looking through the books I am hoping to finish this week and having some trouble matching the prompts. (Not sure if this is because the books I read are lame or if I am just not seeing it yet.) I am hoping as I get reading them, they will start popping with the prompts. The one I am starting tomorrow is Home Before Dark by Riley Sager and then Scythe (Arc of a Scythe, #1) by Neal Shusterman . Excited about the week.

message 11: by Sophia (new)

Sophia (jonquilles) | 184 comments Excited to start my first read a thon! Dumb question, do we have to match all the prompts to “finish” or is it just something for extra points? Definitely starting with Madeleine L’Engle’s Swiftly Tilting Planet, which is also on my ATY list already.

Jillian | 2873 comments Sophia wrote: "Excited to start my first read a thon! Dumb question, do we have to match all the prompts to “finish” or is it just something for extra points? Definitely starting with Madeleine L’Engle’s Swiftly ..."

Hmm…last time each category was worth different points. I’m not seeing a value for the different foods, but I’m also looking on my phone so I might not be seeing it. We don’t have to complete all the prompts but so far all the teams I have been on we have.

Hi everyone, I am with family for a few days, so might get a slow start. I have put aside several short books for this week . I will check to see what prompts they fit.

message 14: by Jillian (last edited Feb 19, 2022 08:13AM) (new)

Jillian | 2873 comments Would anyone be able to create a completed tab where we can move our books over from the planning tab once we have finished them? Do we want to use a color on the planning tab to show that a prompt has also been completed? I think some of you were on my team for the dragon slaying challenge so similar to that.

message 15: by Kelly Sj (new)

Kelly Sj | 483 comments I created a "completed" tab on the spreadsheet. Columns can be cut and pasted from "plans" to "completed" when a book is finished (in addition to adding the book for a recipe on the other tabs).

I like the idea of color-coding, but we can make more than one of a recipe if we read enough books...this is only my second team challenge so I'll defer to others with more experience on the best way to do this!

message 16: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2873 comments Thanks, Kelly!

We can complete more than one recipe. Before, the captain picked the color scheme and the group followed for example yellow if we were working on the first recipe, pink the second recipe, purple the theirs etc.

message 17: by Kellie Lyn (new)

Kellie Lyn | 210 comments Happy Saturday! I have finished The Graveyard Book and it really only fits on the "grumpy old man character" category in the Canolli section. Once I put it there I am to list it on the finished page...correct? Sorry, I am lousy at spreadsheets. I am starting The Nature of the Beast and hope to finish it today. Again, not sure where it will fit but I am sure something will pop.

message 18: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2873 comments I just checked Lemon Meringue Pie Murder (Hannah Swensen, #4) by Joanne Fluke Lemon Meringue Pie Murderby Joanne Fluke out from the library. It has a pie "shell" on the cover.

That is correct. I went ahead and highlighted the row in the planning sheet so we know that task has been completed once for Canolli.

message 20: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2873 comments I added your name to the Canolli sheet so we know who finished which book.

message 21: by Emma R. (new)

Emma R. | 78 comments Hi all, I'm excited about this week. I have a pile of books to read, so we'll see how that goes. This is my first read-a-thon where I am working a full-time job, so I'm not sure how much I will be able to check in on the thread but I will keep my reads updated on the spreadsheet

message 22: by Amy (Other Amy) (new)

Amy (Other Amy) | 690 comments I finished Lemon and I put it on a book where food plays an important roll. I forgot my mouse, and I find my laptop impossible without it, so I didn't highlight the spreadsheet. I will fix it when I can, or if someone else gets to it first that's fine too.

message 23: by Robin P, Orbicular Mod (new)

Robin P | 3960 comments Mod
I finished Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982. It could go under Less than 200 pages or Author I haven’t read before.

Go team knife! Working on an audiobook at present, but I'm not sure if I will actually finish it this week.

message 25: by Nancy (last edited Feb 19, 2022 05:44PM) (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1832 comments I had a super busy day but then managed to get a couple of hours of audio in and finished The Final Revival of Opal and Nev, which I put under "circle on the cover" as the O in Opal is most definitely a circle. I plan to spend pretty much the whole day reading tomorrow.

Robin, I tend to go with the prompt that has less other options, or one that is part of a recipe that's close to being completed.

message 26: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2873 comments I finished Artificial Condition by Martha Wells. Do you think artificial counts as a flavor word since so many thing have artificial flavors? If not, it works for next in a series or less than 200 pages.

I’ll update my audio and page count tomorrow. I worked on reorganizing our computer room and a closet today so I got in quite a bit of audio time.

message 27: by Robin P, Orbicular Mod (new)

Robin P | 3960 comments Mod
I like artificial as a flavor word!

message 28: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1832 comments Me, too. If an egg works for shell, then why not artificial as a flavor?

message 29: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2873 comments I added it to flavor. I'm not sure how today is going to go. Last night, our dishwasher stopped working and has an error code so we have to try and fix it. Then we were planning on going to Costco which is 90 minutes drive away so not sure if that is still in the plans or not.

I hope you don't end up having to get a new dishwasher!

message 31: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2873 comments Jackie, I've got my fingers crossed that we don't have to get a new one either. At least, if we do there should be some President's Day sales but I'd much rather spend money on other things like books.

