LindaJ^ (lindajs) | 2548 comments I nominate The Orphanage by Serhiy Zhadan translated from Ukranian by Isaac Stackhouse Wheeler. First published in 2017, English translation Feb 23, 2021. Seems relevant to today's headlines.

Sounds amazing. A gut punch, for sure, but amazing. Thanks, Linda.

Nominations close tomorrow - a few more options might be good. I am not planning to nominate this time because my moderator pick will still be active for part of this period.

Nidhi wrote: "I nominate The History of Love by Nicole Krauss."

Sorry, the group has read this one before, though it was back in 2013

Nidhi Kumari | 58 comments Ok, then ... I nominate Mr. Beethoven by Paul Griffiths.

Nadine in California (nadinekc) | 545 comments I nominate Moon Witch, Spider King by Marlon James.

Nadine, the James book book is too new to fall within the requirements listed above. Any other picks?

I’ll nominate A Musical Offering.

LindaJ^ (lindajs) | 2548 comments While I haven't changed my vote from the book I nominated, I am quite tempted to vote for Mr Beethoven. I read it in 2020 - last book finished that year and in my top 5 for the year. I then became a sponsor for Paul Griffins' The Tomb Guardians, choosing the package that included a signed copy of a limited edition, hardcover, hand bound, edition of Mr. Beethoven. It arrived yesterday -- #29 of 40. It includes photos related to the text, e.g., the ship manifest of the vessel Beethoven might have sailed on to reach the US. It is quite gorgeous, and I am tempted to reread right now.

The Orphanage has won the poll - Linda, are you happy to lead the discussion?

message 14: by LindaJ^ (new)

LindaJ^ (lindajs) | 2548 comments I can do that.

Jenna | 157 comments Just a heads up that I ordered from my local bookstore just now - they don't expect it to ship until the end of March and mentioned supply might be limited.

LindaJ^ (lindajs) | 2548 comments It is available for Kindle at $9.99 and there are 14 copies available on Abebooks for $14.45 with free shipping. The NY Times included it in a list of 6 books that would provide context for the current war in Ukraine.