My husband got the error code to turn off so we are going to go to Costco's and then try running it when we get home. Hopefully, I will get in some audio book time.

Kellie Lyn | 210 comments Jillian wrote: "I added your name to the Canolli sheet so we know who finished which book."
Thank you, I was not sure how we were logging the finished books.

message 33: by Kellie Lyn (new)

Kellie Lyn | 210 comments Finished The Nature of the Beast and put it in Mini Rolls: Wilderness section. It could also go for "Somewhere I would like to visit" or "Next in a series", those seemed more common though. I am moving on to Home Before Dark audio while doing laundry (oh joy!). I have to finish today since the library wants it back this evening.

message 34: by Kelly Sj (new)

Kelly Sj | 483 comments Just finished In the Shadow of Man - fascinating! I put it in for "somewhere I would like to visit"

Robin, I put Kim Jiyoung in for less than 200 pages on the spreadsheet, since there are a lot of options for author. We can always move things around later if needed!

Does anyone have anything for Italy? I'm pretty sure I have one on my shelf if no one else has something in mind.

Thanks! I am away from home till tomorrow night, will be more active on here after that.

message 36: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2873 comments I don’t have anything for Italy.

message 37: by Nancy (last edited Feb 20, 2022 05:44PM) (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1832 comments I don't have anything for Italy either, but I can find something. Too bad Germany isn't one because the book I'm reading now is set there (and who doesn't love German pastries?)

Here's a Listopia of books set in Italy. I've read a few of these already, but could read The Light in the Ruins by Chris Bohjalian.

If anyone else is doing Pop Sugar, for a book set on a plane, train, or cruise ship, Shipped by Angie Hockman has a shell on the cover.

message 38: by Kellie Lyn (new)

Kellie Lyn | 210 comments Finished Home Before Dark but having trouble putting it in a category. I am using it for an ATY prompt but was wondering if since bainberry pie was used as a weapon and was a significant part of the story...could this be used for "a book featuring an important meal"? It is a stretch but thought I would ask. I am moving on to Murder at the Taffy Shop by Maddie Day.

message 39: by Sophia (new)

Sophia (jonquilles) | 184 comments Sorry I'm having such a slow start, we're dealing with some health problems with my dog and it is eating up a lot of my time/energy. I will try to improve my numbers as the week progresses!

I can start an Adriana Trigiani since she's been on my TBR list for a while but does the entire book need to be set in Italy to count? It sounds like her books are set partially in the US, or characters immigrate to the US from Italy.

message 40: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2873 comments Sophia, I hope your dog starts feeling better. No worries if you cannot get much reading in.

I don’t think it has to be completely set there. The book I’m reading for being set in France is probably around 80% there.

message 41: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2873 comments Kellie Lyn wrote: "Finished Home Before Dark but having trouble putting it in a category. I am using it for an ATY prompt but was wondering if since bainberry pie was used as a weapon and was a signif..."

It sounds like it would work for either spot to me. The book I’m reading for an important meal had a death at the birthday dinner and the book is centered around solving the murder.

message 42: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2873 comments I’m hoping to finish Pancakes in Paris: Living the American Dream in France by Craig Carlson tomorrow for set in France and possibly Egg Drop Dead by Vivien Chien if I’m not to tired after work. Then I’ll start working on the shell on the cover Clammed Up (Maine Clambake Mystery, #1) by Barbara Ross by Barbara Ross and Rogue Protocol by Martha Wells though I doubt I’ll finish them until later in the week.

message 43: by Kelly Sj (new)

Kelly Sj | 483 comments I finished Star of the North and used it for "red on the cover"

I found a book on my TBR with "someone smiling on the cover" (for the team challenge) AND "written by a black author" (for the individual challenge) - You Should See Me in a Crown - and started reading it last night. It's YA so should be a quick read.

message 44: by Kellie Lyn (new)

Kellie Lyn | 210 comments Jillian wrote: "Kellie Lyn wrote: "Finished Home Before Dark but having trouble putting it in a category. I am using it for an ATY prompt but was wondering if since bainberry pie was used as a weap..."

Thanks. I wanted to be sure before adding to the spreadsheet. I will add it which ever one is needed.

message 45: by Emma R. (last edited Feb 21, 2022 10:40AM) (new)

Emma R. | 78 comments I finished Games of Command last night and added it for 500+ pages. It can work for other tasks but that one seemed like the best fit

message 46: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2873 comments We finished our first Focaccia! On the planning tab, we can pick a new color to highlight the tasks for that goodie.

message 47: by Kellie Lyn (new)

Kellie Lyn | 210 comments Finished Lean Mean Thirteen and put it in "Next in a Series". Starting on Scythe

Seems like we are zipping along and can have multiples of our pastries!

message 49: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2873 comments I finished Egg Drop Dead by Vivien Chien. It fits several spots, a few harder ones but I’m not sure if we will be able to complete more than one of those goodies. So, for now I’m going to wait on adding it to a spot and leave it in the planning tab.

message 50: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1832 comments I finished You, Me, and the Colors of Life and put it in for new-to-you author.

Yay for finishing our first focaccia!
